Meet 2 U.S. Citizens Detained at Airports: A Police Chief and a Lawyer Who Sued Trump Administration

democracynow.org - A growing number of U.S. citizens are sharing accounts of having been detained at airports across the country since the start of the Trump administration. Boston-based civil rights attorney Iván Espinoza-Madrigal says he was returning home on March 12 from a vacation in Portugal when he was detained at Boston’s Logan Airport. A day later, the former police chief of Greenville, North Carolina, Hassan Aden, says he was detained for over an hour by Customs and Border Protection agents when he was flying into New York City’s JFK International Airport after returning from visiting his mother in Paris. The two join other U.S. citizens, including a U.S. Olympic medalist, a NASA scientist and the son of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who have all been detained at airports across the country since the start of the Trump administration. For more, we’re speak with Iván Espinoza-Madrigal and Hassan Aden.

I was stopped by boarder patrol in Temecula as I exited a gas station and ask for identification by agents in spanish, I asked for their cause to detain and he failed to answer so I just kept walking. He asked if he could search my vehicle and I responded no thanks. As I was entering my vehicle I could hear his dispatch giving him my information. Be advised vehicle you stopped comes back registered to a police department I smiled and drove off. When I make traffic stops I tell the subjects driving the vehicle why I stopped them and treat them with respect never been charged with violating someone rights.

Yes. Let's call it how it is now. If you're rich enough you can do whatever you want and not be punished. If you are punished it's a slap on the wrist. The same crime by a poor person would land them in prison for life. The justice system has failed us and our government is failing us.

Kind of weird when all the people becoming citizens they oath to the flag and the constitution. Isn't that the same for everybody? Or do we have to invent a new kind of flag that id you base on the fact that you are not wealthy, rich, etc.? This administration has to leave, but not only this administration, also the poor politician mentality that do not understand that all citizens are created equal and have same rights, whether you are born in US or naturalize.

For decades, everyone was told that America is full of smart, open minded people, that the nation is so united, be proud of your country! Well, the reality is slightly different. I just hope that people would wake the fuck up! The biggest damage can be caused by arrogance and ignorance.

This is all about power - who has it, who hasn't, who wants it, and who feels powerless inside so works to achieve power. Read the U.S. University study about the students who were divided into inmates and guards. Absolutely shocking results, showing power does indeed corrupt. By the way, I am a Canadian, living near the Canada-U.S. border, and although I love to shop in the states, I wouldn't be caught dead entering the US now. I am a senior, no criminal record -haven't even had a parking ticket, not a drug-user, anarchist, and wouldn't carry a gun unless I had to defend my country and myself against Trumpists. But - I still fear how I could be treated by USB.

I’m all for it ma’am. We should band together work to curtail and stem the flood of non-White people to our country. They have absolutely no right to come here in the first place much less to come in, refuse to assimilate and then start demanding this and that. Luckily, the unending flow of third world sewage is ending. They (largely) have no respect for our cherished traditions, our Constitution or our flag. Why are we obligated to even listen to these people; send them ALL back. They are a corrosive force, tearing at the unity of our country. Diversity is not a strength, it is divisive. A mongrelized nation with no common language, no respect for the rule of law without a border is not a nation at all. My family’s roots go back to the founding and I’m proud of our heritage. I’m proud to be a White European! It’s late in the game and this is the only way we can hope to preserve the Country handed down to us. Our culture, our heritage and our language are all under direct threat. Please reconsider if you have any respect at all for the faces in your family portrait. Without action, your family will likely be mongrelized.

This has been the situation for all foreigners coming to the US for decades. I have repeatedly told my american friends and they have rarely believed how bad it actually is. I am talking about foreigners entering the US legally on a tourist visa. I am white and from Norway, I suspect it might be worse for coloured people from other countries. I have talked to people from a norwegian consulate in the US (this was about 10 years ago) who told me that it is a growing problem that norwegian citizens are detained at US airports up to a week, stripped of all their legal rights, not allowed to contact families or get legal help. I have no doubt that things have gotten worse with Trump at the wheel, but you are fooling yourselves if you think this is a new problem. The groundwork for a fascist empire was put down a long time ago. Blaming Trump now wont solve any problem, you have to look deeper.

He was an ass, and I think they might just be feeling more comfortable picking on people these days.

I travel a lot for international training purposes and things like these have happened with Bush's, Obama's, and Trump's administrations. I'll never forget one day when I handed over my passport to an immigration officer about 18 years ago and I said; "good Morning sir" and he replied to me by saying "Let's see if it's going to be a good morning for you" Even though I knew that the guy was rude and threatening I just ignored him, cooperated and he eventually let me go. I provide international training so understanding how the immigration/customs personnel and their system work is essential to make my experience more acceptable. Traveling a lot makes me suspicious to their eyes. So they always force me to show them contracts, business cards, training materials, receipts, etc. The sometimes interrogate me very firmly or rudely back and forth why I am traveling, who I'm traveling with, who did I meet abroad, details about my clients and corroborate what I say. They check how much money/goods I carry and so. It's endless they can legally do it and by law you are at their mercy... remember they are after illegal immigration, drug trafficking, money laundering, smuggling, terrorism, etc. therefore they are not going to be nice and courteous, actually in order to be effective as immigration/customs officers they have to be rude, inquisitive, authoritarian, very distrustful among others .Sorry... bad news for the general public but that's the way they catch bad guys.Be advised that they have the right to search your phones (yes you read right), to detain you for vetting purposes and if you resist because you feel bad, or try to apply your constitutional rights where they don't apply; you have now committed a felony, will be officially arrested and taken to court. WARNING when you are in the immigration/customs area you are not in the US, so your US constitutional rights don't apply there. So my advice is; "control yourselves, cooperate and if you ain't got no problem, they will eventually release you." It's not nice at all but there is nothing you can do about it.

@Anon Person My recount is about real experiences, the applicable law and how officers apply it at their discretion. But yeeessss... you may put yourself in a foolish situation by resisting and fighting against the law, the state and the immigration/customs officers. Please do it and then tell us how it went. Cause one thing is feeling dignified behind a keyboard and pretending to be brave to challenge the state; and another one is putting yourself in a nasty legal situation because you want to go against the system and its jurisprudence. I don't know but I learns in college that if we want to change the LAW; we vote, we put pressure on our reps and we demand the congress and the senate to make those changes. Your idealistic stance is not gonna do much in this case except getting you in trouble. But yeah... go ahead let the keyboard go and take some action.

@Anon Person Starting a rebuttal with the word SAD and claiming that debating is a waste of time because the counter narrative goes against your narrative shows subjectivity which is not a good way to conduct any debate. Please grow up, we need objective, factual, adult conversation here. Facts and law don't care about your feelings. When you say that "you were actually leading to what I said at the end" you assume that we have to somehow guess something you didn't even mentioned in first place. Well... If I had that skill I wouldn't be debating with you; instead I would be guessing the numbers of the next lottery draft. I don't understand the phrase connected to a word you used: "intebtiin" so I'm not gonna comment on that. Now... Where did I get the notion that you were suggesting resistance?? Well mayyyyybe because the person in the video was resisting the authority. then posting the event and you praised him while criticizing my position for contrasting what he did with how these situations are handled every day at the border and the legal frame connected to that. Now... your comment about public who don't have platforms to be heard is way off of our times. I might understand that some people are Technological Ignorant in some areas such as cognitive technology, augmented/virtual/mixed reality, the Internet-of-things, Machine learning, 5G, natural language processing, robotic process automation or any of the new disrupting technologies; but something basic like posting and watching videos on youtube is kind of an underestimation of peoples' capabilities.

It happened to me! I was traveling from Mexico to Washington state- I am blind blue eyed my name is German- first and last- and was in a wheelchair to boot- they took my passport- and "lost" it for an hour-they took funny looking pieces of tape and stuck on me, my luggage my clothing and stuck it into a machine- I have been traveling to and from Baja California Sur since I was 10 years old! I was born in Los Angeles- I am a DAR( daughter of the American revolution)! My great great grandfather fought alongside with George Washington for Petes sake! He is listed in the battles, he was wounded several times! I'm more American than apple pie! Errrr an hour- later I spoke to a family of 5 who also was traveling from Mexico and they said every time they come home they are detained! Errrrrrrr this is unamerican and starting to piss me off!

Egads, i am a white guy and have been selected for "additional screening" almost every time i go to the airport. I am not nor have ever been involved in an incident or been on a watch list or on a no fly list. Mostly its the circumstances of the ticket purchase itself, such as short round trips to foreign countries, last minute ticket purchases. So many reasons for doing it. They use the "random additional screening" as a cover for said screenings. To state the screenings are racially biased is ridiculous, but there may be some profiling involved. Deal with it or vote the policy makers out of office.

This happened to me in 2018 on a flight back to MIA from the Dominican Republic. I was momentarily detained and was told my passport was fake. I was born and raised in the US, and was told that my English name “didn’t match my phenotype”. The officer who questioned me looked like someone from an indigenous tribe in Mexico. The pot calling the kettle black. I told him “are you a US citizen? Are you impersonating an officer?”, I was let go but it was utterly dehumanizing.

The problem here is that the recruiting of personnel hasn't kept up with their training. I'm sure many of those employed are not past High School or their schools have passed them so as to meet government imposed standards to qualify for government grants. There are procedures in place to obtain TSA clearance ahead of flying. That's why many people find themselves on NO FLY lists. Its shoddy bureaucracy. Not something to call the Media on, unless you have an agenda. Not many of those doing the checking have left the shores of the US and eye anyone flying in from outside as suspicious. Like I said, its a lack of training and education. Geography in school these days is a thing of the past.

My legal Mexican friend with husband and 2 children drove their nice truck to Mexico to visit family. Inside Mexico10-15 minutes police pulled them over and put a gun to the dads temple demanding money. Both the kids were napping. Driving a nice vehicle with US tag makes you a target. With that experience, they were afraid to stay, so they turned around to drive back to Alabama. They remained in Mexico less than 45 minutes. Problems everywhere making life hard. Praying vetting in US accomplishes desired results and over soon. Illegal immigrants can't stay in Mexico.Their directed to US borders, or they must go from where they came. 💘 San Diego!

The last few times I travel outside the country, over 4 years ago, cbp officials were professional and made ne feel welcome. Respect to the few CBP who still do outstanding work for this country. Not sure this is just a Trump thing. I've traveled a lot over the last decade and a half, and the TSA and other agents have always been garbage, no matter the administration. I've been detained for an hour before, a friend of mine was detained in 2016 for 2 hours because he had a stopover in Dubai and the agents wanted to know why, and wouldn't take "It was just a 2 hour airport stoppover" for an answer. It's been like this of you travel frequently overseas since the whole post-9/11 security apparatus came into effect. If you don't fly often you might have gotten lucky and never experienced it, but if you travel enough this garbage will happen to you every once in a while.
