As a former resident of Waco Texas and a descendant of a family with a long history of Naval service I’ve long admired Doris Miller’s heroism. His legacy deserves this honor. My grandfather was at Pearl Harbor on the California that day. So, I’ve always had a special interest in the events of December 7th.

Happy to see Miller so justifiably honored. Brown Water Navy Vietnam vet. My dad was aboard the USS Utah that day.

As a Texan, Navy Submariner veteran (Enlisted) and a native of Austin (TX), I am extremely proud that this man is receiving this great honor. My entire childhood was spent on Rosewood Park, playing basketball in Doris Miller Auditorium. I had respect for him even before I fully understood what he had sacrificed. My respect only deepened during my own Naval career. I'm prouder than ever to be a US Navy Veteran, great job Navy!

Doris Miller was the real deal. His bravery and actions on December 7th were above and beyond. If I were 18 again & USN, I would be proud to serve on a warship bearing his name.

He and Earnest Evans were the Navy real bad ass in that war. Of course Evans got the MOH (officer) and Miller did not. Fitting he got a carrier. The USS Earnest E Evans is a Arleigh Burke class DDG. The Pacific is real big and you do get thirsty. If you understand the source of the thirst. Oh & mess deck coffee sucks.

The TRUTH is Doris Miller got his medal for ONE reason, the color of his skin. After the attack there was massive pressure from the black press to give a black man a medal so they could have a hero at Pearl Harbor too. Miller didn't get awarded his medal for nearly 6 months after the attack as the Navy bowed to pressure from the black press and members of congress to award a medal to a black man. Since then the tales of what he did at Pearl Harbor have been WILDLY exaggerated to justify it. I have seen him credited with as many as three aircraft shot down, which ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about a .50 caliber machine gun knows that is totally BS. As a seventh generation Texan, I commend his heroism and a fellow Texan Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz from Fredericksburg Texas awarded him his Navy Cross, and I believe a destroyer was already named after him

Miller's heroism would've previously resulted in getting a destroyer named after him, and quite deservedly. Getting an honor normally reserved for historically significant political leaders is kind of a make-up call for the injustices of the past. Still, I'd rather they name a 13 billion dollar carrier, literally the centerpiece of an entire battlegroup, after a brave sailor than some dirtbag politician who hated the military.

Yes! USS MILLER DE/FF-1091. She was the first ship I reported to beginning a 20+yr career in the USS Navy. Homeported in Newport RI. Our reunion group is working (hopefully) to allow us that served on her to the Christening ceremony. Sadly, there aren’t to many of us left.

They say that the name was an appeasement tactic. But technically, look at the history of the man himself, he was merely a Cook aboard the Battleship West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor attack, he got the gravely wounded captain to a safer position and helped load the AA guns because that’s what African American sailors could do. But afterwards, he manned an AA Gun despite not being trained to man it and opened fire on the attacking Japanese planes. Miller was fueled with the desire to protect his fellow sailors and kept firing until the gun ran out of ammunition. He assisted in helping the surviving crew escape the sinking battleship and for his efforts - he was awarded the Navy Cross and some would hail him as the Hero of Pearl Harbor. Now for his name on a carrier was where Doris Miller’s journey ended. He was aboard the escort carrier, USS Liscome Bay during the raids on Makin Atoll when the ship was hit by torpedoes from a Japanese Submarine. The explosion from the torpedoes hitting the fuel storage had split the carrier in two, I believe. Doris Miller was listed as Killed In Action. That’s the real reason why the fourth Ford-Class Carrier is called Doris Miller. But there’s still the third carrier under construction - The USS Enterprise!

@@unclefart5527 Yes, the Knox-Class Destroyer Escort, USS Miller was named after him. Yes, the names of presidents were used for aircraft carriers. But there’s the John C. Stennis, the ship my brother served on, he was a politician, not a president. But when you think about Miller’s history, he earned the Navy Cross and was hailed as a hero - an example of sailors going above and beyond the call of duty. I believe that’s why he got his name on a destroyer escort and now - an Aircraft Carrier.

If this carrier even carries half this man’s bravery then the Russians are doomed! This is one man only and this carrier even with his death will bravely serve like Doris Miller with honor, I have. Some people have issues that the carrier was given the honor to be named after Doris Miller. Personally, I don’t really care what any of the Ford-class sister ships are named. As long as one of them is the Enterprise, which is under construction. The fleet should always have an Enterprise leafing the way.

CDR Ernest E. Evans is probably the most deserving sailor in history of having a carrier named after him, but they only named a destroyer after him. What he did at the battle off Samar in 1944 is possibly the most inspired combat leadership the US Navy has ever seen.

I have to disagree. Commander Evans is absolutely deserving of being honored by naming a ship for him, but that ship should always be a destroyer. Commander Evans was a destroyer man through and through. And there should ALWAYS be a USS Earnest Evans destroyer in the fleet. Carriers should be named for important events and concepts, such as Coral Sea, Midway, Yorktown, Independence, and of course, the proudest name in the history of the US Navy, ENTERPRISE.

At the time Black Sailors were NOT allowed to win the Medal of Honor! He was awarded the Navy Cross as the only medal which was a first for a Black American.

The Navy should follow the proud tradition of naming capital ships after presidents, military leaders or historic ships. The seaman in this case already has well deserved recognition and I am uncomfortable with the politics behind this decision.

Although are largest ship or aircraft carriers I always thought since these ships take so long to build and the names are for the most part that the rest of fleet war type ships should now start naming all other ships should start being named after meritorious medal service personal and save the carriers and super new type ships too and save Presidents names for our carriers only until all our names have been used up just due to how long and cost of each of these ships cost. If we name other ships already after.certain war heroes who pulled off some of our most spectacular missions undertaken that gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives should be on all other ships who deserve this distinction and place of honor. God Bless America and all these souls giving this honor to these ships that often last 25 to 30 years at least and then rename another ship after yet another hero.

Enough with the DEI talk , he was a sailor who went beyond his duties and fought to save his fellow sailors just like the hundreds of others there did the best they could under the situations they were facing.

NOTHING he did that day would be considered heroic if he was a white sailor. Go look at the awards certificates of the other sailors who were awarded the Navy Cross and you will see Doris Miller does not belong in that club. The closest one I could find comparable to what Miller did was Aviation Ordinance man John William Finn. Finn was off duty at the time and at home. He heard the attack started and jumped in his car and drove down to his duty station NAS Kaneohe. Finding a movable tripod platform used for gunnery training, Finn attached a .50 caliber machine gun and pushed the platform into an open area, from which he had a clear view of the attacking aircraft. He fired on the Japanese planes for the next two hours, even after being seriously wounded, until the attack had ended. In total, he received 21 distinct wounds, including a bullet through his right foot and an injury to his left shoulder, which caused him to lose feeling in his left arm. His actions earned him the first Medal of Honor to be awarded in World War II. Granted his medal was one notch higher than Millers but what Miller did does not compare in ANY way to what fin did.

Take Commander William Page Burford Captain of the USS Monaghan. During the sortie of the U.S.S. MONAGHAN from Pearl Harbor, a Japanese submarine was sighted in the harbor. Despite the severe enemy bombing and strafing at the time, Lieutenant Commander Burford, through skillful handling of his ship at high speed in the shoal water and at a bend in the channel, attacked and destroyed the submarine by ramming and with depth charges; and completed the sortie from the harbor in an outstanding manner. So this guy is one of the few Captains to get his ship underway during an attack, sank an enemy submarine in the harbor while being bombed and strafed and successfully made it out of the harbor and yet he was awarded the same medal as a guy who fired a .50 caliber machine gun. One of these things is not like the other!!! Oh yeah, how many ships has he had named after him? ZERO!!!!!!!

I will also point out that you should go on the internet and do a search for Navy cross winners at Pearl Harbor, you can't find ANYONE but Dorris Miller. You really have to search long and hard to find records of other sailors who were awarded the Navy Cross but Millers name is PLASTERED EVERYWHERE. It is a good example of revisionist history.

I love how people are saying carries are named after presidents, that only started after the USS Forrestal with that said you had the USS Roosevelt and USS John F Kennedy, before that most carriers names were Saratoga Enterprise coral sea so on. But the first nuclear carrier an one of kind USS Enterprise, and then the USS Nimitz class came out named for Admiral Nimitz. I think this new ships name is greater than some of the president like Ford he was a horrible president. Miller stepped up to protect his ship. 95% of the US president would be on their knees peeing them selfs.

I vote we name an aircraft carrier after another unsung hero of Dec. 7. 1941. USN Gunner Frank DuBosque , who manned the #3 5 inch gun turret of the USS St. Louis (CL-49) , sank the IJN type 6 midget submarine that had already fired a torpedo at the "Lucky Lou" and sank that sucker. The torpedo exploded harmlessly on a shoal and gave away the position of the midget type 6 IJN sub. It was later dredged up and pulled from inside the harbor with a 5' hole through ( the shell never detonated as the Gunners Mate failed to arm the shells detonator but down went the sub anyway ) it and Congressman Robert Andrews ( D-NJ) awarded him a medal many decades after the war. Frank was told that if asked, he shot a pilot whale as the USN needed to deny the success of those mini subs in gaining access to Pearl Harbor. The destroyer USS Monaghan (DD-354) also sank a submarine in Pearl Harbor that day via ramming and depth charges as well. Nothing about those mini sub sinkings is any Hollywood war movies either but the facts are documented for any and all REAL historians to confirm.

I believe the time has come to name a US Naval Ship to honor an indigenous First Nation Indian leader that honorably led his people during the European colonization of the continental territory now known as the United States. This would be right and just to acknowledge the indigenous peoples’ independent spirit and cultural heritage that is still practiced by all tribes in the United States. Our government has never honored a treaty with any of the tribes during colonization to the present day and if our government would do this it would help heal the years of mistrust and broken promises. There are so many great leaders from all the tribes that could be chosen for this honor if it were to happen. For the family and relatives of Doris Miller this is a great and noble honor to have the newest generation of the aircraft carrier named after him.

Sorry but Doris Miller had a ship already named after him. And there were many who made heroic sacrifices at Pearl Harbor. Not just Miller!

Doris Miller was a WW2 hero and A ship was already named for him and this will be TWO. Hero ADMIRALS have not had one so named nor all medal winners. This OBVIOUS skin game could have been avoided, if the navy deliberately wanted to name a ship for a black American, they could have named it the Frederick Douglass or even the Barack Obama or the Martin Luther King. Every Navy ship's crew included black sailors in WWII, but they were only allowed to serve as commissarymen or pharmacists' mates. Until the ship was in a gunfight, that is. Then everyone had a combat station. The black sailors were usually assigned to ready-ammunition squads, passing ammo to guns, or were corpsman's assistants, moving wounded sailors to aid stations. When the ship started taking hits, the color line was no longer observed and everybody did what they could. There was some racism on the ships, but much less of it after the explosions and fires. Racism? Notice that Doris's first assignment was an ammunition carrier, which is a powder keg the size of a large freighter. When a torpedo hits on of those, you can see the explosion from the moon. That's where the Navy generally sends guys they don't like.

We have many a good man thats called a hero and should be...naming her the DORIS MILLER is both just and honerable. Could we not have the US NAVY establish a list of" prospective ship Names? In this manner all of us could be given the opportunity to recommend those who so deservingly get recognized. I'll bet there will be a U.S. President present when the time comes for this carrier's Christening or active commissioning ceremoney, and that he will be toating along an (upgraded) present for Miller's relatives.

I was stationed at NAS Chase Field in Beevile Texas 1979-1982 our chow hall was named after Dorie Miller. I would be honored to come aboard. None of us really knew who he was till I read about him in World War II.

He had a DESTOYER named after him he should have had another DESTOYER named after him. NOT a CARRIER. Its was for POLITICAL REASONS. They could have named the ship after COLIN POWELL being he was the 1st Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and 1st Black Man named Secretary of State. Aircraft Carriers should be named after PRESIDENTS or ships of the REVOLUTION or WW2 or someone of like POWELL. Having another destoyer to be named after him would have been just fine.
