The 50s were a golden age of TV when people were experimenting with a new medium. Steve Allen was one of the best. There were hours of classical music, too.. and don't forget the Ed Sullivan show.

There's a current war on western civilization right now. If this was brought back, you can be sure the people would not only be very different, but any of the previous ones you recognized would have their stories changed rather significantly.

Steve Allen did us all a great service by letting us hear from these greats of history. So cool to see them talk to and interact with one another. I remember watching this show on PBS when it was first aired and I was so impressed; what a great way to learn history!

I have commented before that this series was one of the rare oases in Newton Minow's "vast wasteland." Mr. Allen wrote the greatest portion of the scripts, so we actually see them interacting as Mr. Allen and the cast imagine they would have. I wonder how the spirits of the figures portrayed in these shows (in whatever afterlife they may be enjoying or enduring) would view the portrayals, how they are interacting among themselves and with the actors, what points of agreement or disagreement with the scripts might they want to expound upon?

In terms of promoting intelligent inquiry and contribution to twentieth century culture, who is more underappreciated than this man? And to think that he is the same fellow who elevated silliness to an artform...brilliant man.

Mr. Allen's brilliance lay not only in his organization of the content, but also in assembling the casts. I sometimes wonder whether Jayne Meadows was influential in this respect; she was no less remarkable a mind than Mr. Allen.

I'm going to reiterate what everyone else is....this show was brilliant, it taught you and entertained you at the same time. There is nothing like this now, but even fewer people know about the amazing legacy of historical figures, which is sad, but I still come back a re-watch these with relish. RIP Steve Allan and this wonderful show.....and to think, Steve, when he was younger, grew up in the depression and knew hunger, both physically and intellectually and that didn't hold him back. Oh, thanks for putting these on your channel to watch, J. Kam!

When other children were reading Dick and Jane books I was reading the classics as I was raised in an orphanage and books were my best friends. I adore public television and anything that makes me think. It's sad that most young and older people don't bother to read and use their cell phones and computers to play games and watch stupid videos. Such a waste.

I agree with all - a wonderful show. I remember being able to watch some of them when I was a young man, but I don't remember when they were telecast. Was it in the late 60's? If so, that would explain me only being able to see a few of them - I was in engineering school then, with no time for tv. Engineering, by the way, was a great Roman accomplishment. Their roads, water systems and sewer systems are still in use in many areas of Europe today.

REALLY and TRULY INVOLVE YOURSELF in this episode for even a 2nd or 3rd time! It is ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING how it speaks to our present-day... THIS is a NATIONAL TREASURE that needs to be revived for the perspective we have so tragically lost! THIS is what TV MIGHT HAVE BEEN in the service of humanity... Mr. Kam, do you have ANY idea whether the entire series still exists and whether it can be procured? Thank You for what is here!!!

@@edmundpower1250 All I've ever seen was an audio release of some episodes, not all of them. Last I heard, there was some legal issue with the Steve Allen people.

Sad that so many people today have no idea who these giants of history were.

"Great artists steal." I have stolen this brilliant idea and format from the late, great Steve Allen and have my university students replicate them using people associated with topics we're examining. Students must become experts in the character, biography, and thinking of the person they are assigned so that they can accurately answer questions and engage in debate with their fellow guests around the table. The rewards of this activity are too numerous to list here. I always explain who Steve Allen was and give him full credit for this genius idea.

Imagine the research he put into these scripts! Mr. Allen was a polymath and his works not only informed his audience, but provided us with substantial instruction in how to think.
