I'm no scientist, but the Fennec Fox sure does look and have similarities to a Chihuahua. Such as napping in the sun, going for long periods without water and being little stinkers, lol 🏜️🦊🧡

This is an example of convergent evolution! Convergent evolution occurs when two species face the same or similar pressures in their environment and as a result end up evolving similar features despite not actually being related. The fennec fox and the chihuahua are both adapted for desert environments, so they have similar features - large ears that help with thermoregulation, drought resistance/water retention, and crepuscular activity (tending to be more active at dawn and dusk, which is common for desert animals, as its hot during the day and cold at night). Some other examples of convergent evolution are leafless lizards and snakes, the streamlined body of puffins, penguins, dolphins, seals, fish, the now extinct ichthyosaur, etc, & the use of echolocation by cave-dwelling bats, cave swallows, and some insects. Hope this helped!

I had one of these - brought over from Algeria in 1974. He was a house pet, but I don't at all recommend them as such. He lasted for 13 years, Many stories. Any wanting details can reply to this.

Fennecus is a genus of dog native mostly to Africa, with three species found in Asia, there are only six extant species within this genus: the Bengal Fox (Fennecus bengalensis), the Blanford's Fox (Fennecus cana), the Ruppell's Fox (Fennecus rueppellii), the Fennec Fox (Fennecus zerda), the Pale Fox (Fennecus pallidus), and the Cape Fox (Fennecus chama).

I thought all "dogs" are domesticated dogs, created by humans. Since Fennecs evolved wild, how are they dogs? They are amazing, so well adapted to such a harsh environment.

Ehhh, it's a relatively loosely defined term. Per the wiki, canids are often generally referred to as dogs even enough that's not technically correct. Some canids are also straight up called dogs too (African wild dogs come to mind.) But I'd imagine the long and short of it is that "World's Smallest Canid" just wouldn't have the same oomph.

@@bemusedbandersnatch2069 Thanks for your reply! I'm sure somewhere they're in a species or other division separate from domesticated dogs. You are a Bandersnatch that I will not shun! 😊

@Bemused Bandersnatch, actually, it is technically correct, dogs and domestic dogs are not the same thing, a dog is any carnivoran that belongs to the family Canidae, therefore, wolves, jackals, foxes, and wild species with the word "dog" in their name are dogs, just like cats and domestic cats are not the same thing, a cat is any carnivoran that belongs to the family Felidae, therefore cheetahs, pumas, jaguarundis, leopards, lions, tigers, snow leopards, clouded leopards, jaguars, manuls, lynxes, servals, caracals, ocelots, margays, and many wild species with the word "cat" in their name are cats.

Watch the show, all dogs are from wild wolves/foxes and other varieties, bred into domesticity not born into it until we tamed them for long enough.

They are interchangeable. When most people refer to dogs, they mean domestic dogs, but the term ‘dog’ technically refers to all members of the canid family, including wolves, foxes, domestic dogs, jackals, coyotes, painted dogs, etc. Hoped this helped!
