I saw this on opening night one of the worst reductions I love starlight express IX musical Theatre person the costumes are absolutely appalling. They look like Power Rangers. Most people that were clapping were people that knew people from the show and cast members two people walked out on the first act, the new songs and how they’ve changed greaseball is awful. I’m trying to get a refund for my ticket because I paid 150 pounds and it was supposed to move the seats like Germany they don’t I would not recommend a show to anyone unfortunately and I used to love starlight express it’s very sad and I don’t think it’s going to work at all.

No wonder they are going so slowly. I was soooo looking forward to a modern version with technology, etc. Not a good first view.

This is just my interpretation but it feels like a live action cartoon concept where the Starlight Express plays more into the furturistic themes the name suggests. Literal space trains instead of a traditional classic toy train set. The costumes feel very much like a lot of contemporary toys in terms of colour and style. Like imagine a cartoon about space trains that have AI and these humanoids are the self-expressed image of each train's personality. The kid is playing with action figures or dolls instead of realistic toy trains. This is just my own idea. They very much make me think of cartoons like Transformers or Steven Universe or even Monster High dolls with nods to a lot of 80s animated series too. Of course this isn't gonna please everyone. But I kinda see where the are coming from with this version.

@@Simulacra719 Hi. Thanks for reading! I am conflicted about this production because I still find these new costumes enjoyable for what they are rather than what they aren't! I think it's more likely the director of the show had a specific vision and Gabriela Slade was chosen as costume designer as her recent work on Six showed she has the relevant experience and ability in creating costumes with certain elements in build, shape and materials that were in the vein of what they hoped to achieve with this production. The same can be said why they chose the same production designer from the Back to the Future musical. There were elements and ideas in that production (the 1950's and 1980's motifs, the neon and tech themes, the elements of movement and speed in terms of vehicles) that made them the right person for this job, in terms of matching the director's ideas. I totally understand certain fans mourning the move away from John Napier's designs. I personally miss when Cats had stylistically different costumes in different parts of the world, instead of Really Useful Group forcing everyone to basically replicate the Cats UK video production. But that's a discussion for another place haha.

The vocals were very weak and every character sounded the same. There was no dynamic in the range of voices. Poppas songs especially were disappointing. It really needed that gravelly tone to cut through. When I saw the unstaged London workshop version a few years back, Mica Paris played Momma and I knew that unless they found a voice like hers, a female in the role just wouldn't work. Everyone is looking for their own identity these days(rightfully so) and Starlight Express all of a sudden takes that away from these characters who weren´t that much fleshed out to begin with but now they all look the same. There is no wow effect that dazzles the audience. It is perhaps the worst revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber in years: no soul, no truly innovative proposals and with changes in the gender identity of the characters who we no longer know if they are asexual trains, polyamorous or simply robotic garbage. The costumes are so poor and in very bad taste that it makes them look like everything but trains: coffee makers, gadgets, Power Rangers. This musical is a tremendous mess and I see no possibility of repair. It is a pale and deceitful revival that is shaping up to be a disaster without composure and a cold and silly show about to crash resoundingly towards a resounding failure.

I know tons of people don't really like this new production, and I can understand why. The new costumes, cast, etc are unlike anything before it. With that in mind, I actually really like what I'm seeing so far. Sure, the costumes are very different, but this show is a non-replica (think of the 1997 on-ice production). They're going for a more space-like approach with the show given the control's room set piece. Either way, though I think most of them a very cool looking (GB's, Electra's, and Rusty's in particular). The choreography is a bit off in certain places but let's be fair here, this is the first of many more shows in the future. Given some time a lot of the movements will feel more natural and closer to what was used once the actors/actresses get more adjusted to their roles. IMO, I think this is a pretty nice production from what I've seen online so far, and I think should be given a chance. With that said if you don't like it that's perfectly fine and again I get why this is not for everyone. However, I am very looking forward to what's to come with this production and cast!

@@thecentralfloridarailroader oh they knew what they were doing by being deliberately vague with the marketing. Had they been honest about what they were planning to do, they knew they wouldn’t have sold as many tickets. I certainly wouldn’t have purchased tickets. No, the financing of this production relied on mass advance ticket sales and they knew they’d get it if they teased a big return of the show as long-time fans were desperate to see it again in a format similar to the Apollo days after having 22 years of pared-down touring versions or only being able to see it in German. So yes, I’d call that very deceitful marketing and taking advantage of loyal fans by exploiting their nostalgia for the show. And charging extortionate ticket prices for seats that were supposed to move and then not delivering moving seats is actually false advertising, so partial refunds should be offered for those tickets if you’re not getting a service you’ve actually paid for.

@@Simulacra719 I certainly see what you mean. They should have done further advertising of the costume designs and told fans early on about the big changes coming the show more directly. As for the moving seats thing, I (and many others) wasn't 100% sure if they meant a giant seat moving around set itself, or just chair's that swivel like in Germany so that's really up to your own definition of the term. Again, I really don't think it was their intention to lead people on, the advertising always to me, came across as not the same show, but the elements that made it unique and fun and bringing that into the next generation. Should they be honest and clear about what's new with the show before booking? Yes, as longtime fans were unsure if this was going to be a straight English translation of the 2018 German production or say a return to the original 1984 or 1992 London show. Again, though that's just more so my own opinion. Neither of us can know for certain about their intentional, and unless some leaked document or something gives us more concrete proof of ill intentions, I'll just live by the old rule of "Innocent until proven guilty". Though I do respect your thoughts and appreciate you are sharing your own perspective.

Shame on everyone posting negative comments. This is the first PREVIEW from a completely revamped version being performed by actors who for many this is their first professional debut. Give them time to grow into the roles! They are the ones who will be reading these comments wanting to see what people think. If you hate the changes or material, fine, but go after Andrew Lloyd Webber for that. As for singing and acting choices, there is time now for things to be refined and rehearsed even more, and despite some hiccups the cast have brought so much energy as you can clearly see here. If you care about the show's longevity then show some encouragement and support!

I am from Germany, Bochum, and I am shocked. What's that? Starlight Express? No. Definitly not. Andrew L. Webber killed the Starlight Express in a theatre...live and in front of everybody. Shame on you, Mr. Webber! I'm seriously so incredibly sorry that after so many years of waiting for a comeback, you're seeing such an absolutely bad and embarrassing production in London. England doesn't deserve that. Germany feels for you. 🥀🪦🔚 🎼🚂🎶

I’ve supported this show for 32 years (and been to Bochum 😘) and this is how long-time fans are rewarded?! We deserved better than to have the show we loved gutted before our very eyes…and charged extortionate prices for the privilege to witness it 😡 We bought tickets on good faith that we were going to see Starlight. This is not Starlight. This is bull 💩.

I went today and apart from a few sound mixing errors (mostly when it comes to Electra) it works as it's own show. It doesn't compare to the apollo version and everyone was Definitely decieved by the advertising of how the staging and seating was going to work (me suspects money issues came into play here). As the show continues I suspect it will only get better. Having a female lead for Greaseball works for me as she can play it more feline like (prowling along strutting her stuff). I give it a 6.5-7/10. Hopefully when finance and time allows I'll get back in to see it again and look for improvements. Also the new song in act 1 is good (wonder who wrote it as it seems to good to be an Andrew Lloyd Webber song 🤣)

I'm talking to everyone who writes negatively...no matter how bad it seems, the actors put a lot of effort into it and that should at least be appreciated...I'm quite fascinated by Electra and I don't care that Greaseball is female...the music sounds nice, the dancing and the presence is also strong and the costumes are also bearable, the main thing is that there is a mom...it's an English variation of Starlight Express (of course it's different) but to talk so much and so intensely negatively about it...does that have to be😕

  • @Baconlettucetomatoe

“It’s an English variation of starlight express” - starlight express IS originally an English show from London’s west end . If anything, this English version should be closest to the original seeing as London is so significant to starlight express. I do also feel sympathetic to the cast because it’s not their fault they were directed so badly but all this negativity is valid because the show was truly terrible
