Highlights of the Men's Track Sprint 1/16 Final Repechages during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

    Breakdown for those who don't understand: Basically for the first lap they just try to ride slowly and scare the opponent, then after the first lap, one of them can sprint whenever they like, the reason they don't sprint straight away is to conserve energy. Occasionally they will try to trick the opponent by doing sudden movements or flinching to make them think that they are attacking. After one of them attacks, the other rider must chase them and its a sprint to the finish line. Hope that helped.

    They are riding slow because they don't want to be the leader. This is the Olympic's , so any small advantage is considered the difference between gold and silver. The leader is in the bad position. Even though this is a sprint the leader is actually taking most of the wind impact from being first. By being seconds behind the leader the leader can take most of the wind and the second rider will have a lot easier time riding. Close near the end the guy in the second position will attempt to out pedal the leader after he already took all force from going high speeds. In theory the second rider will have more energy to out pedal the leader.

    It's extremely easy, they do two or three laps (it depends on the track's lenght) and the first across the finish line win. What they do at the beginning it's just tactic or as they call "surplace", it's not a rule you have to surprise the opponent.

  • @joshk9328

    @joshk9328

    Essentially the desired starting position is the rear, the strange behavior you see during the beginning is the leader trying to get the follower to become the leader. The rules indicate that you may not roll the bike backwards, therefore the front rider will sometimes stop their bike and do a "track stand" attempting to get the person in the back to slip up and end up, up front. Hope this helps, I am terrible at explaining things haha.

    DSlite11 or in more simple terms, for example, let's say the race length is 500 meters, the first few hundred meters are used for tactical positioning, whereas the last couple hundred are where the Sprint kicks in. I think that's a somewhat accurate explanation.

  • @tkindred335

    When you ride behind something, a cyclist, car, or whatever, it is easier to accelerate and pick up speed because you loose so much in wind resistance when biking. The person in front can almost pull you. You can reserve energy until at the very end when you explode with all you've got and sling shot past the lead rider. That is my take on it. Could be wrong.

  • @sniclops15
    @sniclops153 жыл бұрын

    The situation at the beginning is that the two are actually fighting over who starts second. With such a small burst, aerodynamics is necessary to win, so usually the winner is the person who started behind and drafted off the leader. They're going slow to try and bait each other into accidentally sliding into the lead position

    The reason they go slow is because being the leader isn't always good, if you are in front than that means you will take a lot of wind resistance so the person in second wants to get behind them and draft and slingshot by out pedaling the person in front.

    For people still wondering what's going on: From what I understand, the rear cyclist wants to follow close behind to take advantage of the slipstream that the leading cyclist creates. Then he gauges when the best time is to sprint for the finish. The leading cyclist wants to go slow enough to minimize the rear cyclists aerodynamic advantage until he feels that he can lose him by sprinting. You see them watching each other trying to predict what their opponent will do next. There's a lot of strategy and decision making processes that I don't understand, but I think that's the basic gist.

    Time doesn't play a factor in this game. It doesn't matter if the riders take 10sec or 10min to finish the race. Objective is be ahead of the opponent at the finish line. So the first few meters, they just amble along, trying to be behind the other person and at the last moment, sprint to the finish. Guy behind has the advantage as he can draft along without using engery, no wind resistance you see... but the Leader is watching behind his shoulders and tactically sprints or blocks the guy behind n reaches the finish line.

    If you're American and you don't understand why they go slow just think of nascar when they draft the cars Infront then slingshot round. It's the exact same principle.
