Mega Man 5 is mostly solid to me. Though some have complained the charge shot is overpowered, which means you don't really have to use your other weapons, even though most aren't worth using anyways. The game could be more difficult, but it's good for someone who is starting to get into Mega Man. I really like the detailed graphics too.

Despite the pretty lame boss weapons this is probably my favorite of the NES Mega Man games. I like the level designs, the graphics are great, the soundtrack is awesome even though it's more subdued than the previous games, and I feel like it offers just the right amount of challenge that makes it fun without making you want to pull your hair out.

I like that you give context to the judgment on Mega Man 5. Too many people dismiss the games after MM3, like "that's where they got bad." No, they never got *bad*, all the NES Mega Man games are excellent action-platforming games. They just lack some of the initial passion that MM2 and MM3 had.

Awesome video! Mega Man 4-6 rarely get talked about so this is a treat. You're right about the difficulty, Inafune actually explicitly made it easier for accessibility reasons so it's the easiest of the NES games.

It's true that some of the weapons in this game kinda suck. However, Mega Man 5 is also home to some of the series' best level designs. I routinely play this game just to experience the Napalm Man, Gravity Man, and Crystal Man stages again and again.

I will NEVER understand why so many people hate on Charge Kick. It gives you complete invulnerability to damage during the slide. It's super abusable in many situations. Most notably the boss in the Protofortress who can freeze you in place. If you Charge Kick into his freeze rings, he'll damage himself trying to jump on you. lol

Megaman 5 was the second game of the series I played (the first one being my first) but the first I actually played it a bit longer than 10 mins. And I have really fond memories of it, the graphics, sound and musics and level design were at that level of quality that it felt they were almost Snes games. I even remember feeling the main character sprite feeling a little outdated in comparisson of the whole graphic enviroment. ironically. And how Protoman was central to the story made him my favourite character of the franquise thanks to this game too.

The Power Stone (Stone Man's weapon) is one of the most aggravating weapons in the series. It is not as bad as Top Spin but it's surely in the bottom 5 weapons overall. It is slow, inaccurate, and if you misfire you have to wait until the small rocks disappear from the screen before firing again, which leaves you defenseless unless you switch weapons.

  • @andyanajonseph9399

After beating Mega Man 5 again... I agree the weapons mentioned suck ass, but there also some great weapons I never understand why people ignore. Stuff like gyro attack, which is great for dealing with enemies at different altitudes. Or the star crash being another great shield weapon. As for the difficulty it's why I consider it the best starting point to get into the series. While I still like 4 more I can definitely see why you like 5 more, both are high up there. Here's how I'd rank them, now keep in mind I like all of them except for 1. 6>4>5>3>2>1

I sometimes find it pretty fun to ask myself which stages that previous Mega Man bosses would appear on in these later Mega Man games if they appeared on "Doc stages", like in Mega Man 3. For example, I would probably put Air Man on Gyro Man's stage, and Bubble Man definitely belongs on Wave Man's stage, and Flash Man seems ideal for Crystal Man's stage.

I loved MM5 the most as a kid. Honestly couldn't have told you why. I liked the stuff with Rush and mayb ecause the backgrounds were prettier... maybe cause the boss weapons weren't good so I didn't have worry about wasting them.

My experience playing Mega Man V: - Enter Star Man's Stage - Kill meteors, 1/3 of them drop 1ups - Next section, turrets shoot 1ups at me instead of bullets - Hardhats are replaced by Eddy clones who all give me 1ups - Get to Star Man, 1ups rotate around him like a shield - Kill Star Man, explodes into 1ups and E-Tanks. - Suddenly ported to Dr. Wily. He's getting his ass kicked by a bird. Surrenders and gives me more 1ups.

The boss weapons definitely were the weak point of MM5, but the music, in my opinion, is some of the best in the series, and I felt the levels and bosses were pretty well-balanced overall. That, plus the various secret items you can find actually made this my favorite of the original Mega Man series. Maybe I appreciated it more *because* it was a little less difficult, or maybe I just liked the mini-story of Proto-man's evolving relationship with MM, but when I hear MM2 held up as the best of early Mega Man, I just don't see it. I remember one section in MM2 where I couldn't progress without expending a boss weapon, then dying and coming back, then using the same boss weapon again, and that broke suspension of disbelief for me. Technically, the original Mega Man is a robot, so losing lives is a meta concept for him anyway, but I just don't think you should ever be *required* to lose lives in games like this if you can avoid it, unless, of course, there's some in-story reason for it. Anyway, I'm probably one of only a few people who would care about that kind of thing in a game like Mega Man 2.

I agree about Stone Man's weapon being garbage, but this is one of my favorite Mega Man games on the NES. The nerfed difficulty does make it fun to play instead of frustrating; some of the earlier Mega Man games feel like self-hatred instead of entertainment.

  • @vagrantlibertine

I felt this game handled robot masters better than the fourth. One of the reasons this series declined so quickly is because Capcom demanded a new game every year after the unexpected success of Mega Man 2. Naturally when your team is learning new hardware and putting the brunt of their effort into the X series for SNES, you'll see some problems. Then there was the demand for making Mega Man portable, so they had to make Gameboy games as well. The first two Mega Man games for Gameboy were outsourced to other development teams, and it really shows. (Although the second Mega Man for Gameboy was still a great game.)

I differ greatly. The Charge Kick is useful as heck when you learn how to use it. It goes through a lot of enemies and normal enemy shots (without getting damaged), making some parts of the game more manageable. Stone Man weapon is horrible though.

  • @Poooll

Spark Shot from mm3 is by far the worst of the NES games. It does no damage, can only freeze 2 enemies at a time, you can’t switch weapons while enemies are frozen, it often lags the game, and has a useless and sometimes dangerous transfer mechanic when another enemy touches a frozen one. It may be decent against some bosses, but works as a slow firing buster and if you want to go down that route top spin can one shot the final form of the final boss. I agree that top spin and charge kick are bad (top spin worse imo) but they at least can kill enemies. Charge kick also has a lot of invulnerability frames that can be useful. Here’s some guys that tried to play the game with only spark shot and theyve done similar things with the other weapons. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q42LtdKsprLbhdI.html

I'm going to have to disagree. I think Mega Man 4 was a much better game. It had better robot masters, better power-ups, better levels, and a much better soundtrack. They also nerfed the mega buster in 5. Budget wise, it felt like a step down from the previous title. Not to say 5 didn't have its own merits. Some of the gimmick stages were fantastic: Gravity Man had an awesome stage; so did Wave Man. But the latter half of the game felt cobbled together, with uninspired bosses. Dark Man 1-4 are some of the laziest bosses in the series.

Wow, as a lifelong Mega man superfan you really hit it on the head with everything here. Great game, and one of the better Mega Man games overall with great aesthetics, fun level gimmicks and some cool new features like Beat and the objectively-best charged shot in the series... but with some missteps like, most likely THE worst subweapon selection. My gosh, at least 3 of them serve the exact same Bubble Lead-like anti-ground purpose (Water Wave, Charge Kick, Napalm Bomb), and Power Stone is IMO the single worst weapon in the whole series... but at least Gravity Hold is fun.

This one has to be my least favorite in the 10 numbered entries - aside from 8. It just feels so.... empty, and bland, with the exception of Gravity Man's stage.

It's always interesting to see the wide variety of opinions on this series. I thought 4 was much emptier and bland and 5 was a bit livelier.

The First game will always have the biggest empty feeling for me, but 2 isn't far off tbh. Livelihood isn't in its name (especially in some of the Wily stages)

This is one has the worst weapons, robot masters, and music in the entire series on the NES. Not a terrible game in general but a sub par mega man game to say the least. Great review.

Music, really? IMO Charge Man, Napalm Man, the Dark Man and Wily stages and final boss have some of the best themes in the series, and the rest are at least decent. But I guess it does have a different flavor than a lot of the games, every one of them had different composers after all.

Gravity Man's theme is pretty good as well. The only lacking theme I can think of is Star Man's theme, but he's just a lacking robot master to begin with.

I might be out of line here but MMV soundtrack was the weakest in the series. That was my biggest issue with this game. Which is too bad since the level design was fantastic.

How can you review a megaman game and not mention the music? Imo, mm4 had better music than 5 and maybe the best in the series. I think mm5 may have had the worst sound track in the series. Also, mm5 had easy boss stages and fights, but the castle stages were just as tough as any of the others in the series, imo
