Men in Black: Why Do Priests Wear the Roman Collar?

Father Scott Bailey explains the history of the Roman Collar and the reasons why Catholic priests wear it. Clerical garb has been used for centuries, and the Roman Collar in particular has an interesting historical development. Why is it black? Why is there a small white part at the top? Fr. Scott answers these questions and he offers some suggestions for all of us to give better public witness to our faith.

    Christians are to be "in the world, but not of the world" and I think churches have long debated about how this plays out. Blend in? Don't blend in? One thing I appreciate is that there is a drive to help us see the person under the collar, and I think that's quite important.

    Well done sir and as a permanent deacon, I would wear my collar in my ministry and I too encountered people who were very angry about what had happened in the Church as well as having a woman who asked to hold my hand during a rocky air flight. In an emergency situation, the power of the collar allowed me to get access to people who were dying and needed someone to be with their loved ones at the moment of their death. Even in the movies, they are not calling for a rabbi, a Protestant minister, or a Buddudist monk when they are dying, they are screaming for a Catholic priest!

    As an aspirant in formation, I've thought about this. I do want, if ordained, to have some outward sign inviting these kinds of encounters, but I wouldn't want someone to feel awkward for mistaking me as a priest. I like the shirts with the deacon cross, but it's not readily recognized by the public.

    I heard a Lutheran minister say that the origin of the clerical collar was actually in 19th century England among Anglican priests. Presbyterians, Roman Catholics, and Lutheran then followed the practice.

    While doing research for this video, Father Scott heard the same thing from Lutherans. There is a lot of ambiguity in the history of how the Roman Collar came about, but we know that a white linen cloth was being worn at the collar of priest's cassocks by the 17th century. Good article here, which points out that a Protestant minister in the 19th century invented the modern version of the removable collar that many clergy wear today - aleteia.org/2017/08/30/why-do-priests-wear-a-white-collar/

    No, the Roman collar does not make the priest ........ but to the laity, it represents something very special ...... it is a symbol and a reminder of being "Christ-like" and what the priest and everyone should aspire to and work towards in their life. So it is a symbol ..... a very special symbol.

Do Catholic priests have to wear the collar all the time? He explains that there is not a strict requirement to wear it on days off, but the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops would prefer priests to wear it “pretty much all the time.” Father Dave says, “Yes, it's a uniform, but it's also my vocation. *NOW I KNOW……

    This is a weird question, but do priests have to buy their own garb and vestments , or is it provided?

  • @RisenChristDenver

    @RisenChristDenver

    9 ай бұрын

    That's a very good question! Priests who belong to religious orders (like Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans, etc) take a vow of poverty which means they do not have money of their own. This means that the religious order would provide for them all of their needs, including their habit, clerical clothing, and mass vestments. Priests who belong to a diocese do not take a vow of poverty which simply means that they are allowed to own their own things and have money. So priests who belong to a diocese would normally pay for their own clerical clothing and at least some of their vestments (such as an alb and purple stole). Most priests probably do not need to own vestments for Mass because churches almost always have those on hand for their use.

    Some have that gift and others don't. I suggest reading 1 Corinthians 12-14 for a further explanation of the gift and how it works. It's a gift which is useful but not required for salvation. In fact the Bible says that tongues are nowhere near as important as the virtue of charity (1 Corinthians 13:13)

    Thank you so much for this Father Scott. It was very helpful. But I do have a question tho, 2 actually. How come some Catholic priests refer to themself as “pastors” instead of priests even though the church clearly states that it is a Roman Catholic Church? Also they dont wear the Roman white collar, instead they wear a brown alb with a cincture tied around their waist when theyre not leading masses?

  • @RisenChristDenver

    @RisenChristDenver

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great questions! "Pastor" is the title of the priest who is in charge of a parish and "parochial vicar" is the title given to the priest who assists the Pastor. So some priests are Pastors, if they have primary responsibility for the parish. Those who wear other things (like robes with rope cinctures) belong to religious orders. Brown robes usually mean that the priests belongs to the Carmelite or Franciscan religious orders.

    @@user-gl9jd3ih8h He's a Saint! Do you run to Mass every living day of your life? The Mass is truly a "Sacred Treasure," and, alas, our cold, dead faith allows it to remain so. If we valued it as we ought, we would hurry every morning to the church, careless of the snows of winter and the heats of summer, in order to get a share of the riches of this treasure.The Saints knew the value of one Mass: that was a dark day in their calendar on which they were deprived of the happy privilige of saying or hearing Mass. Starting with the basics The Saviors name is Yahshua meaning Yahweh is salvation They know this, but insist on lying and teaching the lie, that JESUS is his name That's a lie Yahshua said that he came to fulfill Roman Catholic doctrine is he came to institute. Institute means start Fulfill means finish He ended suppers they say he started them He ended the physical Priesthood that he started at the time of Moses That's Right he's the author and finisher This clown says he's a priest With his Roman Collar LIE What I absolutely hate is the idea that Yahshua had a successor When you raise from the dead you don't need someone to succeed you.
