Megyn Kelly Roundtable: Scarlett Johansson Faces Backlash For Transgender Role | Megyn Kelly TODAY

NBC’s Craig Melvin and “American Ninja Warrior” hosts Akbar Gbaja-Biamila and Matt Iseman join Megyn Kelly TODAY for a roundtable discussion about the controversy surrounding the casting of Scarlett Johansson as a transgender man in her new film. Megyn wonders if critics have a point. “No, I don’t think so,” Gbaja-Biamila said. “You have to first define acting. Acting is creating a real behavior in the imaginary world of script”.

    Why not get a transgender person on your panel for their response?

    Because, no one cares. CIS people are 99.7 %, nobody really cares if your super sensible feelings are hurt (AGAIN). The success does not depend on your opinion.

    That percentage is a fabricated figure. 0.000001% of a population of 325,719,178 comes out to just 3 people. The William Institute Study estimates there are 1,397,150 people or 0.58% who identity as transgender. With over 78,000 transgender people in the state of New York and GLAAD headquartered in New York City, they could not even find one to be on the panel?

    If no one cared there would be no need for this segment of the show to exist in the first place. And if you really don't care you wouldn't be watching it, or spending time out of your day to express your opinions in the comment section.

    And your point is? You may disagree with that, but how about letting someone actually speak for their own community instead of having cisgender people speak for them.

    I am all for opening up roles for all marginalized groups. BUT, I feel while the audition process should be open to all, the part should be given to whomever plays it the best. That's for all roles period. Which means transgender people can also play cis roles if they are the best for the part. Limiting the role a person can play is how Hollywood initially kept marginalized groups out of the their projects, and ultimately the art suffers. We as society need to continue progressing and opening doors for all, but in this process we must be careful that in progressing in one area that it doesn't cause regression in another

    I think the “best” person for the role is pretty subjective. There are so many great trans actors. It’s a biopic about a trans man, who even in his obituary was referred to as a “woman who insisted on being called a man” or something to that effect. He was marginalized his whole life. So subjectively, I think the best person for that role has to be someone actually a part of the marginalized group. I personally don’t see how a cis actor could ever be the “best” person for that role. There’s no way for anyone to determine who is ultimately the absolute best person for this role since it’s all opinion. There are probably a lot of people who could give a great performance. So you might as well actually represent the community and cast a trans actor instead of just profiting off a trans man’s story. That’s how I see it at least

  • @christinajudge3251

    Rachel C I agree that there are a lot of great tran actors who are being underutilized, but my point is not specific to just this movie. If we say that only a trans can play roles like this because of the topic and life experience it is the same as people saying trans can't play cis roles for that same reason. And that is part of the problem and what is keeping trans actors underutilized, by not even considering them for anything other than the obvious. To break the cycle pattern we have to look at the whole not just specific.

  • @rachelc6164

    @rachelc6164

    6 жыл бұрын

    Christina Judge My point was that there’s no such thing as an objective “best” person for a certain role, so the argument that we should cast the “best” person regardless of gender identity doesn’t make sense to me. The movie centers around the trans experience, the experience of an oppressed minority. All I’m saying is that if you are writing a movie about an oppressed minority, you should cast someone who is that minority. You would never cast a white man as Martin Luther King without expecting public backlash. In the same vein you shouldn’t cast a cis woman in a story about a historical trans male figure. I have to agree to disagree that saying a cis person can’t play this role is the same as saying a trans person couldn’t play a cis role. As an LGBT person I really don’t think that’s part of why we’re underrepresented. Very few movies specify that a character is cis. They just specify man or woman, and since trans women *are* women, a character that is simply identified as a woman could be played by a cis woman or a trans woman. But if a character is specified as a trans man, it should be played by a trans man. Again, just how I see it as a member of the LGBT community

  • @christinajudge3251

    @christinajudge3251

    Rachel C I respect ur viewpoint, I agree with aspect of it. I just dont want a precident to be set that will be used against further progression in the future. Being a minority myself, I have seen certain stances come back later and be used against us, and I just think people should look at the situation from a broader view sometimes so there is no backsliding later.

    And the series Transparent? Still current, no backlash. Trans women are at the forefront of the backlash against Scarlett, yet trans men have very little coverage or their stories told...They want to attack women, per usual. The Jarrod Leto and various other male actors have gotten little backlash, Scarlet was bullied until dropping the movie all-together. Funny how that double standard works. Not a win for the trans community. She was the big name that gave the movie investments to reach a much wider audience.

    they wanted a big name actress to play the role to bring in big audiences. I don't think it had anything to do with sexism. Also, any men have played transwomen and no one says anything about that. double standards. I think directors and producers should just open up the audition process to the trans community. it was their fault. I think a lot of trans people would have loved to play that role.

    If the paper had been given to Leonardo DiCaprio everyone would be saying that he is the best and that he will make a great character, I did not see such a scandal with Jared Leto in his interpretation of a transgender that gave him an Oscar, besides they forget that it is the director's decision to choose who is the right person for the role, it is not an imposition of the people, the sexual orientation of the actor is what matters least when acting talent is talent that simple ...

Just like Autistic actors deserve to play autistic parts...Just like Asian actors deserve to play Asian actors...and so on. what annoys me is... and i don't want to offend anyone. what are people wanting then are they saying that just because a person is trans they are better actors and should just be given the role? only asking because Scarlett has proven she can tackle many different kinds of roles and if she was the strongest individual for the role isn't it only right she gets it? playing a different role and taking on someone else's narrative is what films. tv and plays is all about. does this mean from now all LGBT roles can only be offered to LGBT people what about a 30 year old playing a 20 year old... an irish man playing american an american being a british person. i just worry that soon enough no matter what we say or do....someone will be offended! I've been reading so much hate towards scarlet when all she has been is a supporter go the LGBT community and by someone with her platform could raise so much awareness for the community.

    I personally would suggest the trans and whoever else community watch Her in this movie and instead of shunning her, look at the kind of talent Hollywood is looking for and why they may have cast her. But also of course, it may have nothing to do with talent (i personally didnt enjoy her last film acting). It simply may be that through connections, her looks, etc., she was cast but what it all comes down to is that it's her time to shine and she deserves it so embrace that with her ffs.

    Exactly. I am transgender ftm and i do understand that she is a good actress but the whole film is based around a ftm transgender person and do you really believe the best person to step into those shoes is a cis person? No , it's not. For trans actors, trans roles aren't different from who they really are and they can much better perform it. It also is an opportunity to talk about trans rights and issues in interviews which i doubt Scarlett will do and even if she does it's not her story and she can't connect or relate to it at all. We need someone who doesn't just act the role but will understand it and explain why it's so important. It's based on transgender people so why is there not a transgender person playing it?

    The transgender community stays attacking women. What about the show Transparent? What about the various transgender roles men have played? For ONCE, the media is actually acknowledging female to male transgender folks, and the blacklash being heard is by male to female transgender folks, rather than the group that is being referenced in the movie. This is just an excuse for male to female transgender people to hate on women AGAIN.

    Sarah Koob, if you've lived anywhere in this world, you'll know that women DON'T have equal opportunities in the work place, dating and life in general that male-born people do. It's only been talked about it for the last thousand years or so, with little advancement. Women are resentful that a group of people, no matter how you identify, is actively trying to redefine their own identity (by calling them cis-women, for starters) to appease the other group (trans women. That's oppressive. Trans women activists aren't out there advocating against work place discrimination, equal pay, objectification, police brutality, etc like other liberation movements, instead they focus all of their attention to women - intimidating women's health organizations that offer cervical cancer screenings to change their language from "women" to "people with a cervix", bullying organizations that give access to tampons and pads to low-income women to change their language from "women" to "menstrators", going after various Planned Parenthood chapters to not make their organizations about "women with vaginas", bullying and physically blocking and threatening women's meetings from happening, as well as the women in attendance, because they were critical gender....the list goes on and on. This is sexism, and it is definitely aimed at women by trans women.

(Read this article: newsinteractive.post-gazette.com/thedigs/2014/02/17/the-complex-and-tough-dante-tex-gill/ ). This is just rewriting the complex story of a butch lesbian woman and just disgracefully erasing them from history. All and all, I also agree that transgender actors/actresses should get more chances in Hollywood and should be given the same chances as cisgender actors. Of course, if they are right for the part, still need to have the skills. But in this case, it is just wrong do plainfully attack this project for that reason. Because, like I said, its a story about a butch androgynous lesbian woman who dressed up like a man.

    That was because the movie sucked. Would it have been more successful, if they would have made the exact same movie with an asian actress? I doubt that.

    La Fleur- the point isn't whether or not the movie would or could have been successful with a different actress. The point is that the studio executives themselves admitted that the controversy was a major factor in why it flopped, which meant that scar jo was a liability and not an asset; and therefore unjustified in the many chances and huge paychecks that they throw at her without more careful consideration.

    Mac-Attack They know it. That is the reason why they never casted an asian actress for the role. How many japanese movies, played by japanese actors are super successful in western theatres? You can complain, that they should have casted an asian girl, but the reality is, we don't watch it, that is why they won't cast an asian girl. The movie sucked, because there was never a need for a real life movie.
