Meet the Quokkas

After a dare to get the ultimate Quokka selfie, I visited Rottnest Island in Western Australia to meet the cutest, friendliest photo bombers in the world.

Qokkas are adorable and very special. I am glad they are so highly protected that you are not allowed to touch them. When I read that French backpackers had set one on fire I was astonished how twisted you would have to be to do that. They should have been thrown in jail. I hope they were deported!

Our state government will sue their ass off and possibly jail time if they harm them, they're basically only found on Rottnest Island and a small patch of land in south Western Australia. Their have being a few instances but they are few and far between. We're very fond of our quokkas and the island is basically a safe haven with no predators so they are very trusting with humans.

To protect the quokkas and humans, you are allowed to take photos (from a reasonable distance) but under the Rottnest Island Authority Act, it is illegal to pet or feed Quokkas with fines of at least $150 given on the spot.

"Quokka Soccer" ?" Lighting a Quokka" ?? WTF ??!! - I curse those people who mistreated these gentle animals , to be born as a quokka and face all the hardships a quokka has to face in its life ! Why do some people behave like "terrorists" towards animals ?? SICK ! Such people are definitely not "human" by definition - only some monster in human skin...yuck !

Rest assured people - 'Quokka Soccer' was NEVER 'popular'. People joked about it, but in the many times I have been to 'Rotto' in the last 45 years, I have never observed it. Don't get me wrong, there were reports of people, usually drunks, abusing Quokkas, but if it had been an endemic practice, Quokka would not be so comfortable around humans. Also, just in case anyone is planning a trip to Rotto by ferry, hire your bike with the ferry company. They hand you a bike as you get off the ferry, and you return the bike when you return on the ferry. It saves you walking to and from the bike hire business. Also, I recommend catching the ferry from Barrack St Jetty in Perth, so you get a beautiful cruise down the Swan River to Fremantle then across to Rottnest Island. And do the Segway tour on the island. I did that recently after going to the island for years, and thought it was fabulous. I have done Segway tours in a number of places overseas. this was by far the best!

  • @EVALLOYD

Yes, they're cute, no doubt about that but I do feel uncomfortable nonetheless that these animals are a tourist attraction for in my opinion wildlife should be left alone. They are for the main part, I have read, nocturnal animals, so they fact that they are swarming about during the daytime may not be a good sign and proof not only that they are being fed by the tourists with food which may not be adapted to their diet for they are herbivorous but also that they have no fear for no natural predators on the island. If that is the case, won't there be a problem of overpopulation sometime in the future?
