My Uncle George Wilson operated the signals at Ely and we would go and watch him pull and push those levers , he made it look so easy , He learnt the trade of railways by watching my Granddad and when he joined the army he was Sent to Liss near Portsmouth for more training, he drove Locomotives for the army and when he got married he was housed at the station house at Isleham, then Fordham because he had a big family R I P mate x

Another priceless video Roy - well done for capturing all the wonderful semaphore signals before they were dismantled. And a real bonus to see the inside workings of the 'boxes. Engineer's trains were really interesting - one with Class 56 haulage no less! Thank you so much for sharing your British Rail footage for us to see - I enjoyed every moment. Thanks for sharing Roy most enjoyable it's vintage but seems not to long ago .we still have semaphores at Worcester so some sixty years on from my first interest in railways so I don't miss them yet cos there still here.thanks for your efforts in our quite times .I'm Bustin to get further afield

Quite remarkable that it is only thirty years ago.

Roy I'm so glad you had the foresight to video these scenes, I'm a retired signalman and never thought the job would go and hence never bothered taking a camera to work, I never had a problem letting anyone in the box to take photos but can't remember anyone with a video camera, thank you Roy that was priceless footage.

Nice one Roy. I can remember when Ely was like this..a sea of semaphores.. Managed too get into both the North boxes but never made it too the Dock. Interesting times, more so than now. Great video.

Its difficult to find good locations to see the trains these days Paul, with all the track side trees, bushes and other obstructions. The stations are usually the best.

Ah, class 101's and 105's. Mainly gone and hopefully forgotten. Did the job in the 1950's - shouldn't have been doing it still in the 1980's! Ok - the class 47 at the start has been scrapped, not sure of the number of the 56 but two of the 37's are still around - 37023 - www.railadvent.co.uk/2019/11/class-37-locomotive-arrives-at-the-pontypool-and-blaenavon-railway.html 37219 (I think) - www.railwayherald.co.uk/imagingcentre/view/588878/LC Guess Roy they're still using those class 156's at Spalding ...

Yes Jon, mostly class 156's and 158's on the Peterborough - Lincoln services. (Better service due in May with the new timetable)
