MEET DEVIN AI First AGI | First AI Software Engineer

Meet the worlds first AI software engineer 👇
💡Spoiler alert: Devin will be an amazing tool used by developers to enhance their workflows, NOT replace them.
Here is a bit about Devin....
Meet Devin, the world’s first fully autonomous AI software engineer.

Devin is a tireless, skilled teammate, equally ready to build alongside you or independently complete tasks for you to review.
With Devin, engineers can focus on more interesting problems and engineering teams can strive for more ambitious goals.
Devin’s Capabilities
With advances in long-term reasoning and planning, Devin can plan and execute complex engineering tasks requiring thousands of decisions. Devin can recall relevant context at every step, learn over time, and fix mistakes.
Devin is equipped with common developer tools including the shell, code editor, and browser within a sandboxed compute environment-everything a human would need to do their work.
Finally, Devin has the ability to actively collaborate with the user. Devin reports on its progress in real time, accepts feedback, and works together with you through design choices as needed.
Devin represents a significant leap forward in the realm of AI, embodying the concept of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) within the coding and software development industry. AGI refers to a machine's ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks to the same extent that a human can. This contrasts with more specialized AI that excels in specific tasks but lacks versatility. Devin is not just a tool; it is a revolution, signaling a new era where AI collaborates with humans to push the boundaries of what's possible in technology and development.

Devin itself as it stands will be an interesting and useful tool for my guys to tinker with and become a fair bit more productive. V2.0 will ramp things up enough to make junior dev roles really hard to justify unless the meatsack is borderline God-like. V3.0 will ramp things up to etc etc... Ultimately, I see an AI software engineer powerful enough for a SME (someone who understands credit card payments processing, warehouse procedures, flight bookings, pork belly options trading etc) will simply be able to tell Devin's progeny in natural language what needs to be done. There will be some prompting for clarification, options, recommendations etc...but the software will be written and tested and improved by an AI. Of course, the next stage is to have AI become the SME...

Let’s Goooooo!!! Personally speaking these AIs have so much of a hard time with logic, as in processing complex task using language, even as top notch “language models”. I agree with you, they are great tools for small task but, they almost seem to echo chamber things, lose memory of instructions or have “short comings/ sightedness” in responses. Also if you don’t ask the right questions or if they don’t have the information (training data) in their corpus, then they can’t help you, like lack of original thought. Then we have an issue with some tech companies moral compass or scale of what they feel is ethical or not, or own personal ambitions, that leads to gatekeeping, censorship, or lack of open source, really allowing you to progress.. From my experience, learn to do things yourself. I’m happy for this field in science as someone who has made language models and is currently building the body or shell but they are far from replacing EVERYONE.. one last note.. Gov is trying so hard to control these things out of fear, lack of understanding, or simply money 🤑🤑🤑, for me it’s sickining, sad, and disgusting.. but I say this to say, we need a thorough understanding as humans the logic behind them to keep other humans from suppressing knowledge, creating a monopoly, and ultimately stifling potential of human advancement from using these tools, to find cures, or any other solution in life. ☮️ Thank you for the video!

Well one thing i have observed about computers and the tech industry in general as a CS graduate is that a lot of these technologies are just mere abstractions of each other. For example, many years ago, we had only machine or low level languages like assembly, C etc . That interact directly with the hardware but due to it's complexity, high level languages like C++, Python, JavaScript etc that were more user-friendly were introduced. Did it make the low level languages obsolete? No. It is just and abstraction of what really happens under the hood to better make it easier for people to code. We are at a point now that these high level languages are being abstracted(not replaced) using just English text prompt to build stuff thanks to AI. There will still be need for developers to build these AI models just like most OS and critical system softwares are written in C or some other low level languages. Just keep learning devs❤

  • @jeetray11

    @jeetray11

    Ай бұрын

It is not really how you are putting it. Yes machine or low level languages are literally gone from mainstream developer's responsibilities. The question is did the number of jobs go down because of that. No - because the high level languages and tools using developer jobs replaced those machine language developer roles. With time only productivity increased. I think saying productivity is increased is also wrong. We can build more complex programs faster with time with more modern tools. That is the pattern. So when AI assistants will be there, entry level or even senior level traditional software engineering jobs will be replaced by jobs requiring a different skill set. I am not sure exactly what those will be but perhaps 'imagination', specification developing engineer for AI, AI operators etc. etc. We would want to build software in a day that would take a year previously. But will there be customer for rapidly built, hugely complex and large software? I don't think so. We gotta test this out. My guts feeling says the AI stuff will bring some chaos and it might become a taboo.

I’m surprised to see so many computer, science professionals, and programmers, that leave out of the equationbasicconcepts that come from game theory. Because in this case, the vastly rapid development of new technologies within the AI real, make it un necessity to implement some game theory concept as a societyat large. whether we like it or not, this has already trigger where we can engage in an arms race or we can engage into cooperation policies. Truth be told this is so disruptive that society has started a change that has not been seen since the first industrial revolution. I believe we really need to start examining in depth the application of cooperation techniques from game theory within this context.

I'm curious. If companies fire people due to AI being so easy for a smaller group of pepole in a company to do the job, what is to stop the people who get fired from doing that same AI work for themselves? As for funding, get the AI to figure out where to find it or find crowdfunders. Also, what makes these companies who do fire people believe that the companies themselves won't be replaced either? Think of the new job as being a Creative Director or something along those lines. Think big and then ask AI how it can help you accomplish it.

We won’t understand its logic and reasoning, in fact current LLMs have black boxes which researchers cannot understand why they produce certain answers. Also, AI scientists have not solved the containment and alignment problem either. I am uncertain if a skynet scenario is brewing.

Devin is a trend into the future, it is not an immediate threat. But the days of having a robot that is human like (not == human) and that can do a lot of technical work are coming. I can imagine a case where I ask this 'future Devin or AI' to spit out a piping design for my project based on few specs that I provide and viola ... it will do it in a minute ... display it on a projector and print out the CAD and I am done .... almost a StarTrek scenario. Yes, a human licensed engineer is still needed (for now) to sign off on this 'future Devin or AI' piping design , but the fact is that I won't need most of the leg work engineers that currently do the prep work. Same for electrical, mechanical, construction, chemical, software, warehoude loaders, street sweeper ... you name it, a machine will take over where a machine can do the work faster and for less. We are not 100% there yet ... but we are creeping in that direction. Is this bad or good .... this is open to debat but we are certainly heading this way. Make no mistake, the social and economical fallout (good or bad) will be ennormous. Even today, there are too many folks doing work that can be easily done better by a machine and, I am certain they are feeling the pressure. Here is a simple something I did recently to prep my tax return .... I did it 2 ways ... via a chat with Chapgpt turbo 3.5 and I also used my trusted tax preparer of the past 15 years. Both produced good results except that Chapgpt turbo 3.5 was based on the 2021 tax bracket (I expected that).... but Chapgpt turbo 3.5 was clear enough to spit out the step by step claculations for me so that I could use to make 2024 adjustments as needed . Had I used GTP 4 instead of 3.5 .... then I would have been darn close. I did not even need to buy Turbo Tax or any other software pkgs. You tell me .... Do I still need a tax preparer or Turbo Tax when I have this 'future Devin or AI'. What happens to tax preparers .... SW engineers producing TuboTax ?..... I have no clue. May the FORCE be with us

This is mostly a hype. I also tried another similar thing called GPT Pilot. They are good for simple projects. But all these are merely assistants to software engineers. They can replace coding tasks. Get things done quicky. But they often make bad decisions, inefficient implementations. Ai systems needs guidance from human software engineers. Well, they can perform coding tasks may be 100 times faster than us. Well, that is a good thing. Companies will be able to develop new systems quickly. But most companies still run with legacy code. Huge systems with huge code bases with so many bandage solutions. It will be a while before Ai is able to understand all these things and be able to take decisions like a software engineer. But for new projects and fast code development, debugging etc. Ai can be an amazing assistant. Devin will be more of a hype than a replacement for human software engineers IMO

This is getting out of hand… they really need to put some sort of band on AI. Not a complete ban. But they should have a certain level to which normal consumers/businesses can make their AI based projects. I wouldn’t be surprised if people go on strike, because this is getting ridiculous , and I’m saying that as a software developer. Yeah it may seem cool now, till it replaces your job and now you’re stuck finding some other job in the field, or worse, you can’t find any. They already have a full powered AI restaurant. AI getting better is only making things worse. Please don’t sugar coat what is happening and just accept the fact people have/will be be replaced. Anyways great video Tiff , you’re the best ❤.

This may not replace software developers, but at the pace we are going now, a new technology is right around the corner that will replace software developers as a whole. So, I think everyone in software development should start thinking of their next career change because it’s right around the corner.

@@Ynerson9003 it’s not as simple as whether a robot can, or cannot replace a human in a job, in my opinion. We also have to take into consideration why a certain job exists and why it’s important to have a human in that role. A machine may be able to do a job, but it may not be wise to put a machine in place of a human. I don’t see software development being the kind of job where if you take out the human element you’re crossing some sort of redline. A machine will never be able to replace the billions of neurons and experience that humans have nor the instincts that humans have developed over thousands of years of evolution. To answer your question a machine could never replace a mother, a father, or a family. Everyone in those roles has a job to do.

With the very best will in the world, while likely true, I don't think "If AI replaces devs it'll replace many other jobs too" should be much consolation, for pretty obvious reasons (though fair enough, it _does_ suggest there's no real point in dropping CS for some other "knowledge job" subject). Sure, right now tools like Devin won't replace ALL software developers but put it this way, if you're currently on a CS degree i'm pretty sure you WILL NOT have a _career_ as a software developer in the sense we might've expected 10 years ago (i.e. the junior to senior pipeline as a dev/manager for your working life) _unless_ AI progress hits an unexpected brick wall in the near future. If not it seems entirely possible, even likely, that AI will be "human competent" within 10 years and while I get that if you're 20 that may sound like forever, it's obviously only about a quarter of your working life. So by all means don't stop learning and don't worry your way into a doom spiral but _do_ maybe spend some time thinking about how you can pivot _when_ it becomes necessary (if you have a knack for DIY for instance, maybe develop that too - I suspect we're still going to need plumbers long after "software developer" hits about the same level of human employment as e.g. "blacksmith" is at today).

I keep wondering why KZreadrs always deny that new AI technology will eventually take over our jobs. I once saw a KZreadr who claimed that the Nvidia CEO said that just to sell his product. Then I wrote to him, 'And what about you? You're also lying to people to keep your content going. When another AI comes after Devin, and it will, KZreadrs will say something else again. Every time a new AI emerges, I see how step by step the arguments of KZreadrs are refuted. I have unsubscribed from some KZreadrs because most of them are not objective, but always optimistic, and that annoyed me
