Meet MirkoPC - a tiny full-featured Raspberry Pi CM4 PC!

Ғылым және технология

The MirkoPC is a full-featured Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4-based PC board.
It makes the experience of running a Pi as a daily computer much better, with features like a built-in full-size M.2 slot for fast NVMe storage, and a high-quality headphone amplifier.
This video goes over all the details, and also highlights one of the things I like most about MirkoPC-it was designed by one person, Mirek, from Poland!

    2:53 i mean uSD Cards have a bump along the edge which is sticking out from the connector. you can just use a finger to "latch" onto that bump to pull it out instead of trying to grab the sides but yes having it on the edge of the PCB is obviously still much more convenient.

  • @obsoletepowercorrupts
    @obsoletepowercorrupts3 жыл бұрын

    I think, considering the Mplayer situation, it would be worthwhile looking at GTK4 with its media player abilities and customisation (including OpenGL). Looking at that board: The nvme seems unlikely to expoit full speed especially in those power-shortfall scenarios and I think, for what the board is, nvme was over the top when sata m2 could have been used, especially with port multiplier so you can convert to a sata cable and use a extra psu. ZFS or BTRFS with port multipler on 2.5inch HDDs would be cool. All the boards since the pi3bplus suffer the same problem in that you cannot upgrade the RAM (or replace it if it breaks). It would have been nice to see the pi3b have a sodimm (or something) slot but at 1GB RAM, it was tolerable for the machine you have (although frankly the Soc should have been one that allowed 4GB or at least 2GB). Anything more powerful than that like the pi4 simply used too much power and at that point you might as well get a low power mitx board or find a way to downsize a ARM server if ARM was (for some reason) a must. The pi4 is marketed as "your new desktop computer" and while that may be possible, it is ridiculous that a desktop (or even some latops) cannot have RAM upgraded or replaced (if a chip dies). Why do Americans fall over in wuv with the Pi so much? Is it a Brit heritage thing like when you discover you have tartan or something? And yes, I know this is polish. I mean in general.

I just received the newest revision board yesterday and on the audio Mirek has changed the audio to and here is is comment: headphone amp will not work with hifiberry profile because I had to change headphone amp from TPA6133A2 to TPA6130A2 (due to IC shortage). Ha, someone noticed! It's less 'grading' more 'actually remembered to do a little color correction'. So far only one of the cameras I own even shoots in a format that would allow proper grading. Maybe I'll upgrade my cameras someday if the channel gets to the point where I can afford it. For now, I'm still stuck at 1080p since I don't want to go to 4K until I have a better long-term storage solution, and all my cameras and gear can handle 4K@60!

I will watch this video again, but I find many video's on youtube move far to fast for a newbie to keep up with every step. I think's there's an assumption we are all well-learned in Linux. Unfortunately that's a limitation of the current chip used in the Raspberry Pi 4 and CM4 - it only has USB 2.0 internally, plus one PCI Express lane (which is used on this board by the M.2 slot). You could add a PCI Express switch and another USB 3.0 chip to get both M.2 and USB 3.0, but that adds expense/complexity and would require more board space.

    Do one need the emmc on this card?, I mean, if you use this mirkopc, with the ssd, will it boot directly from the ssd, or do one need microsd/emmc to get it up and running? I have gotten the standard io board, but can't decide which cm4 to choose. (haven't seen any with 8gb ram yet?), but one with 4g and emm storage, or 4g without storage.. hm..

    You can now boot directly from NVMe but only with the currently-in-beta bootloader that requires 'sideloading' until its out of beta. But my favorite combo now is to use the CM4 Lite versions and I can always boot them from a microSD card temporarily or if I need to do that initial side load, then I can boot from NVMe after that. You can also boot from USB but that can be a little complicated on many CM4 boards since they lack a USB 3 chip over PCIe, and the USB 2.0 bus is disabled by default on the CM4!

    @@JeffGeerling Excellent. I installed Stellarium on my new tablet and it shows all the starlink satellites. They are all over and move fast. I saw a train of them following each other close! Maybe they haven't been assigned a position? I have no idea why a dozen would follow each other so close, or even if what I'm seeing updates. My dream is inching towards reality! One day I can live tranquil but have internet :)

  • @JeffGeerling

    @@piconano Those 'trains' are actually recent launches-when SpaceX blasts a set of 60 new sats, they are all in one tight group, and the 2nd stage spins to give them a little momentum and have them slowly push way from each other. Then the onboard thrusters start to guide them into their individual (spaced out) orbits on the same orbital plane. After a few weeks (months? not sure exactly how long), they are in the right place in their orbit and they are brought online. So the ones you see in those satellite-conga-lines are not yet actively transmitting customer data.

    @Jeff Geerling well I'm aware of the gigabit Ethernet and wifi isn't that reliable for the application I'm looking for. I have a suggestion for placing second gigabit Ethernet on the same footprint, there are connectors available with two USB 2 and on Ethernet port on same block placed vertically. 4 USB 2 ports and 2 gigabit Ethernet ports can fit easily. There are a ton of things that can be done with a second gigabit Ethernet. Please pass on this suggestion to mirko . Thank you very much.

    I haven't over-driven it, but I do know it should be able to accept a bit more on both the voltage and current than the rating. But since I only have one and getting a replacement could take a few weeks, I'm overly cautious about 'experimenting' when it comes to power input :D Now... a regular old Pi on the other hand... ⚡️
