Turning a motif into a melody is one of the most fundamental and important skills that a composer can master. In this video, we'll learn how motifs can be turned into different types of phrases. We'll learn about the mono-motivic phrase, poly-motivic phrase, and what makes the difference between a question and answer phrase when writing melodies.

I'm really loving this series! Thanks for making it. I have a question, though: why only five basic types of punctuation, when in your book on musical storytelling you describe nine parameters of music? Can't the other parameters be used too?

Definitely! This video focuses on the most common and useful strategies, but they're not the only ones. Essentially any strategy that helps reduce the momentum of your music can be used to create punctuation in your music :)

2:35 You said that the difference between a motif and a phrase is that the phrase sounds complete on its own. What if the motif already sounds complete? Is it then already a phrase or is it a bad motif?
