Meditation and the Science of Human Flourishing Workshop - Part 3

CCARE and Tergar Meditation Community held Meditation and the Science of Human Flourishing workshop followed by a Conversation on Compassion.
Can we cultivate well-being in the same way that we can train our bodies to be healthier and more resilient? If so, how might we use the practice of meditation to experience equanimity, to open our hearts fully to others, and to cultivate insight and wisdom? In this workshop, two world-renowned experts, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and Richard J. Davidson, PhD, shared their perspectives and insights on meditation and the cultivation of well-being. This workshop included teachings on simple meditation practices that help us to recognize and nurture the mind’s natural qualities of awareness, compassion, and wisdom, as well as discussions on the practice and science of self-transformation and the cultivation of well-being.

I would really like to know what Mr Rinpoche's opinion is of meditation music and chanting being a part of meditation.

I remember he mentioned this in his teaching (I was in that session and someone asked the same question), he said listening to music is a little bit different to listening to sound. He would not recommend that. My own understanding is that music brings you memories or some feelings and for beginners, it might not be a good way to cultivate your pure awareness. You could easily get lost in thoughts and beautiful imaginations when listening to those peaceful meditating music.

Music is sensorial pleasure, hence can become a hindrance in proper meditation of innate goodness or awareness, music or poems if created as homage to a guru or Buddha could be considered as guru yoga, like poems and songs from Milarepa, but that is too advanced. Music can help improve single pointed meditation, concentration, but nonetheless a distraction. I couldn’t grasp the idea at the beginning because I myself was a musician, after years of understanding and contemplation, I can make sense of it as sensorial pleasure but it can be turned into meditation when we cultivate the intention of benefiting others through it.

Please, is AWARENESS an acceptance of denials or the opposite of denial

Being aware means being aware of interdependence of all things, there’s no denial or acceptance as both are relative. If you accept you’re in denial you are aware that you were in denial, if you do not accept you’re in denial then you are aware that you’re not in denial, awareness is always there, wether you accept or deny, that fact that you’re even able to differentiate is awareness, as Mingyur Rinpochhe always says “thoughts are like clouds, awareness in like sky”.

Because your happiness is important for happiness and peacefulness of others. If you are happy, you generally tend to through your happiness on others and you are always potential of making people around you happy. If you are angry for example. You are not miserable only but you throw your misery on others around and you are potential of making others miserable. Therefore, you wish to be happy for the happiness of others. That is compassion.
