This example is a benchmark of why practical effects are better than CGI.

CGI movies are a video game you can't play.
AMAZING!!!! Practical Effects era magnificent!!!
The smile he has at the end, knowing it’s a job well done that still holds up today…. Priceless. I’ve always thought that replicating reality vs spaceships etc is so much harder as you’re always fighting the uncanny valley which doesn’t exist when you’re flying an imaginary spaceship etc. To mix life-action and models to a degree that folk don’t even know they are seeing an effect so don’t even have to suspend their disbelief… that’s the true magic.
Great movie, great effects, remember that take off scene, never realized that the aircraft in the foreground were models!
Outstanding craftmanship

I'm not a woman, but I like to have babies with some of these guys so maybe my family could have some true artistic talent.

Sadly this is a fast dying art. People relying on ones and zeroes too often these days.
The miniatures were so well done, that until I saw this video about the effects work, I literally thought alot of the aircraft in the movie were real! Job well done!
This is an amazing movie. I actually thought most of the planes were real for years.
For many that may not know Nigel constructed the Dropships for the movie "ALIENS". I've have spoken to him a few times on Facebook picking his brain about details of the model he made for that movie a very nice gentleman.

I also have segments with Nigel talking about Aliens, Empire of the Sun, Lost in Space, Goldeneye and others.
That was my favorite movie back when I was a kid. Still is today
Absolutely amazing- love all the forced perspective shots and then scale bombers- you really can’t tell the real from the miniature, outstanding work!!
Effing amazing
beautiful work
I have great admiration for the makers of miniature aircraft and ship models in the movies. There are some older magazines out there with photos and interviews that I enjoy like these videos. Some articles are in model aircraft magazines and some are in cinema effects magazines.
I'd love to have one of these.
I knew those shots used camera trickery, but I always thought it was the other way around. I never considered FOREGROUND miniatures of the planes. I’ve had it in reverse for years. I figured it was the real thing in the foreground with 1:1 replicas or 2D cutouts in the far background.

They did both. There were several 2D cutouts of B-17s around the airfield as well. You can see two of them directly above the real B-17s at 1:42, one of which is mostly hidden by the nose of a moving B-17, but the upper right one is clear if you know what you're looking at. They were smart by not swelling on them
I had no idea miniature were used for this movie outside of the crash scene! Absolutely stellar work.
I searched the take off scene on YT and tried my best to tell a real plane from the models. Wonderful work by the crew. Today's technology would've elevate miniature models to new heights.
This was an amazing movie. I never felt the fear of war in a movie until this one. I hope I never have to feel the fear of war for real.
At Movie World on the Gold Coast in QLD Australia, I remember back in the 80s (not sure if it's still there) they had one of these B17 scale models fitted on a stand and they would 'fire' it up with all the guns blazing..Amazing to see!
Well done 👍✈️
Absolutely blows my mind how clever they had to be before computers did everything.
clever clever people!
I just watched that scene and wondered how they did it. You tube answered.
I wish I could find a copy of the documentary somewhere without an insane mark up.

Most of these segments aren't on the DVD. My channel also has many new interviews not on the DVD. It's an ongoing project.

@@piercefilm well it's brilliant work. This is the magic of Cinema
Los aviones no eran reales ?? No lo puedo creer ..hoo nooo se sido engañadooo...Realmente un arte ..hecho por artistas
I envision a forced perspective airborne display of Boeing B-17F "Flying Fortress" USAAF Heavy Bombers in 1:32nd, 1:48th, 1:72nd, 1:144th, and 1:200th scales.
I agree. Impossible to tell where the Miniatures end and real B-51 begin. Outstanding work.
Perhaps has excitement has now wained for multiple, unlimited/STUPID amount of digital overlays but with that in mind I wince when I think how this film would have looked were it made ten years later! Such a great film. Like the bass guitar in the mix, if you notice it... Then you probably need a new bass player! 😉🏆
Dec. 13, 2022---Loe these shoert stories but what happens to a lot of these models after filming is complete?

Sold off or destroyed. Sometimes the model makers keep them. I seem to remember propstore.com selling some of these models.

@@piercefilm Ray Harryhausen kept many of his props, but they decayed beyond hope of salvage since latex foam was used, it does not age well.

A lost art... Movies were better with models. CGI is to overused!
