Meet Adam Engström, the Montreal Canadiens' Most Underrated Prospect

Спорт

An in-depth look at how 20-year-old defenceman Adam Engström managed to land top-pair minutes on one of the best teams in the SHL, how he improved his game, and what Habs fans can expect from him.
The Swedish blue-liner currently has 11 points in 25 SHL games for Rögle BK in the SHL, a program most notably known for helping Moritz Seider unlock his game and become a difference-maker. Engström has taken huge strides over the past two years, and has become arguably the Canadiens' most underrated prospect.
Please remember to like and subscribe, and let me know how excited you are about Engström's potential!

He's really surprising considering he was drafted 92nd only a year ago. He was one of the best players during the Habs rookie camp alongside Hutson, Reinbacher and Tuch.

Looks promising. Engstrom, Reinbacher, Konyushkov, Hutson, Mailloux, Trudeau in the wings. Plus Barron, Struble, Xhekaj, Harris...super-deep crop of young D-men! Plus 2 good goalie prospects. Now all that's needed to complete this picture for a future powerhouse, is at least one gamebreaker forward prospect.

Hutson could be just that considering the fact that like makar, it’s just gonna feel like we have 4 forwards on the ice 😂. But yeah a Cooley wouldn’t hurt

@@user-ss1jb8cv6y Hutson could be THAT forward, too. And I don't think Cooley is that special. I think Slaf will be a much more valuable player when it's all said and done. Demidov would be nice...

Thats why you would use some of that prospect pool. And get yourself a somewhat good forward prospect! Because i dont mind being a team thats a factory of young d prospects, if we flip them for something really better that we need. Why not... Just imagine a good young forward prospect (cant think of any lol)

@@muizzzmehrii7714 I totally agree. Hughes is playing it smart. Trading from strength for guys like Dach and Newhook, for example. From there on, it's a numbers game and all it takes is for one of those players to breakout and become a star forward.

Hopefully he comes in the AHL next season and learns to play on a smaller ice. We saw what happened with Norlinder. Habs drafted him instead of Jordan Dumais so I hope Engstrom have success.

Loved it ! Great Analysis. The thing I found the most endearing with this group of D prospects is how potentially very complementary to each other they might be in a very near future. Next Summer Camp will be sooo interesting. I could see him on a pair with a more poised pace regulator RD like Kovacevic or Reinbacher to cover those little lapses and let him do his best on transitions. (Not too fond of the Lounge background music tho, as you have a very soothing voice already, but that doesn't take away from the content at all, it's just me being nitpicky)

Hughes should be patient with him... I've been thinking it would be wise to divide the responsibilities on the ice for top offensive centers, so that they don't have to play down low. So having a stopper role might be a great strategy... a second defensive center or an offensive defenseman on the ice to carry the puck up the ice or get the puck from that stretch pass into the neutral zone and carry it into the o-zone. Dump and chase hockey is no longer a viable strategy in the NHL. I can't see Hutson playing 20 minutes as a defenseman, but he can definitely play 15 minutes as a stopper. Possibly the same thing with Engstrom.

would you say his player profile and tools resembles matheson?

  • @galkanftw

I have a knack to follow along with the play and think about the next move.So what I see is another perimeter player that doesn't have the finish mindset once he gets near th enet. He often penetrates the shooting zone then wastes it by dropping a pass all the way back to the point or tries a rink wide pass of 30-40 feet. This is also hockey on Euro ice it is a larger surface giving players more tiem and space than they will get in the NHL. So what I see is a very average player that skates well and that is what buys his time and allows him to think longer but around the offensive net he doesn't have the coring IQ. I can't place him yet until I see more of his game on NHL ice and within MTL's terrible defensice zone play he would be under constant pressure but just maybe with his skating he could single handedly carry it out similar to Matheson.

The Swiss league is now the third best league after AHL and NHL, there was an article about it. It was surprising for me but I knew the KHL wasn't the league it used to be for obvious reasons... Reinbacher is where he needs to be while enjoying heaven's country! ☁️🏔☁️

I don't know that he is THAT underrated... i see a great skating ability and overall very good fundamentals but i'm not expecting a whole lot in terms of becoming a NHL caliber defenseman, we shall see.

Looks like somebody is gonna get traded eventually. They all cant play in the NHL. Harris Xhekaj Guhle Struble Hutson And now Engstrom Left D-side is soo stacked.

Harris is my bet since I'd be very surprised to see a top prospect trade happen because of Engstrom's current low value without NHL experience... Ghule, Matheson, Xhekaj, Struble and Hutson are to stay because of their size and talent and I expect Xhekaj to play right D when the team is ready for a push. I would be 0 surprised to see Engstrom traded as soon as he plays an AHL season tho since he's skinny and we've already got Hutson
