I had the honour and privilege to meet Mel Brooks in Trafalgar Square, London, in September 2017. I was on my way to the National Gallery with my date and noticed an elderly man seated next to the lawn, reading a book. I looked at him thinking: "that man looks like Mel Brooks..." Then he looked up at me and nodded with pride: "Yes!" So I rushed to him with open arms and we chatted. What a charming gentleman. It was a magic moment and I remember it with so much happiness.

Mel Brooks. The man who said what could not /should not /MUST not be said and made us laugh our fool heads off while doing it. Could you imagine the reaction if someone tried to put 'Blazing Saddles' or 'The Producers' on the big screen nowadays? Activists would lose their freaking minds and call him a racist, forgetting all the while that he was a Jewish veteran who worked EOD in occupied Germany and who had made his entire living using sarcasm and satire to hoist EVERY group on their own petard and setting fire to every sacred cow he could fit onto celluloid. Nothing was off limits and nothing too far. 'National treasure' doesn't even begin to cover it. Comedians and commentators the world over owe him a debt that they'll be paying off for decades.

@@scudball1840 There's a fine but distinct line between sarcasm /satire and mockery. Where 'cancel culture' types get it wrong is that if there is any question as to whether or not something was satire or mockery, they automatically assume that it's the latter. They'd rather accuse the insult rather than laugh at the mirror being shown them. Some cancellations are right on target... Kevin Spacey, Bill Cosby, Jussie Smollet for example. Those dudes did crap that got them exiled with every justification in the world. But a lot of activist types also cancel the wrong people for the wrong reason just because it fits their agenda.

An absolute legend and his body of work is a masterclass in comedy. The way he conducted and conducts his life is a model of class. Rather than lament the loss we will feel when he ultimately leaves us, take it as a clarion call to all in the field to rise to take the baton and carry it forward- that will be a true honor to Mel Brooks. That and re- name the Hollywood Freeway the William J. LePetomane throughway- toll 10 cents

Mel Brooks has meaning in my heart that makes the status of Iconic & legendary seem like small potatoes in my world. I am age 60 now but back when I was 16 years old in 1980 without knowing much about him, I auditioned for a high 😂school musical comedy called “All American” & was cast lead role. My character was Professor Stanislaus Fodorski a European Immigrant who falls for a fellow American colleague. Being a Chemistry/ Physics scholar not knowing much about football, somehow applying logic & academics to how the the game was being coached & perhaps why the team could never win, somehow turns a hopeless football team into state champions. A show that was a couple decades before I starred in it, was a hit 3:15 on Broadway, I found out much later that Ray Bolger, the multi-Award winning Actor/ Dancer who played the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz played my Mel Brooks written part in his very own Play that was a success on Broadway long before I knew much about Mel Brooks the mega talent. Today Young Frankenstein is one of my favourite movies.

I had the honor to meet Mr Brooks in 2015 in Schenectady, NY when he was traveling around showing Blazing Saddles on the big screen. My daughter got tickets and made it a 60th birthday present. We had pizza for dinner, hey it's NY!, and then went to a little coffee shop to get a coffee and canoli. Who should be there but Mel yukking it up with the owners. I stood aside and when he finished he saw me waiting and came up to me hand outstretched. The first thing he did was ask my name. It seemed so important to him. I thanked him for many years of laughter in mine and my families life. I told him that I drove 17 hours from SC in a '92 Ford pickup to see him and explained the birthday present and pointed out my daughter. Of course she was too starstruck to get a picture. He made me feel important and that the honor was his. What a kind and humble man. It was also a joy to watch the movie with 1500 other fans who all knew every line in the movie. I think he was 93 at the time and sharp as a tack and still is. God bless you Melvin Kaminski!

Greatest american comedian EVER!!! This is one of the wrongest things the Oscars telecast does, eliminate the honorary oscar category from the main show. That always was the absolute HIGHLIGHT from the ceremony. We left very few living legends, you should be celebrating them, AMPAS, instead of sideline them into a minor ceremony. And btw... WHEN you're gonna give JOHN WILLIAMS an honorary oscar???? The man only has more than 50 nominations. About TIME!

Mel Brooks is an incredible film lover and he is absolutely brilliant. A great parody is also an homage. He laid the groundwork for later wacky comedy of the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker variety. What a treasure!
