My '71 Schwinn Sports Tourer has a cromo 4130 brazed frame and is light and has stood the test of time. Love steel bikes!

Such a wonderful clip. It may establish me as a tube number tragic, but I could listen to this bloke talk about the Reynolds tubes literally for hours. Love it.

I have a custom made Waterford Reynolds 853 with Chorus components and Hed wheels.Most of the components on this frame have been replaced over the 21 years of riding. I still come back after a ride smile and think I love this bike. I also have a Ridley carbon gravel bike that I’m very impressed with but I still like the Waterford for road riding.

I changed my cycling philosophy at the end of last summer as I realised I just wasn't enjoying it any more and was only banging in an occasional couple of rides a month. I also would look for any excuse not to get the bike dirty, rain, wind, slightly to cold, leaves on the road....! I then had an apifany after seeing an ageing guy dressed like 70s pro struggling through the drizzle on a Sunday afternoon while driving to a pub with the Mrs for lunch. About 40 minutes after arriving at the Pub and enjoying a Sunday roast in the warm with a pint the afore mentioned bearded explorer arrived for his well deserved roast, which I think he was going to enjoy more than any one else that afternoon! I in wonderment started a conversation with this intrepid cyclist who was soaked through and quite frankly the happiest individual in the establishment, he'd taken up mother nature's challenge and was winning and was awarding himself with lunch a pint that he'd earned simple as that! and didn’t give a jot about the weather to which he stated that only ice and snow stops him from this weekly endeavour.... I was hooked, I went home(after pudding of course) and put my plastic thorough bred up for sale and then proceeded to look for that one bike that ticked all the boxes, reynolds tubing, full mudguards, a leather saddle and the right colour of course! I found it and here I am nearly a year later...... I understand the statement "steel is real" it should be that steel has soul! She's my friend who has battled through the winter putting a couple of thousand miles in with me, never faltering, never failing, always willing to do battle with the elements, our reward now is that summer is nearly here.....! My wife sometimes catches me in the shed with a cuppa just keeping her company and has now come to terms that there is another in my life, and she doesn't mind "most of the time" she has become my friend and companion, not a soulless piece of plastic advertising how much money I've wasted..... Thank you Reynolds.....

@captain pugwash My remark was fairly succinct. A guy posting a heartfelt message regarding his cycling experience is to be welcomed, not dismissed as "Sad". Especially now. I acknowledge no "stupid remark", and where did I suggest that cycles were other than machines? I suggested that you empathise with someone sharing a cycling-lifestyle experience, given that you share this interest. I suggested that you are "Sad" to belittle that shared experience. There's nothing clever in dismissing a lengthy posting with a three-word put-down. It's rather pitiful. I suggested that you "Be Nice" If that's too sweet and simplistic, I could happily escalate it to "Don't be a Cunt!" Hope this clarifies. The last word is yours (Something tells me you might need it)

I've been riding a quad butted stainless Vaya Travel for about 6yrs now, amazing bike, and it still looks brand new. My friends that I tour with all bought standard steel frames at the same time, and they're now all showing their age. I wish more companies would do their offerings in stainless, it turns out almost as light as titanium

Especially when set up with a carbon fork and soft tires it basically is cheap titanium

Great video. I will enjoy my Reyolds 853 Genesis tomorrow on my Sunday 100km run. The smoothness comes from the choice of tyres, not the frame, it's an often-overlooked fact!

I have (has to think about this now) 8 Reynolds frame roadies. All Raleighs. From a 501 Quasar through to a 531C Panasonic Team Replica and a 653 Record Ace Moderne.

I've still got a Geoffrey Butler from 1984 made from 531 special light weight, has been over mont ventoux, the tourmalet, The Col de L'Iseran, The Galibier, The telegraph, The cormet de Roseland and many more on top of that I've been knocked off it twice and a friend road it flat out into an enormous pot hole, damaged the GP4 rim but the frame is still perfect. I tend to just use it when I take it abroad, cycling doesn't need to be expensive, the breakdown cost over many years means the best has cost very little as well as that I replaced the damaged GP4 wheel(s ) with a pair from a cycle jumble that I picked up for £10. Viva cycling, viva Reynolds tubing.

I have a couple of custom built hardtail MTB frames. Getting another one built by Curtis in the UK. Always loved the ride of Reynolds 853.

Iv got a old raleigh record sprint with 501 frame and it's really nice to ride feels like quality so can imagine what the others in the range feel like.

I have a Reynolds 631 frame. It rides like a dream.

Havinga reynolds 631 MTB and 853 MTB, one reynolds 708 classic road bike, one reynolds 731 road bike and a reynolds 753 road bike, I love reynolds.

1972 531 (every last inch of it) frame. Such a dream to ride!

I had a 753 - should I have sold it; ach, I needed the space at the time. 531C, if all you've ridden is an ordinary bike, is a thing of wonder. I was in Billy Bisland's bike shop in Glasgow in the (IIRC) early 90s and they had (I think) Raleigh frames made with Reynold's tubing, with mad paint jobs and with the tubes glued into over-sized aluminium lugs. Nobody else seems to remember them. I'd like one now!

Raleigh Dynatech? I had a 500 model, sorry I sold it but they were prone to cracking where the tube is bonded into the lug.

Yes it was dynatech and it cost Raleigh a fortune a think about 90 percent broken in three months I had one it was a great frame super light with the alloy lugs and bonded ( no brass soldier ) . It was great to think that the world of cycling at one time was all about a frame and keeping it for years

@@dannsmcshane1233 I eventually found it. I thought it was a really clever idea. Looking at how strong adhesives are I thought it was a perfect solution. I remembered the epoxy resin adverts from the 70s where they lifted an Austin 1100 on a little bit of glue in the middle of the roof. Lots of thin bike tubing doesn't like being heated. 753 had to be silver soldered. So you'd roughening the surfaces and a load of epoxy resin would work. (You wonder what heating a really precise aluminium lug to get it to expand, and then letting it cool and tighten around a tube would do).

You're mentioning one of the aluminum Alloys used for the space shuttle. That's actually an Aluminum Scandium alloy. A few other bike makers used it, most notably Kona, in the Kapu their high end bike from 2003. Ironically, that bike was a replacement for a broken titanium frame of theirs.

i still have my Raleigh 753 i bought back in the 80s,it has more changes than triggers brush ,but still great bike.

Thank you for posting this most interesting video. My beautiful old Raleigh Record Ace (circa 1979/81) is built with Reynolds 531 double-butted frame and forks. This bike has more than 50,000 kms, and has stood up to a lot of strain, and even a couple of falls, and even a terrible crush under a truck's wheel hub- that sent the front rim into a tight "eight"!! It's still true. Amazing. The rest is basically Campy, except for an exceptional Suntour Superbe Pro 53/39 chainset that I'll be mounting today ! I'm very intrigued by your 931 tubing. However, I love old bikes because of their esthetics. The new builders just don't know how to design and hand cut beautiful scrolls and fretwork. I find modern bikes ugly and chunky.

You're not wrong, modern steel is just welded so no beautiful lugs, as for dropped top tube they are an aesthetic abomination, same goes for new trend for lowered seat tubes, so ugly. I can think of a whole new genre of bike , fast city commute/light tourer, goes like this. High quality handbuilt steel, detailed lugs a must, beautiful decals, chrome work, forks that are raked, audax geometry. light touring/commute wheels, spokes that glitter and dazzle in the sunshine. full mudguards, rear rack, front rack potential. Comfortable upright riding position, perfect for scenery and conversation, swept handlebars. Triple chainset for when touring. Getting back to your sun tour superb though, I picked up an old Olmo, Is campagnolo apart from superbe rear mech. It seemed like an odd choice but when I was cleaning it up it suddenly all made sense, very high quality Japanese technology, is lovely, no shame in that.

I currently ride a Schwinn Super Sport GLX made with Reynolds 853 and a Fuji Connoisseur made from Reynolds 725.

Where is it sold in the US?

The touring club I belonged to was ( The west London Y.H.A. Cycle Touring Club. ) We had three hot riders in the group, John Saddler, He was fast enough to catch the rear wheel of Reg Haris, And, Roy Sweeny, Who could run down a 500 cc Triumph motor bike, Then there was me, And on a long hard hill, I could leave them both behind. Utility trials, Too the City of Bath, And back to London, 200 miles, 16 hour's, 15 M.P.H. And they were the good old days. The pain and suffering, We did not feel a thing, One of my rides was ( The National Cyclo-cross championship, 1957, ) I rode with the British Army team, I did feal some pain on that one. Rule Britannia, Bodica never showed the pain. From Pictish clans whence I came, Return to them my remains. Coom-Ra Bass-Alpin.

yes, that's a great tubeset for a long distance bike, I've had one myself.

Had many Reynolds tubed bikes loved them all. I despair when I see an untidy unorganised factory floor, dirty machines and filings swept into a corner, too much work in progress come on guys, cycling is going to be massive get lean.

I also am lucky enough to have Seven bikes. I believe that they make all their own tubing. It would be nice if they would make a stainless steel frame. I think Independent Fabrication has a Reynolds 953 frame.

Reynolds and Columbus ARE so superior.......... SO exceptional........... The only way to go.

I’ve owned about 15-18 bikes of different frame materials. I’m currently enjoying my Pashley Guv’nor with Reynolds 531, and loving another double-butted, steel framed fixed commuter. I have a high-end aluminium Cyclocross bike, but MUCH prefer the smoother riding steel bikes. Early in my bike years I thought steel was passé, and that aluminium was better/newer technology. That’s not true at all. I will always have steel bikes in my stable from now on. The phrase ‘Steel is Real’ is very true. For most applications, I’ll take steel over anything.

word! quality steel just feels better than a "cheap" CFK frame 3-5 times the price, the extra weight taken into accout. the springy flex preserves energy, just like finally getting the tyre pressure right.

I've got a Pashley guv'nor too, an early one with Cinelli h/b stem, every time I take it out somebody compliments it, it literally has a 100% track record for people stopping in their tracks and commentating on what a beautiful bike it is, is great having something that brings pleasure to other people too, just wish people would bring out their old classic cars more often rather than lock them up in anonymous warehouse.. bring back a bit more stylised culture.

Glad to see the Hellenic flag there.

can you imagine: taking your own "unobtanium" prototype tubing made from material designed for the space shuttle and giving it to your friend who happens to be a world class fabricator and having your own custom frame built... perks 😂

I have too many bikes. All materials . I favor steel . Chased carbon for 30 yrs . Too many broken frames . None crashed. I ride 13000 or more yearly much on gravel. Steel. With wide tires gives a nice ride. I have Reynolds frames still ridden from the 80s.

The problem with 953 is it came out too late. Must compete with carbon and Ti

In the long run you know carbon fiber will win. As much as steel is evolving (and it is remarkably), carbon fiber technology is evolving even faster- lower costs, more resilience, etc. Steel at this point is a ride comfort choice.

I have to disagree, folks need peace of mind when their spending big bucks on a racer, especially those over 110 kg. Yes my steel looses a little on a col to a cf, but it has climbed 'em sweetly all the same, and is plenty fast in other areas. It's a racing version of, say, 853. I agree the new 'form' of cf that came out a few years ago is interesting but it won't come out as a bike frame for many many years if at all, and is highly magnetic so no good in a storm and will be at a huge price. I don't say it won't happen though. I have plenty of solid cf on my steel and cf forks and it is still half the price or more of an equivalent cf bike, and is m-m. Steel deflects stress like no other material, so I do worry about my cf forks and would prefer steel but I like the perf and lightness of cf forks.
