Meditation and the Science of Human Flourishing Workshop - Part 1

CCARE and Tergar Meditation Community held Meditation and the Science of Human Flourishing workshop followed by a Conversation on Compassion.
Can we cultivate well-being in the same way that we can train our bodies to be healthier and more resilient? If so, how might we use the practice of meditation to experience equanimity, to open our hearts fully to others, and to cultivate insight and wisdom? In this workshop, two world-renowned experts, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and Richard J. Davidson, PhD, shared their perspectives and insights on meditation and the cultivation of well-being. This workshop included teachings on simple meditation practices that help us to recognize and nurture the mind’s natural qualities of awareness, compassion, and wisdom, as well as discussions on the practice and science of self-transformation and the cultivation of well-being.

Three meditation technics: 1. body mind together; 2. just be aware of breath, gentle awareness;3 resting awareness without breath; no need to follow step by step; anything is ok. Thank you Rinpoche!

Meditation with this true Master is delight. I cannot find words to describe my devotion for this being. Before I met Yongey Mingyuir I was not believing any kind of devotion is authentic, I thought people adore some guru figures and this is some kind of tradition, because of cultural thing. But again and again I am so deeply touched by goodness of Mingyir Rinpoche, so my heart, my soul and every my breath is his. And yet his teaching is so simple and very loving and so authentic. I love him so much, he is my inspiration and my strength. I am very happy I found him - real treasure.

@@rohlay00 some time pass since then. Unortunetly devotion in my cease turned into suffering.I got into lonely mood, and I was crying a lot, because I culdn't be with Yongey. My theraphist told me, that I had trauma and being in love with people who are far away, with whom I cannot be was another repetition of my wound of abandonment. Subconsciously I was dreaming about people, loving people who were not in my life, who don't know about my existance. And this is living a life of an illusion. I am alone for all my life and beings in the internet were the only beings I got into them. This wasn't normal. I am more focused now on people who are around me, who could possibly want to be with me, here and now in actual life I am having. To stop dreaming about people who are far away, anavailable.

So how does science describe awareness? Is it an epiphenomenon of the human brain or is it a broad canvas on which the body (along with the brain) and mind (along with thoughts and emotions) appear? What is the position of modern science on the concept of awareness?

Happiness is not difficult to find. Just let it go. Do not attach to anything. If I were Tibetan , I would never fight back or against the Chinese invader. Just to give it away whatever they like. So , nobody would get kill. Nobody would not leave the Tibet. Do mindfulness. Practice you mind keep on the focus point that is our breathing in simple way of meditation by which Buddha became enlightenment. Enlightenment is not a difficult matter. As long as you can place your awareness at the stage of Neutral stage of reality and let it go [ make sure not attach to anything ] we will be at the stage of Heaven. Tibetan Buddhism is not the real teaching of Buddha. It is mixed up with Yoga , Hindu culture and Tibet's original culture of believing in Ghost like angles. Real Buddha teaching is in Tipitaka which is mostly practice in Siri Linka and Myanmar. Want to know more about real Buddha teaching , try to google search " Tipitaka " in English translation. If you worry about translation error, you may need to learn Pali language . You may also go to nearest Burmese/Myanmar monastery and can find out more as well. The main teaching of Buddha is 4 noble truth. 1. Suffering ; 2. Cause of Suffering [ i.e Attachment ] ; 3. Methods [ 8 practices to do ] to remove the attachment to our Ego ; 4. The state of NO suffering [ Nivanna - Heaven ]. ... Meditation is part of 3rd Noble truth. Beginner meditation - our awareness focus on the breathing process ; Advanced Meditation - focus on any mind comes up , just to aware it , not Judge on that though , not feeling on that thought ; but look at that thought's come and go nature [ ah-nate- sa ... Phit/Pyat ... born follow by death ] without attaching to our Ego. Remind ourselves, we , Ego , also not really exist . We are made up of organ , tissues , cells , particles. We, Ego, not also exist. Until this philosophy run automatic action on whatever thought process comes up , that is at the state of Enlightenment. [ which has also 4 stages ] .... need to know more ... google .. or e-mail me .. the Guru ... gandawinhein@gmail.com

Don't get me wrong, I love buddhism and these kind of monks. But I'd wish they stop using Science in their talks, just call it knowledge achieved through science. To know about stars & galaxies or the neurons and such does not mean you are in any way Scientific. You just know something. I'm pretty sure there are very few monks that actually are Scientists and apply the Scientific Method. A thought experiment is so different from a double-blind study with proper statistical analysis and conclusion.

i understand what you are saying but let me share some of my experiences as an American tibetan. I've been here in United States for almost 14 years and what i learned in America is, majority people in America are completely depend on science and media. So, it is very difficult to share our tibetan traditional experiences to the western mind. You can watch His Holiness the Dalai lama teachings and speeches in western world. He always emphasize science to the front because he knows that without touching the science, it is very difficult to teach the western mind about Tibetan buddhism. Let me tell a short story. When Buddha was enlightened, many disciple requested him to give teaching. But Buddha found that teaching was very tough and high level according the public mind set, so he created his teaching according to the public and disciple mind set. So, i think Mingyur Rinpoche is very smart because he recognize the audience mentality. Just sharing! no offend! May buddhist wisdom flourish all over the world for the benefit of all sentient beings. www.flamesofbodhichitta.com
