Vintage Mego looks at Mego's greatest playset, The Batman Wayne Foundation, the crowning achievement of the World's Greatest Superheroes. This giant playset has a beautiful pedigree as it had been designed by Neal Adams and features many DC Comics easter eggs.

Toy-Ventures this week takes a detour from vintage and talks about this modern oddity. This three-pack of figures keeps popping up on eBay containing current versions of Big Jim, Pulsar and Major Matt Mason on Secret Wars bodies. Three characters I'd welcome back to the toy shelves with open arms, but what exactly is this?
Our latest book "Knock-Offs: Totally Unauthorized Action Figures" is available at the PlaidStallions shop, more info here:

I WISH, OH DO I WISH I would have kept my old toys. Many were given away. My biggest and worst loss was my complete 1978 Star Wars figure set. The Sears Cantina playset, the variant figures I had. The Jawa with the plastic cape. The Snaggletooth figure with the Blue suit, the taller and shorter versions of Snaggletooth. The Han Solo with the big head. The Luke Skywalker with the "roto-scope" lightsaber. Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi. So many of them. I literally had those figures cases that held your figures and you could flip over and use as a stand. Pegs were on the back of the figure holder. I had at least 6 or 7 maybe 8 of those full. And they were given away. A relative who got some decided that she and her dog could bite off the heads of some of them. Ugh! My Death Star playset, no idea where that ended up. This hurts!

This is one of the reasons why I feel the toys of the 70s ruled. Wayne Foundation, along with the batcave, the fortress from the Planet of the Apes among other playsets, allowed us to use our imagination. Basically hands on toys were King, in my opinion. Thank you for another great trip through memory lane.

It's odd that I never even saw a Wayne Foundation back then, considering that I received Mego toys for almost every Christmas of the 1970's. In Christmas 1974 I received mostly Mego Batman toys. In an old home movie I can see my brother, my sister, and myself playing with all the Batman figures and the Batmobile, and paying little attention to the other things we got. Today I have every item Mego made for the 8 inch Batman line- except for the Wayne Foundation. But I do have the computer console, and it displays nicely with the Jokermobile and Batlab.

I would of killed for a Mego Batmite back then. The Wayne Foundation looks like a lot of cardboard so it would of been off-limits to me as a kid (can't remember if I was even aware of it). My parents were against toys with a lot of cardboard. Instead of the Mego Batcave I had a wooden homemade one my father built. The anti-cardboard stance in my house almost cost me the Death Star, the Batcave was slated for a remodel into the Death Star but they recanted.

In retrospect knowing how plastics are destroying our planet, do you think your parent's ever realized how silly their anit-cardboard stance was? If only everything that we use plastic for was substituted with cardboard we would have a much more sustainable planet right now.

Oh if I had half of the toys I had then, now, oh man that hurts! Mego Superheroes were my top toys in the early to mid 70's. So many epic figures to have. Even S.W.A.T. had a run.

I've never seen this before. The things still left to discover in the classic toy world! I wonder how expensive this playset was to manufacture ... it's mostly cardstock and mostly identical plastic struts. I'd have gone half mad yearning for this. It's big enough to stand in for all kinds of structures, not just those featured on the backgrounds. I'll no doubt watch this video a number of times and it's excellent quality even on a large TV screen. Thanks again for making it.

Hey Brick, Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for making this video. I grew up in the 90's obsessed with batman and when I got a little older I found photos of the Wayne Foundation play set but had no way of obtaining one. I have searched for years trying to find one in the wild but have never seen it in person. Your video shows a lot of detail and insight into this mystical toy that I still plan on adding to my collection someday! This make me want to redouble my efforts to track one of these down for sure. Keep up the good work, Would love to see some more obscure play sets in the future!

I never had the Wayne Foundation. The only time that I ever saw one was back in 1978 or 1979. I was over a friend's house and he had one. I was amazed by the grand structure. He also had Megos that I never saw before like Isis, Conan, and the second wave of Star Trek Aliens. The Wayne Foundation was truly the crown jewel of the WGSH line, if not the entire line of Mego 8" action figures.

I remember circling this in the Montgomery Ward catalog at least two years running up to Christmas. I loved the looks of it (and love it even more after your detailed video!). Unfortunately for me I found out a couple of years ago that mom bought most of my toys for Christmas in the summer at sidewalk sales and clearance sales. So what I ended up getting was often what I had wanted the previous Christmas! To make matters worse, she shared my Christmas wish list with her sister and so my cousin would get exactly what I had wished for the current year while I got last year's stuff. Suffice it to say, I was not happy after our annual family Christmas visit to his house. Lucky for me he didn't get Batman Wayne Foundation either!

This was a great piece I had it as a kid it was actually somehow mail ordered and sent to my moms place of work I carried it home on my back riding a bicycle. It was very heavy. Kind of just like Mego I was coming to the end of my run being able to play with action figures I Had not outgrown them but my tiny neighborhood moved away and my other friends were now getting into sports, Boy Scouts and motorcycles. My expectations however were over the top, I anticipated setting this up and having some of the greatest adventures there ever were Batman being my favorite hero and I was following along with the new adventures of Batman so this to me was Perfect. So here comes the reality… Maybe it had something to do with I didn't have anyone to really share The adventure at that time having said that I found it to be lacking except for the elevator which was fun but there's only so much you can do and Batman's house with his own elevator now too much can go down because nobodys supposed to know that it exists. Maybe I could pretend it was a hotel or a building somewhere beyond that would've been one thing. Also as a kid I found the hideaway bookcase survey goofy for lack of a better term first of all if the top floor that little single spot was supposed to represent the penthouse and all of this was supposed to be underground or whatever it was what's the point of having a hideaway bookcase if nobody is supposed to be there to begin with… Anyway lol "those were the days… And you know who you are then..."

I'm seeing lots of comments about cardboard. But to my eyes it looks like chipboard which is wood. Cheap wood, but wood nonetheless. Had a chess board of that and some playschool toy parts used it. It has a lot more durablity and can be wiped clean easily. Also the support pillars, elevator, clips, all plastic. As well as the chairs and simaler accessories.

I had this. I got it for Christmas 1977 and maybe my opinion of it has to do with the fact that I came down with very bad case of the flu within days. But this toy was one of the biggest disappointments of my childhood. This was not physically designed well. Once you built it and put in the elevator----without fail---when you used the elevator, at least one of the background cards would fall completely off. The elevator was not designed well and didn't move from floor to floor without a lot of trouble. It wouldn't slide very well, so it would get stuck and you had to yank that string to get it to move. And when you did, that's when it would literally fall apart before your eyes.

Unfortunately I never had any Mego Batman figures as a kid, but watching these videos sure makes me wish I had been fortunate enough to own this playset. What a work of toy art, such brilliant attention to details, with loads of little nods to the Batlore as well to look out for. This perfectly sums up why I loved 70's / 80's toy lines; Such attention to details, and toy adverts that really drew the viewer in well (yes, I loved the Batman toy adverts included here too - just fabulous. Each Autumn / Winter / Fall Season back then was always worth it just to see the various new toy adverts each year in the run up to Christmas - wonderful times, great memories!). Adjusted to today's prices that would have been around 70 dollars for a pile of cardboard. I understand capitalizing on the Batman culture because of the tv series, but its too bad that Mego didnt make this set for their Mego Fantastic Four line as this set could have been a wonderful headquarters for the Baxter Building seen in Marvel Comics as the four top floors served as the FF headquarters. Just think of all the wondeerful drawings that could have been done of Reed Richards scientific equiptment on the backwalls and the elevtor would have worked nicely too, plus they could have made some vehicles for the FF such as the Fantastic Car.
