I have just signed up to your channel. I also had a Labrador for over 10 years and lost him last September and in all honesty have never felt pain as much as I did losing him and I still cry over him and kiss his ashes every night. I am now however about to get another Lab who was born last Saturday. Buddy was the best dog I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and he will always be a huge miss.

Congrats on your new puppy! I got mine too 3 weeks ago at the age of 12 weeks :) The first week was super tiring hahaha I didn't get enough sleep at all. My dachshund (Kimiko) slept with me the first few nights since we needed to bond first, then I gradually moved her to her crate when she was deep asleep (her crate was next to my bed and the door was open because believe me or not, she was well potty trained since day 1 hahaha she would go to her potty spot on her own every night before going back to sleep again) she woke up a couple of times and cried when she realized that I had put her in the crate hahaha and crawled back to my bed and then I had to repeat the process all over again: cuddle -> went asleep -> put her back into the crate. During the day, I always feed her in her crate so she gets a positive association with her crate. I never ever lock her crate, only closing the door when she's having her food. I also trained her to 'Go Home' and give her treats / toys whenever she enters her crate following this command for the first week, now she absolutely LOVES her crate! She would go into her crate and take naps by herself and for the last week, she slept through the night on her own too (I have since moved her crate to the hallway of our apartment, which is just in front of my bedroom) They learn super fast at this stage, so make sure to provide some time for training! Kimiko has learned 12 commands so far. I usually train my Kimiko for about 10-15 mins before her 12pm nap and before bedtime so she would rest really well. Some said 5 mins of mental training would suffice if you also take them on walks (5 mins x their month age), but since she hasn't had all of her vaccines yet, I can't take her out frequently, only to some friends' houses with dogs that I know are fully vaccinated already. As for her potty training, she did really well even from the first day! Since I live in an apartment, I bought a potty tray where you can put a layer of underpad beneath the top layer and change the underpad everyday. For the first couple of days, I watched her like a hawk hahaha whenever I see her start sniffing around especially in circles, I would direct her to her potty tray, and she eventually understands that her potty tray is where she's supposed to pee and poo.

Hes so cute, congratulations! Just thought I would share some tips from our trainer and a fellow doxie owner. Really young puppies shouldn't be left alone unsupervised unless they are in a play pen or a crate with hard toys like kongs, not stuffed toys or ropes or even bedding that they can chew up and eat. A big mistake most people make is to let their new puppies have free reign of multiple rooms which not only overwhelms them when they first move in and are very small, but also promotes them peeing in secrets places throughout the house. We have a play pen with our dogs crate, litter box (yes you can litter train doxies!), and water in it that he would be in when we couldn't supervise him. He only had access to one room (the main living/ kitchen area) for several months. You can add access to an additional room once every month or two. I can' recommend getting a trainer early on enough. Doxies are really prone to behavioral issues so its taken a ton of work since day one to get our little guy in good shape. They are just the best and never stop being the cutest though, wouldn't change him for the world.

That’s good as he only has rein of downstairs, so the front room (and only in the evening) and then the day it’s just the kitchen and hallway (we are all open plan). Luckily at the mo not found any secret toilet messes! We have bought him a Penn and it’s very big so he has plenary of room but he just barks his head off when he is left there alone, the crate keeps him calmer. We just need to get on top of the toilet training then we should be a lot more settled 😊

I’ve just watched your video with Jerry he’s so cute ! I’ve got a miniature dachshund she’s a black n tab silver dapple as well she’ll be year in august . Be prepared they are so needy lol Kaia still sleeps in our room in her crate which is good. They are quite hard to toilet train it’s just being on it constantly we ended up putting a table outside over her tray which has fake grass on for toilet area . Kaia know a few commands sit, wait, paw , down we’re trying to teach her to roll over she’s getting it they love to learn ! The most important thing is to enjoy it they grow so quick . Looking forward to seeing more videos with gorgeous Jerry ❤️xx

Aww bless, yes we are lucky Jerry sleeps all night and loves his crate downstairs (we leave on classic music all night for him as well) but he has got wee (he may still go in the house but that’s usually down to us forgetting to take him out each hour if he does) but poo we are trying to heavily praise & treat when he does it outside but it’s so hard as in the day we have no idea when he will go! We have tried logging the times but there really isn’t any pattern, also take him out after every meal but we have been waiting for over a hour outside before and still nothing! I just wish we could get that under control but yes it’s hard to enjoy him as a pup because we just wish he would grow up and learn but of course we would miss him as a pup 🤍🐶 x

You don't need to explain your choice... pedigree or rehomer is totally up to you. Crate training is a great idea, its a doggy den that they come to love (as long as its used in a positive way) and it keeps them safe when you're not about. And you can't be about all the time so doggy has to get used to being alone and I believe the earlier the better. don't feel bad about your decisions. Enjoy.

With a dashounds all rules never apply… I have a 6 year old and I started crate training day 1. It took a good 2 months for her to get really trained. 1 month equals 1 hour at a time during the day in crate. Before bedtime play hard with them, wear them out and put back in crate. The older they get the more they will love their crate.

5000 dollar bill from the vet might stop you from letting your dog play with anything that has string attached. I had a rope toy that got eaten and twisted his intestines and he nearly died. The vet said never let you dog play with any rope toy. Just a heads up. My dog ate it piece by piece and I had a huge vet bill.

This was a decision with my partner and we came to choosing a pure breed & a puppy for our first family dog.

so you basically did pretty much everything wrong from the start and made the process more difficult for yourself than it should have been. why did you not consult behaviorist before getting a puppy ? this is not how you leave your dog alone the first time, this is not how you crate train. this was a pretty cruel way of doing it.

So cruel leaving a new puppy I had a dog for 16 years and never left her once if she couldn’t go with me I wouldn’t go I also didn’t have a crate she didn’t cry at all as she also slept with me from day 1

You cannot leave a puppy this young alone. He is a baby, you train him in very small steps to stay alone, 5 min, 10 min and so on. He's small guys come on!

There's much more about you than the dog in this video. Not impressed by you. The puppy is terrific but the owner is narcissistic.

You should never leave a puppy to cry for 1 hour in their crate at night 🙁 also to leave him locked in his crate while you went to watch football for over two hours is cruel 😞 know wonder he was feeling anxious 😥 and was sick 😕 and before you comment back I am a registered dog breeder 🐶

Just a question? As I’m not a dog owner. What’s the difference them being in the crate for 2 hours to being in there at night for longer? I’m just unsure x

We have done extensive research as well as talking to canine behavior experts on having a new puppy, and specially a dachshund puppy and no matter what you read another person will recommend the opposite. As a "resisted dog breeder" you should be very aware that every puppy is different. Also, as I explained we were literally a 1 minute walk from out house monitoring our dog though a camera, I highly disagree this is irresponsible or cruel by any means... this is a introduction to easing him out of his separation anxiety as we are home with him all day and every day - as well as the fact he was asleep most of the time we were out. Same as parenting you should never point the finger at someone doing something "wrong" because there is no right or wrong way. Every dog is unique. We now are at just 9+ weeks old and have a puppy that loves his crate and sleeps all though the night, even though we left him to cry for a hour on a couple of nights in his crate while he was getting use to his new environment. We did it our way and we got it right and that's the bottom line!

@@Littlegiftsco Nothing, when crate training unfortunately and usually they will take a while to get use to it. Which does mean leaving them at some point on their own, where they will cry. If you always go to see the puppy when they cry initially they will lean that cry gets them a reward (you coming back) and this is unintentionally teaching them this behavior and its much harder to break when enforced. We had him in our room for the first 4 nights then downstairs for 2 with my partner sleeping with him and then we left him to be so it was all done very gently :)

So because I watch dachshund videos on KZread I get ones like this? If I want to watch narcissistic behavior by no talent people who think they're prettier and smarter than they are, I'll find them myself. Geez, how many women out there use puppies or kittens or any other excuse to make videos about themselves. Just stop.
