Arachne made a tapestry that, while beautiful and better than Athena's, was designed around the various blunders and exploits of the gods, to mock them. She was so terrified of how this would be received once she'd actually done it that she fled the scene and hanged herself, and Athena turned her into a spider as an act of mercy so that she could weave forever.

@@visionofsolace8961 In the original myth Arachne was going to k!ll herself after being scolded by Athena. Athena turned her into a spider to stop her from committing suicide. Not the greatest response from the goddess of wisdom, tbf I don't think I'd be less suicidal if I were magically turned into a spider. But she was allowed to continue doing the thing she was amazing at, which is more than can be said for some of the others the gods have literally and metaphorically fucked over.

@@visionofsolace8961 The version of the myth I recall has Athena and Arachne engage in a weaving competition, in which Arachne deliberately creates images (deservedly) mocking the gods, which indicates to Athena that she very much did not learn her lesson from a goddess manifesting to hubris-check her. However, most of the information we have on the myth comes from Ovid, who had a habit of massively altering older myths to fit his anti-establishment narrative (Medusa being the most infamous example), so it is little surprise that in the main version we have from him, Athena is shown as petty as possible.

I imagine that'll be a thing in the full game. A thing with hades 1 was letting the "sinners" of the underworld lighten their sentence- Achilles to be with Patroclus, Orpheus to be with Eurydice, Sisyphus to not have to push the boulder for all time. In this case it's probably to fix the wrongs the gods enacted out of pettiness. Arachne for beating Athena at weaving and turned her into a spider; Narcissus, who Nemesis proclaimed that Narcissus would never be able to be loved b the one he fell in love with because Ameinas was ignored by him; Echo, who Hera cursed to only speak the last words spoken to her because she was ordered to lie to Hera about Zeus' infidelity with the Nymphs; Heracles, who Hera went out of her way to make his life a living hell because again, Zeus; Icarus, who Helios punished him for his hubris of flight There's even a few others. Scylla was poisoned by Aphitrite and turned into a monster, or in some accounts it was Circe who poisoned her. if Dora is (probably) Pandora, then she was the first woman who was made by the gods purely to punish mankind for 'stealing' fire (Prometheus gave it to them) by giving her a pythos containing all of the world's misery and disease.

It depends on the version there is a version where arachnes weaving was good but the subject matter offended athena and she tore Archnes work down Arcachne felt bad for offending athena and hung herself but athena felt pity and loosened the rope which turned into a cobweb and arachne into a spider

I actually like that look they gave her, she is not just sentient spider (like, actual animal) but not hot spider-mommy either. In the first case it would be harder to emotionally bound to her as to person, in the second - "punishment"/"curse" part of the transformation would be missed But yeah she is clearly unfit for active sexual relationship. (Make this into glorious "would you love me if i was turned into worm?" or tales about hero being not picky and in reward monster/ugly/old turned into super beauty because that was a test) They bring so much comfort to each other so i cant help but ship hard, yet i doubt Supergiant will let Mel undo thre curse placed on Arachna (beat Chronos into helping with curse lol, sure time magic can rewind body to the previous shape)

Could be...game is in Early Access, there are parts of the game still in development. Athena at the moment is not a god/goddess offering boons to Melinoe. There is a portion of Melinoe's task in slaying Kronos involves going to Olympus, so she might encounter Athena and the other Olympians (Ares and Dionysus).
