And J disarmed the alien of a ray gun that evaporated when it was damaged on the sidewalk. Jay saw that and still kept up the pursuit knowing the alien was potentially armed with more weapons.

You already see a sneak peek at Jay's compassion when he tried to talk the alien down. Guy just blinked vertically but Jay still warns him about the ledge.

That's something I appreciated about his character too. It's also shown when he immediately draws his gun on K when he shoots Jeebs. He's a badass, but he's not a cold blooded killer.

@@enekaitzteixeira7010 Well, maybe not "compassion" at that point, but he didn't let his own disgust and horror at something so alien paralyze him. He kept trying to keep the alien from falling. That ability to cope with insane things would help him have compassion for aliens later on.
What most funny about this scene is that the Guggenheim is not only completely empty at night (no security at all), but also that they apparently keep all their lights on.

a lot of big buildings tend to cycle their lights or keep most of them on because if they turn them all off and power them all one at once in the morning it'll cause a power surge/overload

This doesn't address where the security is either: Him shooting the glass like that should have caused a massive amount of alarms off given how valuable the art pieces at the Guggenheim are: It is probably the primest target for heists in New York.

I know the thing people point out about this scen is how he keept up with the alien, but what strikes me the most is how amazing of a cop J is. The alien pulls a weapon on him, climbs walls and has weird eyes and shit. Still, even though he is weirded out as hell J doesn't shoot. In fact, when the Alien walks towards the ledge, he tries to talk it out of it and save its life. That right there is a protector and what a cop is supposed to be

@@skullyskaric7779 oh I do run in fact I'm a Non-Stop gym rat I jog every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and I go to the gym and lift weights or at home on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturday
I always loved that part when he sees the guy crawling up the wall, that's when Jay realised something else was going on and we as an audience knew this is no human being.

Honestly I hope the same could be said for the couple who was just walking down the sidewalk and had a suicide jumper land right in front of them. I have always hoped K and the other MiB tracked them down and erased that memory as a mercy as much as keeping it a secret.

The worst part about not remembering this is that he would wake up the next morning wondering why his legs felt like he had run a marathon the previous day.
How do you not call off pursuit and call for backup when the guy you're chasing jumps 10 metres into the air and starts spidermaning up a blank wall?

Especially as a black man. I've watched all three MIB and the entire (awesome) animated series and J was always so blissfully unaware of racial limitations. He was born to be an MIB and K's partner. Everything about his personality and the way he perceives the world made him perfect for the job.

Will pointing the gun at the honking car was funny, but imagine how ruined that couple's day was when dude went *SPLAT* right in front of them. At least until they got flashy thinged.

He shot the 8 year old human, but in a deleated scene K says the 8 year old was in fact the only threat, and J didn't judge the other aliens simply because they looked ugly while the other recruits shot them mercilessly because of what they looked like. The human child was actually a dangerous alien in disguise and J knew this because she was holding advanced physics books at 2AM in a bad neghborhood and "had to be up to no good."

It's the Park Avenue Viaduct, outside the Grand Central Terminal. Same place that the Avengers had their first fight as a team. It appears a lot in movies set in New York. The other building where J corners that guy on the roof is the Guggenheim Museum. Amusingly, the Park Avenue Viaduct and the Guggenheim Museum are 2.5 miles apart from each other, across the city. That alien ran a hell of a long way before J caught up with him.

dang that stamina is unreal. like literally unreal because no one has that kind of stamina to run several city blocks and up the entire building like this and still not be at least breathing hard from running at full force the entire time, yes if he was do a slow jog but not full on running.

Could be pure adrenaline and curiosity. I mean he just seen a guy scale a building. I remember as a kid I got chased by a dog and ran full force for several blocks. I can’t remember if I was out of breath. Also that may not be his full speed. I can casually run at 6mph and be fine over a mile if I pace myself. The stairs tho.. yeah have no argument on that

Some people get to the runners high quite easily. I had a boss who could get there in a quarter mile, where I couldn't do it in less than 3 miles. I tried keeping up with him on a 10K, it was unreal. 10 mph average speed for almost all of it.

Nah adrenaline is different. I used to live up a massive hill in a city and would get winded just walking it, once I had to get back home for an emergency and sprinted across the entire city and up that hill without even feeling fatigue.
That last stunt/effect of the alien stepping back off the edge is pretty amazing

It's an interesting plot hole. If the scene was actually shot at the real site, not a set, I guess that the owners stored away all the art to prevent any accidental damage. Still, the producers could have replaced the missing paintings with cheap posters; but, they may have assumed that the viewers may not have noticed.
This scene used to scare the hell out of me, the huge jump, the inhuman screeching, crawling on the wall, and the sideways blinking make this feel more like a horror movie than any other scifi i had ever seen in my life
as a kid i never realised that Jay was a Cop. i always thought he sells some fast food....

J ran down a cephalopod, without knowing it. Interesting that the screenwriters chose to call that alien type a "cephalopod". In the real world cephalopods are a class of mollusks; not really known for moving very quickly.

Very curious. Lots of allegories throughout media that suggest a race of inter dimensional being exist that can manipulate our minds. I personally only have anecdotal evidence, my own experiences & what I’ve gathered just observing. These movies give you hints if you’re paying attention as crazy as it sounds There’s no reason this very obsucure subplot should line up with any sort of theories. I just wish there was some actual literature on the subject, haven’t been able to find any
