Mega Train Cuts Through Mexican Jungle But Could Boost Tourism | True Cost | Insider Business

Mexico is rushing to complete a new train line around the Yucatán Peninsula, linking tourist resorts with cities and famous Maya sites. But large areas of tropical forest have been cut down and activists say a unique network of sinkholes called cenotes are also at risk. What price is Mexico willing to pay for progress?

Exacto.

The people who live in the proposed train route were consulted before the project and overwhelmingly voted in favor of the train. Environmental impact and mitigation studies were also done a year before the start of construction. Then came along US funded NGO’s to derail the project using the environment as their cover. These same “environmentalists” didn’t protest when European and US hotels were propped up around the Riviera Maya and surrounding jungles without any regulations. I despise when developed countries act high and mighty as if their highways and other necessary infrastructure for connectivity didn’t affect their environment. They just want to keep us underdeveloped. 💯

I think that’s an overwhelming trust on a government. Think we need to be open to both arguments. In Mexico, most if not all times, growth and profit is only for those in positions of power. Only time will tell. In hope that it does benefit the people and the country as a whole.

"Growing" like this in 2023 is not actually growing.. This "erect a bunch of 'MODERN' structures" mentality isn't modernity any more. Look at China -destroying their ecosystem to build some ugly concrete roach motels for people to live in, and now they're finding they've got a massive pollution problem - and rapidly declining birth rate, because surprise surprise once people "modernize" by moving to the big city - they want less children. This idea of "modernization" through destructive industrialization doesn't work. It will increase global warming which sucks for Mexico, because it's already unbearably hot in many places.

Nope, this is just about ego and not about tourism. There was no need to build such a thing. Many studies were done decades before for passenger trains. They only found that the only section profitable was the Cancun to Tulum section but warned that the environment cost was going to be huge. When the Lopez run for the presidency, he promised to do a rail loop called "tren Maya" in the Yucatan Peninsula. Conveniently, this train is connected to Lopez's state (Tabasco) and very close to his personal property. There is a law that says that for any government project has to show that it's going to be profitable in order to go ahead but several studies showed that this project as a whole is not profitable. Not to mention that the huge environmental damage. There were many law sues and most ended up in the supreme court because the supreme court was going to against the project, Lopez then declared the project a National Security project. So the sues can't get to the court until someone challenges the National security denomination before the courts. The opposition is doing that but the Supreme Court is busy with many unconstitutional laws that Lopez has instructed through his zoombies in the congress and senate to pass. This is about the stubbornness of the Lopez presidency.

Funny how the environmentalist never said anything regarding all the hotels in Cancun, Tulum etc. A train is a lot more ecological than roads as it minimizes forest destruction and eliminates CO2 emissions so stop making it seem like its the worst idea. This is the best possible outcome as the damage can be controlled and trees can be replanted while still bringing progress to the native people and prevent them from emigrating. I can’t wait for it to be done and go contribute to their local economy. Don’t act like you’ve never been on vacation to a nice beach? Again, it appears like the government understands the importance of being ecological friendly and they are trying to be extremely careful to not have a negative impact while still moving forward with development for the local people. The guy who supposedly quit his job is not native to that area, he is already used to the benefits of development and has the luxury to supposedly “quit” his job to go “defend” the ecosystems but the locals hardly have any jobs, running water or other modern services. So easy to complain about development when you are an outsider and you don’t have to live in precarious situations. Let the local people decide, like they already have and let them live in their homeland and still enjoy a decent life! All the corporate media complains about immigration but they also want to keep people enslaved to poverty unless is the rich taking advantage and exploiting their resources!

People could have easily made the same argument against roads being built. Trains actually are a more efficient infrastructure for distribution and transportation. I took a trip in 2021 that encompassed the entire run of the Tren Maya but it was by car. Cancun - Tulum- Bacalar- Xpujil - Calakmul - Escarcega - Palenque - Campeche - Merida- Valladolid - Cancun What was my carbon footprint from that trip? How much risk did I take by using a car which can be stolen, crashed, break-downs, insurance, etc.? Let the tourists pay for the infrastructure that benefits the citizens of the area it's built in. And a lot of new national treasures are being unearthed and preserved thanks to the Tren Maya.

Most people against this project were actually on favor of it because the proposed route was completely different; it was to follow an existing road, limiting ecological damage to a minimum. But after creating the path for it and placing foundations the Government realized it was going to be way out of budget, so they went for the easiest solution; cut a straight line across jungle and over fragile limestone caves, nothing will go wrong for sure. That's what made a lot of people oppose the project, the lies. And when people complained about it the President said "Oh, now it turns out everybody is an ecologist" in a mocking tone. And also he declared the project "Of National Interest" meaning the Courts can't halt construction and citizen can't request detailed expenses sheets. So it is a pretty grey project, corrupt if you want to keep it hidden from prying eyes.

Repeat after me: the train was not built on virgin forest, but on tracks abandoned for forty years. The roads existed for more than 70 years and what was done was to take advantage of what already existed. To say anything else is to lie. It was built with the agreement of the native peoples and other inhabitants precisely to avoid the destruction of the jungle. Leaving these people in misery and telling them to take care of the jungle is what paper ecologists have been doing. In the last five years in Mexico, more than 1,000 million endemic timber and fruit trees have been planted on the lands of poor farmers who are paid a daily wage to take care of the trees.

Maya train is great and has more pros than cons. There is no perfection. Nobody says a word of the ecosystems caused by countless of international huge luxury hotel resorts in Cancun Playa del Carmen and Tulum and Mayan Riviera

This is a high price to pay just to move tourists. Meanwhile Mexico’s existing railroads and ports need to be modernized. Growth for the sake of growth leads to collapse.

For every tree cut down another 100 are being planted so from a point of view no trees were cut. Unlike in other countries
