It is 150 years since the first of the iconic ‘Wallace’ fountains were installed in Paris in 1872, following the devastating upheavals of the Franco-Prussian War and Commune of 1870-71. The original fountains were gifted to the city of Paris by Sir Richard Wallace, who gained renown for his philanthropy on both sides of the Channel after inheriting a fortune from his likely father, the 4th Marquess of Hertford, in 1870.
