Meet the Ibizan Hound

Ibizans are lithe and leggy visitors from the dawn of civilization. Art history students will recognize the elongated head, with its large erect ears, as a familiar motif of ancient Egypt. The elegant, racy body stands 22.5 to 27.5 inches at the shoulder, with coat colors of solid red or white, or red and white patterns. The rosy-colored leathers of the nose, eye rims, and lips-along with amber or caramel eyes-perfectly complement the coat. The breed’s quiet grace is often described as deer-like.

Some facts: 1- Hound hunting is widely spread in Southern Spain. Seasons end with ferocious dog slaughters. More than 100.000 dogs per year are terminated, and among them, greyhounds and ibizans. 2- the original name of the breed is “Ca Eivissenc” in catalan balearic 3- Most people keep these dogs in high esteem in their original regions, and there are big organizations in northern (and also in southern) Spain dedicated to save discarded hunting dogs placing them for adoption 4- these organizations are also involved against bullfighting (another shameful activity) 5- only far right politicians (Aznar type) protect bullfighting and dog hunting

da zzle never buy a pet, if you really want a podenco find a rescue/adoption operation that saves dogs and puppies from the streets in Spain. these dogs are normally killed there when they’re “too old” to hunt at age 4 or just abandoned on the streets. We found our podenco puppy from such a place and they use the adoption money to save more dogs 🐕 she was taken from her litter at 5 weeks old and put on a chain in the sun. it took about half a year but now she’s a confident little pup again, she’s the best friend i could ask for.

I would recommend checking out a rescue before contacting a breeder because you can save the life of a really great dog. Podencos are used to hunt rabbits for one season and then are abandoned because they are not pet worthy. If you have your heart set on one of these majestic sight hounds please consider the dogs at: www.ibizanhoundrescue.com

The main problem is since the Ibizan hound is a less popular breed, it would be harder to find a really good breeder. Either way, many people drive miles and miles to find a good breeder. If that sounds like too much of a hassle, getting a rescue from Spain might be a bit easier. Also, a lot of beezers come from Spain including purebred puppies. Besides, you get the satisfaction of saving two lives, the dog you adopt and the dog that gets to come into the rescue because of you. All I’m saying is give rescue a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised.

@@emmamcgreal1116 I always try to adopt dogs first, but the fact is there are many many many breeds that just don't exist in shelters or rescues. Ibizan hounds, among many breeds, especially sighthounds, are very rarely found in shelters, at least where I'm from. Importing a rescue from Spain may be feasible but for the vast majority of people it wouldn't. In that case getting it from a responsible breeder is the best course of action. (And I think most people can agree that this is the goal. For dogs to NOT exist in shelters/rescues and have every dog that's produced have a loving home lined up for it before it's even conceived).

Depens on ehat language you’re talking. The original name is “Ca Eivissenc” from the balearic island of “Eivissa” All sounding with a strong “s”. This is the original balearic-catalan language. For only spanish speakers, the pronounciation becomes dificult and they deforme the sound to “th”. But this problem does not oblige english speakers to pronounce as a spanish speaker

They are bred in their thousands every year for the hunting season, and then discarded, drowned, poisoned, shot, dumped on motorways, or chained at hunting lodges and left to die without food or water. Spaniards are not fit to keep animals - same with the Portuguese. These dogs are all over the islands. So many charities rescue Thousands of podenco, galgo and ibizan hounds every year. It a disgrace.

You're very ignorant. Yes, during the hunting season hounds are bred, and when it's over hunters get rid of them. Some end up dying or in kennels. But that is a very small group of people, and hunters are getting fewer by the day. The majority of the population will do absolutely everything they can to try and end dog racing and hunting. We contribute to charities, sign petitions and help rescues help this dogs and bring them into loving homes. Just because it is done by a select group of people you can't deem an entire nation unfit and cruel. Especially when we are trying to redime the situation. Please get informed about the issue before leaving dumb founded, ignorant comments
