Great content as always I have the new mux and fitted Berima diesels throttle controller it was under $300 . Honestly an excellent addition for towing much more responsive. And with a proper tune I have seen amazing fuel and power gains. Yes I understand you shouldn’t have to do this but it really changes the whole car

But on a serious note thank you Paul for providing us with a very comprehensive test, like I've seen other channels do this and the off-road test especially the off-road test, I've seen many Australian channels doing tests to find out the better off-road vehicle and they claim to have off-road experts that will tell us which car is better off-road but the don't even show the cars during the test they just show a 5 second video of the car and then the "off-road expert" comes and say why X car is better but we never see the car during the test some nonsense test that just shouldn't exist.

Great video thanks Paul. I have the V6 Ranger Wildtrak and have been towing a 3t caravan for several months (10,000kms) I blew a turbo (a bearing failure) after 1700kms. Ford NZ looked after us with not only fixing it quickly but paying for our accommodation while we waited for the repair. Still love the truck, great for towing. I get 16lt per 100km while hooked up. If I was to pick a SUV to fit into a budget it would be the Everest but if I had a larger budget it would have been the LC before watching this video, now it would be the defender. Great job.

Great review. Just wondering if you put the trailer dimensions on to the Defender 110 infotainment, it helps the suspension to adjust to your load for better towing. I've got the 110 P400 and I'm currently towing an off-road caravan with a DO35 Hitch with no wheel cover, so I don't have the issues you did. Plus, I travel solo, so the towing camera is perfect for hitching on. I get around 18-19 litres/100km on the open road. Would have loved to see the V8 110 out there again. Looking forward to the next reviews.

Enjoyable vid - and such detail and hard work! Not surprised the Defender won. I have a 2011 RR TDV8 which I use for towing my daughter's horsebox and our local AD offered me a Defender 110 with the V6 engine - like the one you tested - for a long weekend. The RR is a great tow car so I was a bit sceptical at how the drop in torque would work but I was very surprised at how well it performed. Yes, the Defender doesn't have the RR's road presence and doesn't make you feel as special when you're driving it but it's a very capable car and if I were replacing my RR I'd definitely consider it.

I once owned a VW Touareg V10 5ltr diesel which was excellent on the road & usless on the land. I also owned a couple of Subarus Forresters which were brilliant all round 2ltr diesels. I currently own a Skoda Enyaq IV80x which is a full electric & tows very well & stable with all that low down weight its very stable & has loads of torque. One of my interesting jobs was contract harvesting from Roma Qld to Horsham Vic. Our support vehicle was a Toyota LC Ute 4ltr 6cyl, but all this was back in '87. I'd love to tow the Dyna trailer with my Skoda, but we don't have any in Ireland.

Firstly, I'm surprised at the SAG factor, because it's a common feeling among Y62 owners that they NEED stiffer rated springs or airbags to tow a half decent load, yet in this test it performed very well in that respect. 2nd is that the Defender shocked me with its performance, and purchase price and drive satisfaction aside, I'd happily concede that it's a better tow vehicle. Very impressed.

@@dragonz_breath4072 what the hell you talking about I don't drive a y62 I drive a Toyota Tacoma TRD 4X4 off-road 6-speed manual... The diesel Hilux gets around 25-30 mpg my 🛻💨 gets 17-20 city-highway 18 combine! 8-10mpg better is way more + more than 2X the payload & I wouldn't doubt it if it did better off-road that's probably pretty close & I saw that the GR Hilux was just under $39,000 & that's pretty much what I paid for my truck the Hilux was $1,000 cheaper! My Tacoma is the basic 📦 doesn't have any of the 360° 📸 no sunroof no leather or heated 💺💺 I guess if it doesn't have all those goofy features that I probably wouldn't use that's less shit to break down the 🛣️ mine came with all-weather floor mats, side steps, 🛏️ lights, exhaust tip & mud flaps those are just small little additions & make the 🛻💨 look pretty clean & I added the MX4 aluminum tonneau cover & tinted the windows. So you don't know what's in the cab nor don't know what's in the 🛏️ the best thing of all I added the RCI steel transmission skid 🍽️ with 🐈 shields so none of the tweakers can get to my catalytic converters! It's just a mild setup with just a few personal mods that I wanted but I think the Tacoma is VERY beautiful (stock AF) does not need a lift maybe just go to a 265/75 16 10ply tire up from the 70 series tire gives it a 1-in bigger so then you're running on 32-in tires truck is good to go! The only lift I would ever do is the factory TRD lift because you start getting into some wild shit and I don't want my 🛻💨 fucked up. Most people drive their trucks on the street but set them up for off-road 🤔 seems pretty idiotic to me lol unless you're out there off-🛣️ all the time. Manual has some super long gear ratios maybe the throws are a little long but I'll tell you what it's an absolute flawless beautiful transmission I've driven every generation Civic Si all the way from 1999 1.6 VTEC up till the 2019 Civic SI 1.5 turbo! I would hit more grinds & miss shift in those civics then I would my Tacoma I only did one little grind in my Tacoma so far & that was because of me. Just an amazing 🛻💨 If you don't expect too much out of it you will be VERY happy. But if you expect it to be a 🌎 beater you will be disappointed, it's just an average old skool 🛻💨 that's perfect for the old skool men

I think people avoid the Defender not because it isn't good, but rather the reputation of the brand. When we looked at getting our car last year, Land Rover just didn't make the list based on brand reputation criteria (a few others in the same boat).

What a great comparison for us it is the best I have ever seen. I am primarily interested in fuel efficiency at constant load eg towing at highway conditions, so, If you were to do another test. I would like to see a test done with the dyno trailer at 3 different loads at 100 and 80 km/hr . and to record the fuel usage when towing your loaded trailer under real world conditions.

Amazing review. Some feedback but not for this video: really love the acceleration and speedo view in your normal reviews down the back straight of your test track. However, there are some reviews of late that have had it missing. Would really love to have that in all reviews as it is a really good way of comparing all the cars in terms of power and speed at the top end. Even the slower vehicles. Other than that, love this channel.

These 4 cly models especially, change up gears too early when towing. If worked manually I think most would have reached 100 if left in a lower gear and used a few more revs. Example, the MUX changed up about 700rpm below the redline and then fell into a power hole. Even a diesel needs to rev to get hp towing at speed and up hills.

I tow 2.8t with a Triton. The 8sp would be an advantage I think. Having said all that, power wise the Triton copes fine at typical NZ towing speeds of 90km/hr. It is working when you push it or there are steep hills. We tested the PS and disliked the soft suspension. Some better shocks I think would make a world of difference.

I've ordered a Pajero Sport GXL. Will not be towing a 2800kg van. I think the lesson for those vans that wobbled around and struggled with the heavy trailer, tow a lighter trailer or buy a heavier and more powerful, and thus more expensive towing vehicle. I have a folding Avan which will probably weigh about 1100 kg with some payload. It should perform better than the combo in the video.

The Lexus LX600 uses a full time 4WD system with a 40/60 rear split. So the side with the least traction spins more. It relies on a torsen LSD to control that. Also its exactly the same as the LC300. The difference is the squat

Very good testing you did. A test from say 60 to zero with un-braked trailer to see how good the car’s brakes are with an un-braked load pushing from behind. Although that test might be pushing the limits of safe testing, due to possible jack knifing.

Hi Great test and nice engineering approach. I have found it very difficult to find information such as the GVM, payload, GCM etc for many vehicles. It doesn't seem to be easily findable on the manufacturers' websites. Are you able to somehow advise the information for each of the 4WDs that you tested. This is an important safety issue, and I think the industry doesn't take it seriously.

As with Towing, Roof Racks are something that are often over loaded.
