Meet The 2006 NBA Draft: The Most UNDERWHELMING Draft Ever!

Спорт

The 2006 NBA draft had a lot of players with high expectations. Andrea Bargnani, Adam Morrison, and Tyrus Thomas among others were projected to be stars in the league. But...it never happened, and in my opinion the 2006 draft is the most underwhelming in recent NBA history.
I make all kinds of NBA videos which include trivia, analysis, player stories, countdowns, conspiracies, and mysteries. Make sure to leave a like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

To clarify, I don’t think this is the worst draft ever, as I still think 2000 holds that title. But that draft was expected to be bad because the class was so weak. The 2006 draft IIRC had a lot of hype back then and a lot of top picks were expected to be stars...yet pretty much every top pick busted besides Aldridge

Andy Hoops i honestly think the most underwhelming draft was the 2017 josh jackson, de aaron fox and jonathan isaac alrrady showing signs of busting, obviously its to early to tell but lonzo and ntilinkina have also been MAJOR UNDERWHELMING so far

JJ Reddick and Barea are what today's NBA needs. Role players that can shoot 3's very well and can adapt to any situation and fit well with super-star players. They are the guys that fit the last piece of a "super-team". Look at Philly with Butlers, Simmons and Embi.. Reddick fit right in to spread the floors.

Different eras, different playstyles. Back when Barkley played, there was no zone defense, and there wasn't 5 seconds back to the basket rule (Barkley rule). Unlike Barkley, those guys were successful because they expanded their skill sets. Barkley was one of the players who happened to play in the time that was right for him, and even though he lacked height, he made up for it with physicallity.

How do you make a video about how the 2006 draft was underwhelming without even explaining the biggest reason why? This was the first draft in years not to allow high school seniors to enter. If you add Durant, Conley, and Thad Young in there, it doesn't look like such a bad draft.

Raptors and Grizzlies got the short end (by accident or by design) in drafting. In the first year of those two teams, the 1st overall pick was Tim Duncan. Imagine if either Vancouver or Toronto got him. Instead they picked 5th (Bryant "sleep country" Reeves) and 6th (Damon Stoudemaire, who was a solid player, but not Tim Duncan). If the Grizzlies got Tim Duncan, they'd still be in Vancouver.

Ever since I played the game, I can easily recognize almost every player from every team in every season, one reasons is that I love creating rosters and My GM(My League) mode, the other is that u don’t follow every players if u r not playing them. Video game plus watching NBA is really helpful for anyone who loves the game. I mean it!

I was too young in 2000, so I don't know about that draft, but 2006 wasn't really a very anticipated draft class, especially because it was the first one since the adoption of the one and done rule. A record number of high school players from the 2005 class declared for the draft the year before, so the freshman class that year was very weak and 2006 high school seniors weren't allowed to get in. It had been anticipated to be Greg Oden's draft for 2 years back then, just as much as 2003 was expected to be LeBron's draft (it doesn't matter how things turned out with Oden). So it was already considered kind of a weird class, because some of the talent that should've been part of it left the year before, not knowing what the rules would've been the following year, while others that were considered the top incoming prospects weren't allowed to declare. If you use the internet archive you can see as many of the lottery pick (especially in the second half of the lottery) weren't projected that high the year before or even at the start of the season, they just were able to get the most of a season with a weak class. Brandon Roy was a late bloomer, he wasn't considered a first round pick before his senior year, even though he ended up showing he was worth that kind of selection. Randy Foye wasn't really much of a prospect until his final season. Redick and Morrison were seen respectively as a bubble first rounder and a mid first-late lotto guy, but had too good of a season. Sene came out of nowhere. O'Bryant was able to get the most out of a decent run. It was a weird draft, because it ended up being so bad at the top, but I can't really say there were such big expectations. To me, as of now, one of the most underwhelming drafts ever is the 2014, even though it produced a 2 superstars and a few good players, back then everybody was talking about it as a game changing draft, with at least 4 superstars and many all stars.

Brandon Roy was a badass. He likely would have been a HOFer if he hadn't had the knee issues. It's also interesting to note how differently the league regards under-sized big men/tweeners these days. Hell, two of the best teams in the league (Rockets/Warriors) both feature centers shorter than 6'7" in their best lineups. Now every team wants to find their own P.J. Tucker, Paul Millsap or Draymond Green.

I think drafting is a bit more random when it's 19 year old players instead of 22 year old players. Size matter not; it's their upside and whether they live up to it or not. Bargnani had great upside but never improved one bit during his career. Either he hit his peak when he was drafted, or he just didn't put in the extra effort.
