Although Meelo is an annoying goofball he is actually one of the strongest and most skilled airbenders there is, both inventing "Fartbending" and taking down multiple Chi-blockers (that even Korra struggled with) when he was only 5. He then went on to become an instructor at age 6 and was basically a master by the age of 9, which would probably make him the youngest airbending master ever. He is also an incredible artist, and wants to build a powerful airbender army (which has never existed, as the air nomads have always been peaceful).

Meelo was basically Aang and Bumi put together
