Turning Ben Reilly into a villain is a stupid idea. It was bad when they turn him into the Jackal, it bad now as Chasm. If they wanted an evil clone just revive Spidercide and make the story about him.

*WARNING* unpopular opinion: I like Jackal Ben, mostly because this is his first appearance as a villain and maybe he was quite charismatic for me (justify me also), but making him a villain immediately after fixing him is very, very strange, like it would be Chasm is a different character, I would have taken it normally. I don't understand Chasm's motivation, he is angry with his brother, but destroys New York. The creators could have come up with a better motivation for him and better portray him as a villain or anti-villain. WTF??? I also don't like that creators ruined Venom.

Weirdly enough, they did bring him back to his ‘90s default anti-Spidery version for this event. I’m not mad about it, though, because Al Ewing is writing Venom’s current series and he somehow makes this blatant character regression work in context, because Al Ewing is a fucking mad genius.

Personally, I think a way better name for this character would've been "Recluse." It's both thematically appropriate (Ben feels alone/isolated because of his lost memories/clone-based inferiority complex) and spider-themed! Like, the perfect choice was right there, and the writers whiffed it!

Kaine is easily my favorite spider clone (at least after they ruined Ben), it sucks they won't use him anymore. You he's the only spider to never have a symbiote, missed opportunity if you ask me. Imagine kaine with the toxin symbiote

@@xstation6445 Not quite true. During his first run as the replacement Spider-Man back in the 90s, Ben VERY BRIEFLY (forcibly) had the Carnage symbiote. If I remember right, it (very briefly) bonded with him in an attempt to kill him or something to that effect. Ben, in an attempt to contain the symbiote, forced/willed it to stay on himself while the two of them were locked into a cell at Ravencroft. His plan was to hold it there forever if necessary. It managed to escape to rejoin with Cletus Cassidy.

This is character assassination. Period. And I fucking hate it

They keep trying to turn Ben into Kain, and Kain into Ben. I would like to see a redemption arc for Kain and Ben where Kain walks him back from the edge and reminds him of who he was.

I love Ben. He was my favorite Spider-Man growing up. His hoodie costume is top five spider costumes for me. I hate what they're doing to him currently. Chasm is whatever name wise, but stop ruining Ben!

I don’t give a shit about the name, but the last thing Spider-Man needed was another villain/side-character whose costume was just a palette-swapped version of his own.

Nah the name has too much personal meaning for me. Like nothing about his suit or abilities screams Chasm which is how names stick and become iconic to me. Iron Man literally wears a suit of metal Spider-Man shoots webs and crawls on walls like a spider, but Ben "My name's Chasm because of the huge void inside my soul" is the the most emo thing they could possibly write 😅

I like the name, costume, idea, I just hate that it's Ben. Honestly it would make more sense for Peter to go full supervillain at this point as I hate how Marvel treats him and any good thing he gets is a prelude to some bigger disaster for the guy, I don't need him to be Iron man levels of rich and successful but give him a break or something lasting good that isnt just his Aunt May.

The sad return of Ben Reilly. The character was best left after he was killed off. His death had more weight, and added another layer to Spider-man’s tale.

I'm new to comics and I read nick Spencer's run to beyond to dark web. Woooo boy even I knew that Ben made no sense here 😂 His evil design is on point though. Love that.

Chasm is a good idea for a villain name. Nothing else about it is.

But that's just me

I mean if you're trying to pull the dude out of "the chasm" you'd consider not making the name a constant reminder for the dude that a piece of him is missing.

Very fitting name I guess considering the entire character gives me a chasm.

I wonder if they designed the costume first clapped then said "what do we call him?". Kind of feels like all the effort here was making a cool looking character for variants with no actual substance. And why Ben Reilly? Couldn't this have been a chance to use someone new?

It's not as clear-cut as most of Spidey's rogues gallery, but it's not a bad name: short & gives ominous implications. (I should probably read the story to see how it all plays out, tho.)

It feels so tired and predictable, a plot device in search of relevance to sell yet another run of books. At current prices, I'm not biting.

What really annoys me is that they have all these other spin off like silk, spider-women, spider-boy, 2099 etc And yet there’s so much they can do with Kaine and Ben. Like I don’t think anyone would object to Ben occasionally lending a hand, the two had a genuine brotherly bond in the 90s and now we’re supposed to believe that Pete finds him to be an annoyance? And even still, having Kaine would make things interesting as he is willing to do things Ben and Pete wouldn’t but at the same time he’s trying to find himself. These two clones wouldn’t overpopulate Peter’s world, they could be wonderful addition to Spider-man I mean DC has so many green lanterns popping up … marvel really is missing out big time

He should’ve actually been Kaine. Turning Ben evil is a bit of a stretch, but manipulating Kaine into fighting Peter is totally doable.

I only just started reading Spidey with the current Wells run, so I'm excited to be on the ground floor for this.

The name "Chasm" is so on the nose and edgy that it feels like a joke. How am I supposed to take this seriously when Ben suddenly wants to name his alter ego like a DeviantArt OC?
