    Even the release of captain marvel felt forced, it was between infinity war and 2 month before end game just so she could save iron man and the day at the last battle. It felt unearned because we knew all the characters for years except for her like how convenient for writers. If she was introduced before infinity war and they took the time to properly write her movie it would have been fine.

    Right. And now look at The Marvels release. A movie that completely hinges on what Carol did which caused so much hate for her and even earned her the name Annihilator. They didn't even bother to make a movie about it?!!? Such an important character moment for her and The Marvels! Got such poor treatment. I am surprised how little the Studio care about Carol. They first forced her introductory movie in btw 2 movies that even with poor writing and then when she needed Captain Marvel 2 , with Annihilator plot. They skiped it. Do they even care about her?

    When she shows up in the Endgame battle, I had literally forgotten she existed. And my girls were furious that the film artificially kept Wanda from defeating (or coming closest besides Tony) Thanos - which she was clearly on the edge of doing. Because they to had forgotten Carole even existed, but loved Wanda.

    I don't know... X-Men 1 & 2 take place 15 years after Logan lost his memory, but it still works to bring the audience into his perspective. So I don't think the four years in Captain Marvel is necessarily a big problem. Maybe the difference is that Logan was a loner, while Carol built a whole life offscreen during the time gap.

  • @TheWritersBlockOfficial

    @TheWritersBlockOfficial

    7 ай бұрын

    True. I don't think the time gap is INHERRENTLY a problem, but it worsens the issues in the writing specifically in captain marvel. With Logan, I feel they do a much better job endearing you to the character AND establishing his feelings about his lost memories (especially in 2) so you empathize with him much more intensely than Captain Marvel. Plus, the audience is also in the same boat specifically when it comes to being introduced to Xavier and his school

  • @92brunod

    @92brunod

    5 ай бұрын

    Building an entire life off-screen is entirely the issue. 20 seconds into seeing how Logan lives is enough to tell you about his character. Or at least what he's been doing. It also establishes a starting point (flaws) for his character arc so that he can show a personality change during the story. You CAN do a gap, of course, but you have to give your character, a character and a low starting point. If only they showed Carol not being comfortable in her life, being a loner who felt out of place, battling insecurities, etc, etc then yes, that would have worked better even with the gap. It's two entire different issues. One is her having a character and the other one is the empathy you can create by seeing her adapt to a new world. Since they decided to not give her flaws, at least they could've created empathy that way.

    There's something so awesome about seeing Nolan work with so many limitations. Like, yeah, interstellar is automatically cool because it's space. But the fact that Nolan makes this movie set in a motel, trailer park, and a few houses feel so compelling just shows his talent perfectly

    This is best explanation I've seen for why Captain Marvel really didn't work. I have felt for a long time that amnesia is a trope best avoided. I used to think it was just bad, I'm looking at you soap operas lol, but I think more it's just extremely difficult to pull off in a way that is compelling and not frustrating for the audience. In all honesty I'm not a fan of Nolan's work, but I feel like I should give Memento a try. It would be cool to see amnesia as a compelling point of a story. Hayley ^_^

    This movie caters to people like my mom. If she doesn't understand what's going on, even if she gets her answers by watching all the way through the movie, she wants to know so she's not confused for any period of time while watching it. By showing that she lost her memory before the plot really starts would keep people like my mom from asking, "Wait, what's happening? What are those flashbacks? Honey, what's going on?"

    Without a doubt, Carol Danvers is the most boring character in the MCU because there's nothing compelling about her, and yet she's propped up to be this great beacon. And I don't want to be like that, it makes me sound like a sexist, but all the other female characters (supers or otherwise) are way more compelling for all the reasons you listed Carol isn't. It really makes me wonder what MCU Kamala Khan sees in her because I'm pretty sure she's only ever on Earth to answer Fury's call to action, and then fight Thanos within Kamala's lifetime. She just goes back into space and then has hologram Zoom Meetings. What has she possibly done that Kamala even saw or could have seen through recordings that would make her a superfan? Carol's never on Earth! Nobody even likes the mention of Captain Marvel when she's brought up. Talos doesn't want to talk about her, Monica has it out for her because her mom got sick and Carol never showed up over the course of 20+ years, and everyone else doesn't know who she is or is indifferent because she's never around; the only one who seems excited to see her is Rocket Raccoon. And again, what a wasted moment because she's too powerful. I don't mind her being strong, but when all of Thanos' forces turn their attention to her, and it's just her, and she still blasts through them all with no problem, I can't care because she hasn't been around to have any lasting effect, and she didn't bring in all her space friends she should supposedly have, probably because nobody actually likes her company to begin with. I'm excited to see The Marvels, but it's all about Fury, Monica, Kamala, and Goose (and her litter of kittens!😻). They're going to be the lifeblood of that movie because Carol isn't going to be compelling unless they get her to play along with the shenanigans of the premise. To end things on a positive note, after just rewatching the Captain Marvel movie, she did have a few decent lines that got a chuckle out of me, she's at least got a couple of decent jokes, but wow, we gotta do something with this character or just move on to Monica and Kamala and have them take control of the Marvel mantel.

    I agree there are quite a few moments I really like with her, and I think that's cause Brie Larson is GREAT when you give her something to do. Heck, she was great in FAST X which... which... which Xists... She could legitimately be a RDJ/Tony Stark level fan favorite, but they didn't put the time and attention into her character (at least in the first film. Seeing The Marvels on Monday) but, they focused on the powers not the person. Like, Iron Man works so well because of Tony Being in the suit. Because we care about him and seeing his powers and abilities progress. Carol Danvers is in a really weird spot right now, and she has SO much potential that I hope they do more with her. While it's technically another Zoom call, I actually liked the characterization of her a lot in the end credits of Shang Chi. I think they captured a bit more of what Makes Brie Larson fun to watch, so hoping that continues. And I also think she can be really interesting when put in the mix with the new class from phase 4. Honestly, she'd be super interesting to see work alongside the Eternals. That movie is rough around the edges, but the team is so fun and interesting that I hope they get integrated into the rest of the MCU soon.

    Rocket being excited when she came was even out of character (the last time they talked, they exchanged jabs). Jimmy Woo also spoke highly of her, but like Kamala, only due to her powers. Nothing about her heroics. Kamala also excused Carol's absence with "a woman's gotta live". Marvel is basically saying that if we scrutinize this character, we're scrutinizing women. But that's not how its works!!! They themselves made her the most powerful, so there's no one else that she could be compared to. Thanos culling half the universe could be attributed to her because she was absent, but Kamala ain't seeing this. Marvel gave Carol great powers, but none of the responsibility. Hell, the only characterization they gave her are marketable traits, not actual character journey.

    Whenever people ask me for movie recommendations I *always* suggest Memento first. I don't give away any details about the story but I explain the structure of the film because that's more important. The first scene is the end of the story and the second scene is the beginning of the story. The film zigzags back and forth between the monochromatic first half and the colored second half with the monochromatic scenes going forward and the colored scenes going backward until the end of the film, which is the middle of the story, where the last monochromatic scene becomes the first colored scene. That explanation alone is enough to get people intrigued, confused and excited about Memento. I love watching KZread reactions to Memento because they are how I imagine my friends and coworkers seeing it!

    Tales of the Abyss is one of my favorite stories, and has this same kind of memory loss protagonist as Captain Marvel. Luke, the protagonist, lost his memories years before the plot started. His amnesia lets him learn stuff alongside the audience, while still having developed him own distinct, strong personality before we even start. People know him, he knows the people around him, and little exposition is needed to tell us things in a forced manner. You can make just about any narrative structure work if you do it well. Captain Marvel's problem isn't it's structure, its that its poorly written.

    That reading of KOTOR is likely an oversimplification. There's a good chance Revan never actually fell to the Dark Side, like Count Dooku. Notice Dooku never got the Sith Eyes? He wasn't corrupted by the Dark Side. He sided with the Separatists because he thought that was the right thing to do. Revan? Arguably the same thing. He HAD to become the Lord of the Sith, to find and probably destroy the Star Forge. I'm pretty sure the Council didn't believe him and Malak. Although, the great thing about both characters and the media they're in (until the SWTOR MMO ruins Revan, at least) is the writing is so good, it's open to interpretation. MAYBE Revan really DID fall. Or maybe he didn't. I don't think we ever get to see his eyes as Darth Revan. Maybe he had the Sith Eyes. Also, I'm not sure BioWare even knew that was a detail they could use, like Lucas did with Dooku. But it's kind of irrelevant lol. Either way, I think he CHOSE to become Sith for a good reason. The question is, did the Dark Side corrupt him before Malak betrayed him or not? It clearly DID corrupt Malak.

    Great write-up. Instant subscription. The writers could've chosen another narrative path, though. Why not go linear and start the movie out depicting Carol as a hotshot fighter pilot; we get to spend 25-30 minutes fleshing out her impulsive nature, her deep bond with Maria and Monica and culminate in the accident. Then she seemingly awakes on Hala and is being told that all of this was a simulation - they could add Jude Law looking on in the background of her memories to drive that lie home and even fool us to a certain degree. Follow that up with an actually successful Starforce mission where we witness her banter with some of her peers, take the piss out of others and especially connect with Minerva. The second mission is where things go awry and the Skrulls snatch her up. From hereon out, the story could follow about the same beats presented in the final product - only now both her reunion with Maria and Starforce betraying her both pack a genuine punch.

    They could solve ALL that by literally writing what happened to her….fuck it they could let us hear or see what she is thinking of, for example when we saw her as a “female with no memory” we are seeing things from her mind; she doesn't remember so we don't too right? So they should have let us hear what she thinks and if she could remember a small memory or maybe if something triggered a memory all that can be shown to us as we are in her mind, small things like that would make us understand her more if they just showed us SOMETHING from her past. Or they can keep it like a (totally lost memory character ) BUT make her learn from the start what I mean is they will make her forget everything right? She will also lose her memory about how to use her powers meaning she will work hard to be a better warrior not just a straight-up badass from the start and nothing can stop her if we can see her struggle it will make us see who she was in the past while we are all in her future mind we will grow up with her throughout the movie. They should have made her lose a lot of her fights in the movie and should have made us doubt if she is a hero at this point because of how weak and fragile she is but she will stand up again and fight so that we can feel like she earned the winning because she went through so much to get to this point we will feel sympathy and sadness towards her because not only she doesn't remember who she is, but she had to go through hell to remember who she is THEN and only then when she becomes the badass fighter we will feel happy and proud of her.

    There ARE fantastically written films and shows with strong female characters that will appeal to both sexes. Disney is only looking for crap stories, execrably written to wrap around female characters no one cares about. 1883 is one such story. I dare anyone to watch the first 4 minutes of Episode 1 and not want to find out more about Elsa Dutton's story. Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Sam Elliot give outstanding performances with cameos by Tom Hanks and Billy Bob Thornton. But it is Isabel May as 17 year old Elsa that steals the show and is at the heart of not just 1883, but also all the seasons of the shows 1923 and Yellowstone with Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner.

I think she's objectively an underwritten character (up until this latest movie which I really enjoyed) but there are many people who wouldn't like her even if she was well written. The Marvels does a considerably better job with the character than Captain Marvel, but it won't change a lot of people's minds because there's a great deal of bias already swaying their view. It's similar to Barbie, where the praise or criticism in the movie got so wrapped up in real world political discussions that very few people can actively discuss the movie by itself

    "Why is that?" Because Brie Larson is a horrible actor and an even worse "human being", if you can even call her that. They had to CGI in her smile and most of her facial features in Endgame. That's all i'll say.
