Episode 136
Mega Man 6 was the last entry of the series on the NES, and while this sequel doesn't do much in the way of innovation, it's extremely well polished! This time, two of the bosses were designed by American fans - a first for the series!
So why did publisher Capcom decide NOT to publish the game in North America, and how did we end up getting it anyways? In today's episode we'll find out, and we'll also learn:
* The best way to beat EVERY STAGE!
* HIDDEN ITEMS - Where to find the ENERGY BALANCER, and all FOUR BEAT PARTS!
* A SECRET GLITCH that can skip two (or more) entire stages!
* BRANCHING PATHS - Which way is the best?
* DETAILED MAPS for every area!
* The best way to defeat EVERY BOSS (with or without boss weapons), even DR. WILY HIMSELF... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

This game almost feels like a blaze of glory for the NES. I had a SNES already when this came out, but I still played NES games. Of course, I played them less and less as time went on and I got the new releases coming out on SNES, but this game made me hook my NES to the TV for the first time in a long time play it for hours a day, just like I had in the late '80s. It was a fitting end to an era of video game history.

In the early generations of consoles, there was definitely a big upside to sticking around for the last bits of the previous generation once the new one came out. In the NES/SNES days, you definitely saw developers push the old consoles to their absolute limits, while they were still learning how to make the new stuff work. Kirby's Adventure, Mega Man 4-6, Ninja Gaiden 3, just to name a few. Sadly, it's not a phenomenon you see much of anymore. Most games are developed with PCs in mind, which are usually top of the tech tree now.

  • @wolffiegaming

It's new... but... it's still just a rush adapter. The flying form is a variation on the jet. the power form i don't think has any variance, but it's pretty limited use logistically. That plus the story is the worst one lol, and the game play is by far the easiest.

The Ben K is called that because of the Japanese legend of a warrior monk called Benkei. The legend says that Benkei was on a quest to obtain 1,000 swords from samurai in Kyoto through duels. A similar character shows up in Okami, though that character's obsession has to do with fishing, not swords.

People have gotten too obsessed with the "bring something new to the table" mentality and it's bs. You know how I know it's bs? Because people still asking for HL3 and telling Valve to stop waiting for the latest and greatest technical revolution. And how many of us want MegaMan Legends 3 even if it plays basically the same as 1&2 but with nicer graphics? There's nothing wrong with wanting something different or new in a sequel game but I think it's absurd to think that devs should always be pushing to bring something new in. Especially if you are finding yourself more invested in the story than gameplay

Im playing through this now, and using this video to help with boss level order. I'm trying to play first and check the video later. I'm at the Mr X stages now, and i have to say that having previously beaten 1-5, this may be my favourite yet. Its so well balanced, has numerous strategies, and encourages the use of boss weapons during the levels in a way i hadn't seen before. Thank you for doing this video, i have enjoyed the series so far, and this is a great way to end it.

38:38 there's interesting behind this enemy. Ben-K is named after classical Japanese warrior monk Saito Benkei. The backpack full of weapons on the robot is like the many weapons Benkei himself carried in his combat career. Seven weapons in total, all at once. He's the guy who basically went to the armory and when the quartermaster asked "How many weapons will you need today?" He said "Yes." 😀

Mega Man 6 will always be one of my favorite Mega Man games despite it not being as original as the early entries. It’s a fine game, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. You can actually beat all of the robot masters with the mega buster, even though Centaur Man could be tricky. That’s why I always save him for last. And the music rocks! Whenever I hear the start of Yamato Man’s music, I always have the urge to sing “Go, Go Power Rangers!”

Note about Eddie: You can get by him before he tosses the power-up and go to the exit ladder. That way you can keep respawning him and he'll instantly be in place to toss the new power-up (this applies to every MM game he shows up)

Dr. Wily is so proficient at making robots, we know he can even make robots that look like himself. He did this once in Mega Man 3... perhaps even twice given that he gets crushed by a falling block at the very end of that game, yet mysteriously survived without any issue. So, maybe even if there doesn't seem to be much going on with this story, there's More Than Meets the Eye (bad robot/Transformer reference) here. :) What I think happened was that Dr. Wily was also a robot in this version, and they did nothing more than imprison that robot at the end of the game, not the real Dr. Wily. Even the Dr. Wily that posed as Mr. X was a robot. The robot Mr. X was all part of a sophisticated plan by Dr. Wily to replace the formerly defeated Syndicate boss from the Streets of Rage series who was defeated at the conclusion of Streets of Rage 2. Thus Mr. X / Dr. Wily founded RoboCy Corporation leading into everything that happened in Streets of Rage 3. Okay, that's probably not what happened... 😆 but on the other hand, is it a mere coincidence that both of those games were released within a few months of each other in 1993-1994? 🤔

I’ve been waiting for this one since the 5th part dropped! By now, I managed to beat it myself (as well as 7 and X1+2), but I always come back every once in a while to this particular series to watch your videos. Always so entertaining and fun, no matter how many times I rewatch them. Happy to add another one to the playlist! Excited for the next one already. Will you go to X1 or 7? Going by release date? All I know is the wait is worth it!

Brilliant video as always. Loved it. Bird on bird violence made me lose it. Good stuff I assume the next megaman vid will be tougher to do, since those get more complex (like different stage looks depending on which bosses you fight first)

I'm glad you finally got this one done! My 2nd favorite of the NES six games (2 is always first). Great soundtrack (2 and 5 are better). Nice selection of robot masters. What's annoying to me is that the best weapon takes exactly 7 hits every time. There isn't an instance where a weapon is just THAT effective to defeat its target in like 3 or 4. Gone are the days of Bubble Lead wiping out Heat Man in 3 hits. I once did a test like you where I tried all weapons out and came to the same conclusions. I will admit that I had no idea how useful the Power Adapter was against the X and Wily stage bosses. I did see a clip on Facebook of someone using it against one of them. I want to say it was the big swinging ball. I hope you'll consider going forward with 7+ at some point.

I've been waiting for this one to come out... Sure, I could have joined the Patreon for UCBVG, but I believe that good things come to those who wait, and thus I waited patiently for MM6 to make the list. Now to wait for MM7 and the first three MMX games...

I must say, I am enjoying the creative uses that you are finding for all of the game's special weapons! I consider MM6 to have one of the weaker sets of special weapons, so this is cool to see!

Might as well comment on a comment in the YamatoMan section: The Benkei (Ben-K?) enemy is named for a famous Japanese warrior back around the mid-12th century who had a genre-defining last stand while holding a bridge against a small army out to get his master. He held that bridge till the bitter end, making sure that the enemy paid with many more lives than his own. This is one of those famous historical events that Japanese media loves to reference. So those Ben-K robots are made in his metallic image, barring the way to all invaders.

Some clarifications about my Knight Man entry. Capcom did misspelled my name in the game, though I blame my lousy handwriting at the time; I never could quite write in cursive... I almost never got my prize because similarly, they misspelled the name of the street I lived on. Sadly, I never got to play Mega Man VI as at the time, all the video game renting places in my small town had exclusively switched to SNES games. Then when I moves later, well, life happened... Finally, it was refreshing to see my original entry again. I did remembered the crest of spikes on the head, the helmet-shaped head, and the cross on the chest, but I had forgotten I went with a black, grey, and red color scheme.
