Meet Adrian Dantley: The Harden-Melo HYBRID Of The 1980s
Спорт
Adrian Dantley is arguably the most underrated scorer in NBA history. He had some of the most ridiculously efficient seasons ever, but nowadays...he barely ever gets talked about. In his prime he had the playstyle of Carmelo Anthony, and the foul-drawing ability of James Harden. Hope you enjoy!

I think guys like Dantley's best role is probable as a sixth man. A walking bucket. A scoring machine who can keep you in the game while your starters are resting.

hes far to valuable to be on the bench, his game would be perfect for the late 90s and early 2000s when heavy ISO players dominated the league, AI for a example.

I had Rockets season tickets for floor seats under the basket in 1986, when the Jazz came to town. Dantley was injured and didn't play, but sat down a few rows behind us late in the 4th quarter. As he was walking to his seats, I thought it was him but wasn't sure. That's because this supposedly 6'5" dude was barely 6'3". But after turning around a couple of times to check, it was definitely that guy. My buddy, Rick, agreed it was him. And we both agreed Dantley was NOT 6'5". So add that to the other remarkable facts about "Teach", the smallest of the great NBA small forwards.

PoliticalGangster __ That's why I find it extremely amusing when these little kids today cry about James Harden getting free throws... I remember watching PRIME Dantley in the 80s in Utah... you couldn't guard this guy on isolation... the average defender that would match up against him would get fouled out before the 3rd quarter ended... he was very difficult to guard... and he was a GREAT scorer due to his high shooting attempts and his efficiency... Harden reminds of Dantley so much... only that Harden was a little more athletic, greater shooter from longer distances, and more skilled offensively due to his passing/play making... but in terms of strictly scoring and guarding difficulty... Harden and Dantley in their primes were the two most difficult wing scorers to defend in the modern NBA

Joe Dumars credits Dantley with teaching him how to be a professional in the nba & it was reported that 1 of his legs is significantly shorter than the other which is why he wore othotics in his shoes...
I disagree on his lack of play on defense...As a long time Pistons fan I remember his play in the 1988 Eastern Conference Finals against the Celtics as he and Dennis Rodman's combined defense shut down Larry Bird...check Basketball Reference Larry Bird Shot 35.1% from the field that series...Adrian Dantley average 37.0 minutes a game in that series (vs. Rodman's 15 minutes a game)...so "The Teacher's" defense was a bit underrated....Also take note of the 1987 Eastern Conf Semi Finals against the Atlanta Hawks...Dantley also helped keep Dominique Wilkins in check that series for %38.2 from the field....although Dantley was not a willing passer his free throw attempts were key to the Pistons defensive philosophy as him going to the line and converting at a high percentage allowed the Pistons to set their half court defense

AD has plenty of money but it's notoriously frugal. He kept much of his per diem money as a player. He only does it for the health insurance benefits
Part of Detroit's transition away from AD must have started when he got badly injured in the playoffs against Boston. It seemed like his Detroit teammates figured out then, and maybe other times, that they'd be okay without him. When he was healthy, it was hard for Boston to defend against him.
The mental picture I always have of AD was him at the free throw line. The stats confirm it.

AD was my hero! The very first youTube video I ever watched was AD schooling Kevin McHale. You point out a lot of supposed flaws in his game, but he was not on teams that allowed him to do anythig but score. You failed to mention his early career in which despite carrying his teams he was trading for very valuable assets many times. He was a part of trades that improved both hhis previous and new teams, from Buffalo to Indiana to The Lakers, to Utah to Detroit, Dantley was worth a lot. He was one of the long line of great players from DCs DeMatha High. Dantley was highly regarded by Red Auerbach. Imagine if he could have joined the Celtics as a rookie. In the right surroundings, AD would have a totally different career. If you think he would not have changed, remember Adrian built himself into the player he became. He was one of the first NBA players to effectively weight train and modify his diet. Dantley's accomplishments were during an era of outstanding small forwards: Bird, English, Dr J, Bernard King, Marques Johnson, Jamaal Wilkes; yet he was routinely guarded by power forwards 5-6 inches and 30 or 40 pounds heavier. Today's fans need to know about the forgotten players and teams of the late 70s and early 80s: Gus Williams and the 1977-78 Supersonics who went from 5-17 to the finals; the Championship Bobbys at small forward of that era: Jones, Gross, and Dandridge; and the pre 'the Shot' Cavs who were 5 and 0 against the Bulls before Jordan assasinated them in the womb. Keep up the great videos, Andy!
Wasn't until his 5th year before NBA introduced the 3-point line. A lot of players of that era didn't like the 3-point line. Dantley shot a few over the years, but only went 7 of 41. In Dantley's last year with the Jazz, he had rookie Karl Malone dropping 15 points as well as rookie John Stockton. Also had block leader Mark Eaton (3.5 BPG that year). Jazz were 3rd best defensive team that year, but their defense was near worst. Was still a few years before Stockton and Malone would dominate the game.

Yes, but he had an underrated DEADLY mid range J. Inside 17 feet, he could really shoot. With the step back, he gave himself clearance over taller, more athletic players.
Videos like this are exactly why I love Andy Hoops' channel. These deep, insightful analyses of unknown players, especially guys who should be much better known than they are. Great work Andy!
The Pistons made huge gains after acquiring Dantley. Before trading for him they had trouble getting out of the first round; but with him, they reached the Conference Finals in his first year and the NBA Finals in his second while posting more regular season wins.

Great vid Andy, plis make a video of Mark Aguirre, another great scorer of the 80's and tell your opinion why the Pistons won two rings with him and not with Dantley.
Bulls fan here....I LOVED AD's game. So serious and committed and really knew his craft and had great technique. He also took great care of himself. The 1988 Pistons should have won the Finals that year and he would've been a champ. Maybe he was mercurial, but that's all of us at times.
The 80's Utah Jazz was an incredible team if you see the names: Stockton, Malone, Griffith, Eaton and Dantley, if they would play together in a different era they should be champs. I mean just think about how The 90's Utah could be better with Eaton in the 97 and 98 finals, imagine with Darrell or with Adrian. Definiteley they were a talented team but the Laker were too dominant in the west.

Certainly has a spot at the all80s team
I always thought it was funny when he coached Carmelo Anthony in Denver. He pretty much turned the Anthony into a carbon copy of him as a player.
The thing is, Dantley was right. He was among the most efficient scorers of all time - it was entirely appropriate for him to have the ball a lot, and bashing him as a ball hog is at this point not really valid basketball strategy anymore. Imagine giving Luca or Giannis fewer than 15 shots per game. Well Dantley was a more efficient shooter that both of them in his era. Going by what we know now about basketball that we didn’t know then, if teams had given Dantley what he wanted their teams would have been better. And he’s also kind of right that Isiah Thomas is a con man.

Dantley is underrated also because his career was a bit unlucky, as he always found himself on the wrong team.. Which is something easier to happen if you don't help yourself with being a team player and working for the team. But still he was unlucky as well: for ex in Detroit he was one of the player fitting the least with the type of team he is playing in that I ever saw. Of course Isaiah is a well...dont wanna say dirty but..., and you have to do what he wants (and he is planning everything to go the way he wants, but without speaking openly..) but to say the truth, AD never fitted in that team... That team won with great attack from the backcourt and great defenders and sturdy players in the froncourt..
This dude is my neighbor
