Memory (a wheel of time fanwork)

WoTIdol 2023 Entry
WoT Transformation of the song "All Too Well" by Taylor Swift, as performed by Jake Scott
Lyrics and piano/vocal performance by The Master of the Deck
Recorded at High-Five Studio in Milwaukee, WI
---
I walked out the door with you, I didn't know
That I was leaving myself and all my dreams behind too
And the shepherd boy died along with the sheep that night
I still remember, what that boy was like
Oh, What happened to his smile, And his wide-eyed gaze?
Maybe lost on the road or in the dark along the Ways,
After battles in the sky and too many scars to name
He's just a memory of those innocent days
And I know he's long gone and I can't be that boy no more,
I tried to hold on but I can't see the Light
'Cause there we are again in the woods that night,
A child born on a mountainside, in snow of red and white,
I was scared, you were there
I remember it all too well
Dragon banner on the ground, and your words stuck in my head
You knew long before I did that your friend was dead
A boy in Lord's clothing, I tried to be brave
And we flickered through a thousand worlds that I failed to save
I fell from the sky, and I know that I'm falling still
If run from all this long enough, I'll die when I'm needed to
'Cause there we are again in those halls of stone,
I tried to make her heart beat but her skin was growing cold
Blood again, on my hands
I remember it all too well, yeah
Maybe I got lost in that doorway
Maybe I asked for too much
Trying to live through the end of this is a dream I gave up,
Crowned with swords, Rand al’Thor
I remember him all too well
Yeah you locked me in the dark
Where I broke just like your promise
No lie so cruel as when an Aes Sedai is honest
Then I shattered like ravens on a battlefield
And he remembers it all too well
Time goes by, and you're not ready yet
To see who I was is gone, so you're still trying to find him
After nightmares and waking dreams no longer my own,
Now I look for the end, and I'm never alone
You think of that boy, and those sun bright days
But I'm a king in sheep's clothing, and my mouth's full of names
I can't get rid of them
Cause I remember them all too well, yeah
Cause here we again; please just let me go
I've climbed this mountain, now we know I'll never come back down
Almost time, let me die,
We remember it all too well
I was scared, you were there, I remember it all,
Blood again, on my hands, he remembers it all,
Almost time, let me die
I remember it all too well

What I will remember forever is how when this song was finally played in full in the final round, afterwards it cut back to the hosts, all of them were so choked up no one could talk for about 5 to 10 seconds. Matt the Innkeeper finally said something about the next song, but his voice was cracking and there were visible tears. That was every single fan at the end of this song. I feel so lucky to be part of such an amazing fandom! Master of the Deck, I can't say how deeply this touched me. It made me love Rand and his story even more, and I didn't think that was possible. Thank you for sharing your beautiful talent with us all.

15+ Rereads in and I’ve never felt Rand’s trauma as much as I did listening to this song. It RIPS OUT MY HEART. BRAVO! BRAVO!!

My sentiment exactly. There was so much written action and Lew's voice that Rand's emotional journey took a bit of a back seat. This creation really brought home that aspect. Had me in tears...exceptional.

I thought that all of the entries were amazing; I’m in awe of the talent on display. “Memory,“ though, was my favorite from the first time I heard it, and I’m really glad that it went all the way. Rand‘s arc in the series is both amazing and heartbreaking and this captured it so well.

This was brilliant! The lyrics showcase Rand’s emotional arc through the first seven books so, so beautifully! It’s done in a way that strips the rest of the story away and allows us to really experience the tragedy of what happened to him. This is heightened by your beautiful song delivery and amazing use of the first season footage! I loved it the first time I heard it, and the fact that it came back as a wild card to win the whole thing is also amazing! Congratulations!

I'm pretty much playing this on loop whenever I'm doing work here on the computer that I don't need full concentration for. thank the Light for 2 screens. so whenever I'm processing photos of koalas and nature, and checking emails and SM. this is just rolling over and over. I agree, the way you capture the heart with some of the pointed lines, just hits the soul in the way we all needed. thank you for all you are to us MOTD

Beautiful voice, wonderful writing, outstanding video editing, superlative adjective etc etc, just all around amazing work of art. Gives me that silly half laughing half crying feeling every time (and it was pretty funny seeing Innkeeper Hatch unable to speak after this played during the live show 😅)

This brought me to tears yet cheered me in dark times. The skill in the production was first rate but what really got me was the perfection in delivering the emotion by song and images. It is what makes music so powerful. Your friends and family must be immensely proud of their minstrel and her tales of yore. Thank you beautiful lady 💐

Ok one more comment... I've had this song on repeat today. This song is lyrically genius and the way you can feel the rawness in her voice that just rips you apart. I honestly never appreciated Rand's story until now. Added bonus of getting to actually visualize Rand through the brilliant Josha Stradowski. It all comes together like it was fated. Like, no lie, one of my new favorite songs, and not just wot parody songs, but any songs. Damn girl.

Well... it played at work and I could barely hear anything but the tune so naturally I thought it was this song and completely blanked out everything that was discussed in the morning meeting in my excitement to hear this in the wild.
