    Ha, ha! You know, I’ve enabled “monetizing” on each video, but I’ve yet to reclaim the money I’m supposedly making, which is like $50/month. I appreciate your thoughtfulness! I may get a return someday, but right now I’m just trying to pay it forward:) All the best with your work.

    Damn, all the extra money spent just to support that beast. Totally worth it if you have room on the truck though. I hate having to bring in M18s or an M40 and genny on commercials just to break them with an 8x or 12x. A big, punchy but soft LED is ideal for that type of wrappy key. I really need more RBG LED in my life. Thanks Luke and Alan for another informative video!

    Matthews has a much cheaper crank stand called the Mini-vator. Have used it with he S360. Matthews is also coming out with a smaller version of the Mini-vator (virtually the same price) that I am looking forward to seeing.It should be good for M40s as well, especially for interiors where a smaller footprint is desirable.

    Luke first must say YOU DID IT AGAIN! This is better than what they did at NAB even. Quick question How is this diffusion panel being held? Two c-stand booms connected in "Roman Handshake" at the knuckles to get it across? Still doesn't seem like what's going on (And FAR past the level of jankiness Luke is willing to subscribe to over safety. Reason I say this is i have a single mambo combo stand with a 41/2" lollipop and starting mostly in my studio (not on location). Knew I needed 2 for butterfly frames (on an angle) but most of the time i'll need this setup will be indoors. with a vertical frame. HOw'd you pull off the magic of the floating panel? I bet the bagged stand is a prop lol. HELP US OBI ONE! You're our only hope! :-D The fact your name is Luke is THE definition of irony in that statement. HAHA. Happy Sunday my good man.

    Excellent overview, thank you! What are you using to support the 8x8 horizontally on the Hi-roller stand?

  • @meetthegaffer

    @meetthegaffer

    6 жыл бұрын

    There’s no support per se except cranking down on the head on the stand to secure the ear holding the square tube. The 8x is light enough that the square rail doesn’t have to be supported on the other end. As long as you follow the basic physics of setting a stand: right hand rule, (high) leg under the weight, and a bag or two to counter weight the base... you should be good. Hope that makes sense!

    Alan, what type of wheels do you like to use when you make your carts? I'm looking for some good rubber locking casters and was wondering if you have any recommendations. Thanks!

    A tricky problem. I have been using a 10" or 12" tire at the front and building in a Backstage-style foot--actuated brake on those. It is a lot of work. One of my shopmates just installed a 8" lever-lock wheel on a cart he made for the back wheels. The supplier was California Caster in San Leandro. I think any large caster place might have it. It locks the rotation and tire. Not rated for much weight, however, so not sure that works for all carts. 8" is pretty much as small as I want to go for a cart, and only for the back wheels. Trying to put heavier weight in the front on the fixed, larger wheels generally. "King pin-less" rotating casters are the best - not much more and they swivel many times easier...but they don't come in all sizes.

    Thanks for your thorough reply! I am hauling a lot or weight with sand bags on my head cart so I will checkout how backstage does their brakes. Are you saying you use a fixed axel on the front and castors on the back? I will take your recommendation on size and check out our local castor shop.

    Also would you say pneumatic is the way to go over solid rubber? Thanks again!

  • @alansteinheimer4274

    @alansteinheimer4274

    I would highly recommend trying to get the sandbag weight over the fixed wheels and make them as big as possible, either 10" or 12". Studio Eq carts has great 12" giant tires that I used on one cart but at $115 apiece sorta pricey. You might also consider the Backstage foam-filled 10" tires for the front load-bearing weight. Although they aren't cheap either, a lot less. I use them as the back tire pair on my Backstage muscle carts - that way I can pivot on tires that never go flat. Another thought is to make your own axel for the front tires so you lower the cart as much as possible - keeping visibility over the top more open and the center of gravity lower. Not sure where you are located but you could also consider buying a cart from Backstage or Studio carts and modifying it. Sort of sacrilegious to alter a brand new piece of gear - but I have welded onto every single cart I own to make it more to my liking.

    I have stayed with pneumatic for the front, fixed tires, ideally bigger and carrying more weight, and have gone with 8" softer but solid rubber wheels on the back steering part. The theory: with "king pin-less" swiveling they turn way easier, the slightly harder rubber (vs. pneumatic) allows for easier turning, and the smaller size tires means it doesn't get caught turning against walls and such. The downside: not as good in dirt or off-road. However, not that often I am taking these carts thru the dirt.

    Is there anything on the market in LED world that would give as much output and softness as Skypanel 360 but only in daylight color temperature?

    Possibly- I am dying to see the Mole tenner LED (1600w). It was only available as a rental, but I think it is finally for sale last I read. Not cheap - $12,300 plus tax...accessories? Of course you would need to diffuse it, but as a Fresnel it would have other purposes on other days.

    Keep in mind for some markets it might be better to own 4 -S60s and put them behind a piece of diffusion. Same output and lights that would be used more often on other kinds of shoots.

    The stand the 360 is on is an American Grip BOA stand, which is the low-boy version of the Roadrunner 220 crank stand. It’s a great stand built for the load. americangrip.com/product-category/stands/crank-stands/
