The original screenplay was tentatively titled Clear Intent and was written in the mid-1980s. Estevez came up with the idea while he was filming the 1985 movie St. Elmo's Fire. Said Estevez, "I was living in a studio apartment in Santa Monica at the time, and I was up late one night sitting at the kitchen table working out some story ideas on my computer. All of a sudden, this trash truck came roaring down the alley under my window. It was 5 a.m. and it just struck me -- no one had ever done a movie about trashmen before."
It was slated to star another Brat Packer alongside Estevez, such as Judd Nelson.
At one stage, John Hughes was going to be producer or director, according to Estevez. "When I was reading it, I thought it was so good, so close to my bone, that I had written it", said Hughes. "Emilio wants to direct it, and I'm sure he will be able to. He can do anything. He can act, he can write, he can direct. He's surpassed me in that respect. I can't act--I wish I could.
Estevez wound up writing 15 different drafts of the film. He said he had no intention of having his brother Charlie star in the movie, but Sheen said he wanted a part after reading the script. "He felt he needed a comedy at this point of his career", Estevez said.
Epic Pictures provided the $9 million budget for the film.
The film's title was changed to Pop 65 then to Men at Work.
Most of the movie was shot in Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach in California.
Charlie Sheen said his brother "was great.. . . He knew me too well. He'd say, 'Dude, let's get real here.' I respect the hell out of Emilio. He's very tai chi when it comes to directing."
Estevez says he wanted his brother to "sort of push the envelope and play the humor. He has a wonderful sense of humor, which hasn't really been put on film yet - up to now. Charlie has a very dry sense of humor, very cynical. And out of that comes some great, great humor."
Filming began in March 1989. The studio disliked the original ending; shooting the new one resulted in ten additional days of filming. Estevez edited the film while making Young Guns II during the day.
Estevez later said "For me to be able to do a movie where saving the environment is the underlying theme is the greatest contribution I can make, I think. More people are going to see what I'm doing in a film and be educated through entertainment than if I show up at a rally. I'm working on putting the causes I think we need to address into my work and into the projects I choose."

Golf clap for this awesomeness kind Sir! 👏 👏👏
This is one of my absolute favourite films growing up. Constantly rented from Blockbuster through the 90’s.
There are several sacred things in this world that you don't ever mess with. One of them happens to be another man's fries. Now you remember that, and you will live a long and healthy life.

The inside of the Chemlife factory scene was filmed at the Anheuser-Busch brewery, Van Nuys Ca. Specifically stock house #4 fermenting department where I worked. I watched them film for two or three days and only about a minute of film made the cut in the movie.
YES! Another overlooked CLASSIC!!! *Golf Clap*

Totally radical,dudes and dudettes! Gotta luv❤them 80s😎👍✌️
Their apartments were in Santa Monica. Ocean Ave and Montana. I lived in the neighborhood and remember how cool it was to see the movie using our neighborhood to film, which happened a lot more than I knew at the time

Absolutely underrated comedy classic. I saw it in the theaters, and watched it again within the last year, and it still makes me laugh out loud. Awesome.
This one is near and dear to me. I grew up in Redondo Beach and we would go watch it being filmed after school during my junior year.
I saw this movie again a few months ago, I saw it the first in the 90s. I did a search for a "locations" video in january 2024 .... and here it comes... great video!👍👍👍👌👌👌
I used to go down to Hermosa Beach every year to watch the Beach Volleyball championships and I stayed at the Sea Sprite Motel and ate at the Cafe 50’s. This was filmed right around the same time I used to go down in the late 80’s. Lots of good memories of that town. Great video Kurt.
Well done, I thought I was one of the only ones who cares about this gem still
As a kid i loved this movie. As an adult i still do.
“Where are my gloves?” “In the glove com-parta-mente.” One of my favorite films to this day… but hey, I’m a a furnologist!

I remember watching this as a kid in the 8th grade and I wanted to be a garbage man so bad LOL I thought it would be so cool! Thanks for taking down memory lane Kurt 😃🤘
Emilio owes Kurt for single-handedly keeping his film history alive.
Totally underrated gem! Awesome filming location! It was Keith David as Louis who absolutely stole the show! Seriously one of the funniest movies I've ever seen! I can't believe it was written overnight!
Funny...... We live 5 minutes from your opening shot for the vid. The 80's was and is the best decade ever..... Your film locations vids are some of the best, always a fun watch. At 10:43 gotta love the brick phone. The parking lot/park at 13:02 is locally known as "Burnout" because of the fire that burned down the Hollywood Riviera Country Club in 1958, the club was built in the late 1920's, the little Merry-Go-Around was just a movie prop put there just for filming. Great watch, top-notch work.
I was born in 76 so I was definitely an 80's kid and I have no regrets especially when it comes to all the cool and funny movies 😎 Goonies, Lost Boys, Gremlins, Wired Science....Oh yeah and Sixteen candles are some of my fav's amongst many others I could go on and on! Lol 😂 Great channel bro! Keep up the great content 👏
You were meant for this. We appreciate your attention to detail and effort in making these videos that sends us back in time, a time that was much, much better than what we're mired in now. You need your own star on the Hollywood walk of fame... or at the very least an interview with the Aceman.
One of my favorite movies! Starts off pretty funny, then Keith David shows up and elevates the movie to HILARIOUS! Lol. Thank you for this!! 👍👍
One of the hitmen (Biff) is Hawk Wolinski who is a keyboardist and composer. His most known work is with 70's funk band Rufus, but he has also composed songs for films. He also had an acting role in the Robert Blake film 'Electra Glide in Blue' (1973), playing a hippie who gets harassed by the cops and has drugs planted on him. His band 'Madura' also played in a concert scene in the film.

Hey Mario how bout this, ya mutha did.😊
I recall the apartments being on Torrance and Catalina just up from the Redondo Beach pier. There was a theater or playhouse on the corner if memory serves. I'd visit the sets regularly mostly by accident. If my days are correct Demi Moore was there for the golf clap filming. She was driving a Convertible Mercedes. I mention that because while working on the Last Boyscout she drove into a scene being filmed were Damon Wayons scratches the Rolls. Tony Scott yelled unrepeatable words that immediately changed to welcoming warmth when Bruce Willis recognized the car and everyone had a laugh. It's a small world for such a large city.
A. GREAT movie. B. Much respect for that hat!
Great job once again bro. I live in Detroit and never get to see this. Thanks from an 80s kid.
Chicka bow, chicka bow, chicka wow wow !!

Awesome!!!!! Loved this movie as a kid
Classic gem good job as usual Kurt!!!
Quality video, Kurt! Thank you!
Redondo Beach…that’s my stomping ground…I ride through there often to get to my locations…great episode!
Love the south bay "beach cities."
The house that was on knob Hill and esplanade was my grandpa's house, bud peck. A lot of good memories in that house during the 70's. When we watch this being filmed during 1989 there was other scenes filmed that never made it in the movie. They filmed at the gas station on PCH with El burrito jr and the back of the lot.
- Warm sun, beautiful women..... and the air is just right for drinking
I love that movie! That was some REAL comedy! I always wondered where exactly in LA this movie was filmed. All the locations looked very very familiar. I hope the next one you do is Charlie Sheen's 1987 movie No Man's Land. That movie was also filmed all over LA.
Superb character actor Darrell Larson (excellent in the moving drama TWICE IN A LIFETIME and in the Western variation to The Dirty Dozen, THE MAGIFICENT SEVEN RIDE!) plays the politician whose demise turns this cult comedy into a sort of steroid version of WEEKEND AT BERNIE´S. Thanks for the video!
I remember watching this movie In early 90s wen around 10 years love it
Love your videos. Thank you for making them
Kurt, you are my middleman when it comes to childhood nostalgia. You're the best man! Always watching you from the valley 818!
I actually found a couple of these locations years ago. I love this movie
I got my 1st job at a Movie Theater 🍿 and got to watch the early Screening of Men at Work almost a week before it came out for "Employee Appreciation Day". 😅
"Hi Kids, Are we having FUN yet???"
Loved this movie and watch it every year!!! Great one liners and acting by everyone! Good job Kurt!!
I liked that movie a lot. Great comedy.
You have been busy!!
4:00 "What happened, Mike? They take away your vroom vrooms?" 🤣
Such and underrated movie with tons of quotable lines. Remember that is Summer School's Francis "Chainsaw" Gremp as the pizza delivery guy/innocent bystander/hostage. Their rival SoCal stoner/surfer dude garbage truck drivers could have had a series of their own. "I would pay, a million pesos..."
Absolutely fantastic, kurt. love this. This is another awesome video.. Is there any chance of doing the film..class Act, I know its 90s but you did house party also 😊
I love the ending when the pizza guy’s girlfriend calls in the radio show and he gives her the advice that she should “ dump the dude!”

The Poorman was the DJ. Jim "the Poorman" Trenton was one of the original Love Line hosts on KROQ. He once had a girl pouring her heart out, and then you hear him munching on potato chips. Another time he had a girl on and she was complaining about her dude getting it on with a dog . And in the background, he's playing a dog barking.
