I'm a rural mail carrier and this is such a common issue on most of the rural routes in our office. Most of the carriers put dog warning cards in their case ( where we sort mail) at the addresses that have dogs that actually have attacked, so new carriers who run the routes know. I had a coworker who recently had a big package for an address he'd never had to deliver to before, and they had small terriers that started barking and attacking him, so he actually sprayed them with pepper spray to get them off of him so he could get back in his vehicle. The owners called the police on him for doing that to their dogs, and when I heard that it really ticked me off because this man is about to retire and have knee surgery, so he could have been hurt badly, and all they care about is their dogs being pepper sprayed! I've only been attacked once, but was able to throw the package in between me and the dog so I could escape. I was at a house that had a dog warning card, but the owners had been keeping the dog inside the house when they knew they were getting a package. This day though it was outside and I didn't realize until it came around the corner and started chasing and growling at me. The reason it was out was probably because it was a Sunday and most people don't realize that we deliver packages only on Sundays soo.... My honest opinion is that people who have dogs should keep them in the house when they know they're having a package coming (informed delivery app), get a parcel locker so that the carrier can put the packages in a safe place at a safe distance from the house, or keep the dog in a pin or chained . We've had customers outside with their dogs who say the dog won't bite, but when you step out they nip or bite. Some customers have had the audacity to laugh as their dog acts this way. I've gotten to where I leave packages on top of garbage can in customers driveways or on top of their car or truck if it's in sight, and if it's raining and I forget to bring trash bag to work to put bigger packages in, the customers are out of luck on a rainy day and if their dog's out, the package is set in the same place but wet .

The USPS needs to start pressing charges!!!! They would not get any mail until this was resolved!

We do not deliver after an attack. I was attacked by a loose German Shepard- carriers need to start suing in civil court as civilians

If your dog bites then you are a terrible owner, no excuses for it.

There is no 'mail man vs dog' rivalry either. My dog likes the postman and will bring letters to me, that's becuase it was trained well from a pup.

Dog ice cream comes in three flavors: bacon, mailman, and paperboy.

I'm a mail carrier and I've been bitten a few times. I'll report any bite to Animal Control (it's the law, if the bite draws blood), press charges, and sue the owner. This guy's probably suffering from PTSD but I'm not there yet.

I don't blame you, the dog owners know damn well you come almost every day and should know to keep there dogs clear of you. My moms mailman kinda knows my moms dog and lets her pup grab the mail from the mail slot. Some ties he like to play a little tug but that's about it.

The law should be like this: if the house has dogs then they should go and bring the mail by themselves!!!! If the house has no dog they can have the mail delivered to their houses .... no one deserves this terror and fear

Mailmen/women do not have to deliver to a house with a dog. They just choose to be polite when they do. But each house with a dog is marked by the regular carrier. If there is an issue that house no longer gets mail.

Had a friend that carried mail, she was bitten on the arm. It caused permanent nerve damage, she continued to carry mail till she retired.

The USPS HALT pepper spray is a joke. It won't stop a vicious dog. Mail carriers need something MUCH stronger.

Yes you can. I was bitten in 2016. The law firm I hired went after the owner's insurance. In the end I received five figures in compensation.

A coworker of mine was doing a delivery at someone’s house and was bitten. After the lawyer got his part and medical bills were paid he got a little over 20,000

guy’s packing double sprays he’s not messing around

They need bear spray. That will take care of more than one dog at a time.

Those pepper sprays are too weak to stop any real vicious threat. All mail carriers should carry something much stronger.

"Oh he'll just lick you to death". I hear that one all the time! Tired of people thinking its amusing to let their dog out after i have told them not to. Some customers have lost package delivery because of this. We should be able to work in a safe environment. mail carriers and ups drivers have been killed by dogs.

People with dogs should be sue for what ever they iwn fir bitting a mail man just don't deliver there mail

All were from dogs that "don't bite" according to their owners.

Although the dog bite is bad what's worse is this old man feeling like he has to keep working that job under those circumstances. There are always going to be issues with a 9 to 5 job. The solution is starting your own business. I bet if this old man owned a store, or a publishing company etc his life would be 100 percent better. Lesson here work hard to get out of the 9 to 5.

Big Dog breeds are like Autonomous Weapons, no matter how well you train them, they will always have a mind of their own. The sooner the Governments realize this the better.

Your supposed to wear your bag on your shoulder not across your chest.

First thing they tell us is don’t wear your satchel cross body like he does, your satchel is the 1st line of defense against agressive dogs and to bring it down and use it as a shield when a dog attacks to give you time to access your dog pepper spray...Probably why he lost count of how many times he’s been bitten.

If your bag is on your shoulder you can get to it quicker. Every carrier I see now wears it across their chest. I almost got killed by a Rottweiler. I was able to get my bag off of my shoulder and block him while at the same time getting my spray and hosing him down. This was a big dog. The owner got mad at me for spraying his dog. All I remember was hitting him with a lot of F bombs. I was a mail man for 23 years. Never got bit. A lot of close calls but never bit due the training I received.

Guy didn’t even buckle up first before taking off. He should know better lol

Should just allow mail carriers to carry guns. Most stupid regulation ever.

Never got bite, in fact I’m confident that if I were being attacked by anyone half the dogs in my neighborhoods would come to my rescue. I love animals and people will even bring their puppies to meet me so they know who I am as they grow.
