I was simply agreeing with Maher's observation that these people talk and act as if they are correct in every single observation and recommendation about the world as it pertains to them. But I agree with you that someone could say that about any group. The difference is, the trans group in particular displays what Maher is talking about - what we say goes and is right, and if you don't agree with us you're a "transphobe," a bigot, and any other label we can come up with. I don't see that in the black community, Asian community, Latino community, or any smaller racial categories, or whites for that matter. Other people know the world is a complex place with complex solutions to difficult problems. The transactivists just want everyone to agree with them on everything or else we're bigots. They're wrong. Because basic science is in opposition to them. Male/female is natural biological law, and there is not ONE single mammal that breaks that law. You can't find a single example to the contrary in nature. And I'm not talking about intersex, which is not what we're talking about here. I think they need mental health counseling, which is also what science said for decades until they caved to popular opinion and abandoned rationality and objectivity and we started enabling everyone and giving hormone suppressors to 10 year olds, which is child abuse. This has NOTHING to do with bigotry.

I'm conservative and actually I am warming up to Maher. I could not stand him during Trump but now he is actually broken out of nonstop complaining about Trump and speaking truth lately. I completely agree the left has gone insane. I am not saying Republicans are perfect, FAR FROM IT, but they are not trying to cancel anyone that disagrees with them. I dont agree with Maher 100% of the time but lately I applaud and respect him for pushing back against this cancel culture shit. I'm a transwoman who transitioned 30 years ago. IMO Dave Chapelle's special should NOT be banned from Netflix! After all, don't Dave and I both have a right to self-expression? It is my right to express myself as the person and gender that I am. It is Dave's right to express his beliefs. If only one view is allowed to be expressed, how can we have a conversation? Did Dave say some things that I disagreed with? Yes. Are there people who still do not accept me for who I am. Yes. That's okay. We can still treat each other with curtesy and respect, can't we? Dave's special brought up a lot of things about trans people. If the conversation were about what he actually said, that conversation could be constructive. People could learn some things. As it is, the woke Twitter people have made it about them. It has become about shutting down opposition to a correct way of viewing and speaking about the issue. What does it say about them that they tormented an actual trans woman for failing to conform to their ideology?

John McWhorter calls them "The Elect". I say "Don't get high on your own (rhetoric) supply". As he says, this is basically a religion for them.

I live in a Hispanic neighborhood in Echo Park, and a bunch of my neighbors are asking me, 'What does LatinX mean?' And I asked,' well don't YOU know? It's your people. Why would you ask me?" And ALL of them proclaimed "We didn't make it up, your people(white people) gave us that name!" Wow.

This is so ridiculous. Of all the real threats humanity is facing, Dave Chappelle is an imagined one. I can only hope to have the kind of tribute that Dave Chappelle gave Daphne at the end of my life. I was moved to tears. His special was powerful, moving, brilliant, compassionate, angry, funny and fully human.

I'm a lefty, but holy hell I am fed up with the hypocrisy over here. Like yeah, it's pretty obvious why we lose elections, and it's frustrating to see. The left is supposed to be socially-"libertarian", yet have become far from it. Yang and McWhorter are what Democrats SHOULD be. I have my issues with Maher with regards to his love of almost right-wing economic policies, but it's the social stuff I almost always agree with.

The point is that it wouldn’t be controversial if Dave was making fun of white girls instead of trans people. It’s OKAY to be transphobic. You don’t have to accept that men can become women. 95% of people outraged over the people's outrage over the special haven't actually seen the outrage or read the criticism of Dave's special. Lots of outrage in this country and very little understanding, on both sides. Plenty of measured and reasonable articles criticizing Dave's special, but no one ever brings those up when criticizing the "outrage".

I watched Chappelle’s ‘The Closer’. Then, I took his advice & watched all of his previous specials. In support of Trans’, they sure got the cherrypicking part ‘down pat’. In support of Dave, he really IS as good as he says he is.

In therapy I learned that I am responsible for my own feelings. Other people don't have to tiptoe around them. If you have feelings about what Dave Chappelle says, turn off the TV and deal with your own feelings. Get professional help if necessary. It's not up to the rest of the world to make you feel better.

Fair point. I was hurt and offended by a joke he made about women, in one of his previous specials. I fussed about it, and decided that I might not watch the next special. I certainly didn't try to have him "canceled." Anyway, I did watch the next special, because apparently, it was easy to survive being annoyed and mildly offended by a joke.

It's a great advice for an individual. But as a society, it's best to coexist if we share some level of mutual respect. Not using n word referring to black people, not using c word when referring to women and not making fun of trans people's genitals, is a pretty reasonable price to live in a harmonic society.

It's a two way street though. If you don't like what people on twitter or in comment sections say about his special, then stop reading it. You can't really criticize what the activists say without becoming a hypocrite. It's okay for people to criticize what other people say, period. That's free speech. When activists criticize Dave, no matter how reasonable their criticism that's "cancel culture" but when you criticize them that's somehow different? Makes no sense to me.

Sooo much, maybe even all comedy, is based on at least subtle mocking of a group, a person, a thing, a philosophy, messing with context. As long as it isn't promoting hate towards any of those things I'm so confused as to what the problem is. I watched the Dave Chappelle special just to see for myself and I laughed so hard, and didn't see anything at all offensive in what he said or how he said it. The over-sensitivity on the left is getting as bad as the break-with-all-reality on the right.

Did you notice how each & everyone of them is on the edge and walking on egg shells while approaching this subject? How Andrew kept a flat face through 2/3 of the segment as breaking a smile could land him in trouble. Clearly Bill, although not shy of expressing his opinion, seems to hold back some thoughts at 5:27. Is this the society we want to live in?

He's got good writers, but when he speaks for himself, oy, his lack of knowledge is just cringe. He's intelligent, but really poorly read, especially on international issues. I wish he'd stick to the script. Some of the just insane distortions on topics e.g. how Israel treats Palestinians is hard to fathom. There is nothing more dangerous than someone woefully uninformed who thinks they are the exact opposite. He's like a left version of a Trump, thinking he has an expertise that is so dreadfully lacking that I feel embarrassed for real for Maher quite often. When you get right down to it Maher is just another rich White guy who no matter the bit of lip service he might gives otherwise is a libertarian because he's a greedy prick who doesn't want to pay his share of taxes.

What I can say is that there are important conversations about modern day Liberalism that most late night show hosts refuse to have, or they just monologue on in a very biased way, but Bill manages to have the conversation while maintaining logical consistency.

@@Acoto I disagree with you on the aspect that this a logical conversation. It's just three guys agreeing that they like Dave Chappelle and generalizing most of there supposed opposition. I agree he talks the issue while other late night hosts stay away but he couldn't find one person to push his thinking. Now I agree with some points he makes here. This is all like minded opinions with no push it's boring. The gay marriage movement was relentlessly radical and wealthy sponsored and made the progress because of it.

I'm a Trans woman and I'm so disgusted at who's representing the Trans community in modern times. Some are, at best, cross dressers claiming to be Trans for some sort of acceptance and at worst those that self identify as Trans to gain access to spaces they have no business in. What about Dave's friend Daphne who was Trans getting harassed by the Trans community for sticking up for Dave after his Sticks and Stones special came out and he got backlash from it? They don't give a damn about Trans people. They want power.

A lot of people watched the special. Very few listened to what he had to say. Many didn't do either and just formed an opinion based on what's out in public. That's the issue here.

I see tweets that get reposted from Twitter and narratives that get spun from Corporate Media and I think "I feel ashamed and grieved these are my compatriots." @@jepulis6674 Just the presence of XX chromosomes - which fundamentally also means the presence of a womb and a vagina, and the potential to menstruate, give birth and go through menopause. Simple really. Biological sex is a key component of gender - but I agree most 'social norms' associated with sex and presented as gender norms can vary hugely because of culture. For example, a man who likes wearing skirts is still a man but in our culture skirts have become associated with females. Probably due to old age access issues, ie squatting to pee. That's not universal through. Women now wear trousers freely. In other cultures the social morms are a bit different. I don't understand how you people don't get the difference.

What is the actual difference between a trans person, and a person who identifies as a furry and goes to conventions and dresses up? Or someone who identifies as an elf and gets fake ears? I'm all for people being allowed to pretend they are something else... I'm not for them being able to put a gun to my head and force me to pretend too. Biology is a science right? An APA opinion poll is just an opinion poll.

Yang is friends with Chapelle, who endorsed his presidential campaign, so I'm not surprised that Yang didn't go full blast on Chapelle here. However, what Dave said in his special is completely contrary to Yang's normal takes on transphobia. Yang has always defended LGBT rights. He has also always defended comedians who put controversial takes in their comedy, such as the SNL guy who made racist comments about Yang. He meant exactly what he said: comedians are artists and their art should be treated differently than normal social commentary. That's all. Not a bad take but I do think it's fair to say the TERF joke wasn't even funny, it just seemed deliberately insulting.

I love Andrew Yang. I wish America didn't hate smart people so he could be our next president. Also, I'm a transwoman but, I have a sense of humor and I'm pro free speach. Dave Chappelle is wrong about how he views gender but, I would die to defend his right to make jokes about me. I mean, if people get some laughs out of my life I don't mind. Someone should get joy about me being born as man.

He made one statement in this video and I've personally said before I don't agree with everything Yang believes in but every time he speaks I think more and more he's the best option for America going forward. The guy can unite both sides of the aisle, too bad the system doesn't want that.

Arron, I ( like others) detected your observation with clapping out of queue. But I'm not surprised at all that societies (not just the US, albeit its the worst instance) are in this void. In fact, I've been predicting that Western societies would arrive at this juncture over 30 years ago - as the crowds at London's Speakers Corner and Sydney's Hyde Park plus other venues will verify. Essentially, it's NOT recognition, respect and justice a minority group seeks for past oppressions. What they want is retribution. Hence, there can never be consensus reached with the aggrieved. Alas, these processes that have flourished since the demise of George Floyd have unleashed an on steroids rendition of a Dante's Inferno. And it's all been fuelled by nuts who don't want reconciliation for ANY case of race, culture or gender related nuance.

Dave Chappelle has the wisdom of Solomon and that could be seen in his early work. He's a master at making a complex point in a simple, and sometimes very humorous way. He's been the G.O.A.T of stand-up, in my eyes for years, for that exact reason.

McWhorter reminds me a lot of Thomas Sowell. I think they're both skilled at rhetoric, but neither one of them has really convinced me of anything bc they only share a small part of the story (in the interviews I've watched of them both). McWhorter had an interview on Current Affairs channel that I'd recommend. That one actually did make me consider that cancel culture does actually exist (even if some people make it seem like a bigger issue than i think it is). The guy from Current Affairs adds context to McWhorter's claims of cancel culture (which honestly was more convincing than McWhorter's stance).

THE CLOSER was a love letter to a trans comedienne who opened for Chappelle; transphobia doesn't exist in it. As our democracy falls apart and our planet sizzles, this BS still occupies our dialogue. The woke gestapo should redirect efforts to things that are real and really matter. The world needs their help.

This seems like a weird comment in a bill maher video, considering the inordinate amount of time (including most New Rules segments the past year) he spends complaining about wokeness while democracy crumbles and the earth sizzles. I would say we have long since passed the point that people complaining abiut wokeness have become more of a nuisance than people being overly woke.

Right, and because you identify as "latino", I'm not morally or legally obligated to fill my home with latin culture or speak spanish if you visit. And if you pretended to indentify as "black" tomorrow and you're obviously not black, people have a right to look at you sideways. If I identify as an attack helicopter, you don't have to stock your bathroom with hellfire missiles just in case I need to 'reload'. Nobody cares.

“Latinx” will absolutely never catch on within (at least within the Latin Community) because it’s a term that in itself is trying to change a whole language. Spanish, like Italian, Romanian, French and other Romance languages differentiates genders unlike English. I have a feeling whoever “invented” the term probably isn’t Hispanic and if said person is, doesn’t speak a lick of Spanish.

Yeah. I can respect the desire for more inclusivity in language (provided that it's genuine, and not obnoxious virtue-signalling), but there's a point at which unwieldiness makes it impractical. "Latinx" just looks and feels artificial, like it's being imposed... which I suppose is exactly what's going on with it. The thing I don't really understand is, if people want to get away from the binary Latino/Latina distinction, why not just drop the suffix altogether and leave it at "Latin," like you just did when referring to "the Latin community"? Why doesn't that work better than an "X"?

@@frigginjerk works because it’s in English…. It’s virtually impossible to write that using the Romance languages. Had I typed it in Spanish I would have to have used Latino. Now for non-Spanish speaking Latinos, that’s a great solution! But in Spanish it’s impossible, and most Hispanics, even those that don’t speak Spanish want to somehow connect to their roots by learning even basic Spanish.

I just meant that if the grammatical gender inherent to Spanish bothers English speakers, they could just drop the "O" or "A" when they borrow Spanish vocabulary into English. At least in this particular case.
