Melly's Project 1987 Honda Rebel 250 "Barney" Part 18 (Updates & New Custom Work)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Back at it on Barney today, Melly's 1987 Honda Rebel 250. After a long while away from the project, time to get stuck back in. Since we are mandated to "self-isolate" here in the State of Michigan due to Covid19 situation, what better time than now to get working on Barney and hopefully cure some shut-in stir craziness that we are experiencing! LOL
The street tracker design theme is dead in it's "tracks".... Was just going to make Barney too heavy, bulky, and busy with the subframe. Since the #1 design rule for Project Barney is that we can NOT modify the frame to the point where it's not reversible. So after a long ponder and some searching for inspiration, Melly and I decided on a more classic and custom style. Not quite a bobber, but something we both think will look really nice.
Just an update video (again, ya we know! LOL) so nothing too revealing. We do an overview of the little things that have changed and been modified since we last posted.
Thanks for watching! Always appreciated!
Cheers!

    I remember the days of watching all the Barney updates when I first bought my 250. I was a much younger man back then, and my 250 has come a long way since. Welcome back!

    I have followed "Barney" from vid#1. Very, VERY few people hang on to one project as long as y'all have. And for that I am impressed. I will continue to follow this till the end. Sounds like good future ideas, and what has been done so far is looking great as it is! Wishing y'all the absolute best. Stay safe out there!

    Have just watched this whole playlist and loved it! Got a 250 in March 2021 and it's inspiring seeing all the mods you've made. The tach/speedometer setup is really nice! I'm going to try and build a new passenger seat as the stock one is a little narrow.

    Hey!! Great to see you guys back working on Barney. It’s been too long. One good thing about Covid 19!!! Hoping isolation lasts long enough for you to get this finished!!

    Very cool! I love watching people customize their bikes. I have a 96 V-4 Magna with 32K miles and still ticking. Just replaced the front tire, wheel bearings and brake pads since I had the wheel off. Looking forward to seeing more work!

    Nice seeing you both back! Barney is a great project, I love where it is going. Hey, what brand is that back tire? I don't recall seeing that thread pattern. Ok, time to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty!!!! Keep the videos coming, we can't get enough!!! Stay safe, Alex and the "I miss them" Lola

    Oooh, that's a cool idea with the dummy oil tank! Do you have any more details on how you are handling the air oil separator valve with the airbox removed? I know some people take that off and just use a pod filter, but I've heard the engine won't run as well and will need to be rejetted. And if you happen to be looking for a buyer for the Shadow front fender, I might be interested :)

    We have a K&N Pod filter for the carb and the air breather tube at the top of the engine. We will end up rebuilding and rejetting the carb. Barney always needed choke for a long time to keep running so tearing down the carb was on the to-do list anyway. So we will just rejet at the time. I have a local shop that can help us out to get it dialed right in. Thanks for watching! Mike & Melly

    I enjoy watching your videos. I really like those handle bars. Do you happen to have a link to them? I cannot seem to find them anywhere. I checked amazon of course and even a google search doesn't return much information. Thanks!

    What did you guys use for crank seal and the oil seal were they genuine Honda or did you go aftermarket. Also did your seals have the spring built in. Any help will be great thank you

  • @RenchRanch

    I had tried the Genuine Honda parts and they ended up leaking again.... unreal. Shortly after the video where we fixed the seal, we ended up changing it out again. This time we got them from the Autoparts store. I don't remember the part number, BUT if you look at the Honda parts diagram from sites like Bike Bandit or Revzilla, Honda actually states the size of the seals in metric. With that information I was able to look them up online. We ended up getting Timken Oil seals (made in USA). They haven't leaked at all. Still did the Red Loctite to make sure they don't back out. Keep in mind there will always be some oil seepage from the bottom of the stator cover. In taking Barney apart you can clearly see that there is a oil channel on a bronze bushing the is part of the one-way clutch used for the starter. This allows a tiny bit of oil to get past and lubricate the chain and its gears. There is also a z shaped channel at the very bottom of the cover. This allows any built up oil residue to exit. So it will always have some seepage. There shouldn't be constant drips. Hope this helps> Regards Mike & Melly!

    I see you have a cone filter on there. What did you do for jetting?

  • @RenchRanch

    @RenchRanch

    3 жыл бұрын

    Actually haven't got to the re-jetting part yet. We really need to take the carb apart and clean it. For sure it will need to run a little richer. The pod filter is a K&N unit. I don't remember the part number but I simply measured the carb opening. The crank breather is just a small filter too clamped directly to the engine. With the less restrictive exhaust and pod filter I suspect we will have to go 2 jet sizes to richen the mixture. But I don't know just yet. The reason there hasn't been any new Barney, Honda Rebel CMX 250 videos lately is because the garage had to be rebuilt due to foundations issues. With Covid and such it's been a long process. I have a video up on the channel about the garage. Hopefully once the garage is done we can get back to working on Barney. Lots left to do. Thanks for watching. Mike & Melly

    The bars on there now are dirt cheap Biker Master ones we got from Amazon. They are 7/8". The exhaust is the stock 87 Rebel 250 with the OEM mufflers cut off. Then a pair of Emgo 27" Dunstall Replicas are just slip-ons. DEI Titanium pipe-wrap over the original head pipes to hide the rust. Should be a video in the playlist. Cheers! Mike & Melly

    Do you have a video on Rebel needing to run with choke on?

  • @RenchRanch

    @RenchRanch

    Not yet, but I can bet the cab needs cleaned. Usually that is a very strong indication when your bike won't run right without the chock on even after it's warmed up. A lot of times you can get away with a good cleaning and not need new parts or s rebuild kit. Good luck with the Rebel. Mike & Melly

    I love your channel and love watching the two of you together. You two go together like peanut butter and jelly. I can't believe I am saying this, but I am really digging that Rebel 250. One question though, is the bracket for the front of the seat going to be removable? Only reason I ask is that it looks like it would be hard to get the tank off if need be with that bracket in the way. I know you can get the nut off, but would you be able to lift the tank? One bonus of the lockdown is I get to watch this video.

  • @RenchRanch

    @RenchRanch

    4 жыл бұрын

    The bracket isn't finished yet. The bottom portion is bolted onto the springer seat frame and original Rebel fuel tank mount, the upper part welds to that. The whole bracket is removable.. To get the tank off once the seat bracket is finalized, just have to unbolt the seat pivot, then the bracket, lastly the 3 mounting bolts that hold the tank on. Comes right off. Melly and I mocked it up and gave it a try. Should be all good. Thanks for watching! Mike & Melly
