@@GudeaTW Another good things in this game are civil war, rebel nations more organized and threathy than med2 and of course re-emerging factions. In a good remastered they need to fix bugs in campaign and battle for first, then fix crashes and make it more stable in performance and make it work well in Newer computers, improve the graphics with 3D unit models and environments, more better diplomacy with some more features and options, Improve camera and controls and expand the moddability with more faction, units and other limits enhanced compared to original hardcodding with the possibility to modify map etc. and also modern sieges like in Attila and newer games, improve the vices and virtues mechanic with a better overhaul with a system more similar to medieval 2 and retinues, add possibility to have seasons like shogun 1, and last thing fix the naval battles system and overhaul the navy mechanics as the time the armies need to go between a place and the other in a certain amount of time, because going from London to Cairo in 1 turn is stupid, unless you have modern carracks... or even make them possible to play naval battles manually! And as a bonus I would like a multi-player campaign. This is what I would like to see. And you?? Give me a whislist of what you would like to see okay?

I agree, I love the original Medieval soundtrack. The campaign map music is highly atmospheric. I remember when I first played the game eons ago I just sat there for several minutes just listening to it. It really seems to embody something about the era for me. I prefer it by far to the campaign map music of Medieval II (both games have great battle music). It was such a shame that they didn't add the different starting periods into Medieval II as well. I would've loved to play a late campaign in the 15th century. Although I really enjoy Medieval II, I think that the original blows it out of the water in terms of aesthetics & atmosphere. It's gritty and moody, while Medieval II feels more like a Hollywoodized pop culture take on the era.

One big thing about Medieval TW 1 is that the campaign map AI was "challenging" in the sense that due to the map being risiko-style it was far easier for the AI to control and move armies around. For example, I remember playing as Spain and getting invaded by sea by a huge Hungarian army. And I recall that when Rome I came out, I was disappointed by how less challenging the AI was compared to Med 1 in that regard.

The one thing I've always liked about Shogun 1 and Medieval 1, is something that a lot of people don't actually like. The Risk style map, and I like it precisely because the campaign AI has an easier time of dealing with it compared to the 3D move anywhere campaign map. The AI seems to be able to actually protect themselves with the Risk style map. They might not necessarily win the battle, but their attacking and defensive decisions make a lot more sense with it. I imagine it's because there's less decisions for the AI to make on where to move, it ends up making smarter ones.

I recall the AI in Medieval TW putting more effort into preserving its army and maneuvering around onto more advantageous terrain or avoiding engaging my army when a little outmatched and outright retreating when completely outmatched after a little bit. It felt that I was fighting an opposing army instead of a horde of lemmings from time to time due to having a seeming degree of self preservation. It also made me understand some of the behaviors of battle AI in future total wars, mainly why it appears to just rush towards you or waits in one spot. Chasing an opposing army around the map and having them retreat more times than I could rattle my sword at is annoying.

It's really nice to see you cover MTW! Personally I've been covering Shogun 1 exclusively on my channel for a year now and I've been enjoying the heck out of it! I think you really hit the nail on the head regarding the Era's campaigns. It's something that was also included in the Mongol Expansion for STW and I believe that was the primary inspiration for the Eras inclusion in MTW. Frankly, I believe the Eras campaigns were one of the greatest ideas that CA had come across and forgotten about until finally "remembering" in time for Three Kingdoms. Because in some ways the 3K DLC are simply others versions of Eras campaigns. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of your content featuring MTW and I'm also really looking forward to covering it on my own channel as well at some point ^^

@@MsSirAndy Hey Diego! The way I view a remaster is that it should update the interface, controls and any remaining bugs/compatibility issues while still keeping the core gameplay intact. So quite frankly I think of lot of it stays the same, I think I would still find the game quite playable but I do realize that I'm quite biased because I've literally only played STW for the last year and a half haha. I just think that to change an entire mechanic like diplomacy is just asking way too much from the remaster team. Also I feel like the battlefield sprites are an integral part of the battle stat balancing between units. For example, the fact the it's difficult the cycle charge cavalry because the sprites don't have a real dynamic collision physics implemented makes those tactical decisions have more weight. It's a part of the game that is challenging for the right reasons in my opinion. There are other possible tweaks to certain features that I would consider. The Pope can make playing as a Catholic faction to be somewhat tedious so it might be worth while to find other ways/options of playing around the Pope restrictions. Also I think the GA point systems can be tweaked so that certain factions have more than two options to collect points (conquest/homelands). So I was just going to link the video/podcast that I did with Brought to Bear and I just realized that you've already commented/watched that video ^^lol But for anyone else whose reading these comments who would like to watch a good old fashioned chit chat about the legacy of STW and a possible remaster check out Bears channel where he and I and other youtubers do a lot of talking about Total War^^ kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmilzM-Oiq7XZ7A.html

Your review is spot on. This game made me passionate about history and ultimately why I studied it at university. You're on point on about the grittiness, it just seemed to capture the true spirit of medieval times. But the music, oh the music. For me, the campaign music where you have the wind whistling with the gentle choir singing, it just transports me back to playing hours of this game with my dad. I hope they DON'T remaster it, selfishly because for me I have so many happy memories of this as a child and I don't want those ruined by a poorly remastered version (imo how I find Rome remaster) I think it should remain for all of us as a happy memory of times gone past and what truly opened up the Total War franchise

Thanks for this, Gudea. Like you, this was my first Total War game. Despite its graphical limitations, it is still the most immersive for me. Each campaign truly tells a story, rife with character arcs and unexpected twists . I personally prefer the board-game markers to the animated troop markers of later games. Much less hokey. Add some mods such as XL and Redux, and this game attains the pinnacle of Total War strategy. EDIT: I should add that there are still mods being worked on as of my writing this. A truly rare phenomenon for a nearly 20 year old game! Also, the map certainly is moddable, just not easily. Check out Ancient: Total War for proof!

I would definitely pay for a remastered version. Thank you for your video. You mentioned factions and scripted events, but did that speak of them in detail. The game is 20 years old, it’s not like you’re spoiling anything. There were a number of first time events for me in this game, which were a lot of fun. The first time I was excommunicated. The first time the pope called for Catholic nations to invade mine. The first time my empire was carved in half because of a rebellion. The first time a jihad was called for my territory. The first time I inherited land, when an ally was killed. The first time a defeated enemy reappeared. The first time the Mongols invaded Europe. The first time an allied crusade stripped my armies of my finest troops. I love the feeling of the mechanic of the papacy. I feel like I am always being used. I feel like I am always trying to use them in return. I love the religion aspect to the game as well. As the turks, the thing I desire most is peace with Egypt. And that’s the last thing I can ever get.

While I do believe Med2 is the better game gameplay-wise (despite lacking some features from M1 like Civil Wars), for me, Med 1 just has more of that elusive "soul" that we all talk about and long for in games. That said, it's just too dated for me to go back to. I second your call for a remaster!

Medieval 1 is epic and deserves more praise! I agree that right now, the controls and look are too dated. If we got a straight remaster that upped the resolution and modernized the controls, I'd be super happy and I think a lot of those who grew up with RTW or Med 2 might appreciate the innovations of Medieval 1 a bit more. I also agree about Medieval 2 being better in general but lacking features - the lack of some of these critical features made me really angry about the release of Medieval 2 quite a bit back in the day! Good review! Every now and then, this game pops into my mind. And gradually the following conclusion has taken form: A game doesn't "need" fancy graphics. It can certainly be be nice to have them, but it's not necessary per se. Just like a book has no graphics at all - it's all just in your mind - a holistically well made game, can give you a similar experience as reading a great book. In a bad game, you immediately get annoyed with bad graphics. But in a good game, your mind tends to fill out the gaps. I remember how in my mind, the misty and atmospheric vibe of this game was like a canvas for my subconscious to paint, and make come alive. And of course, the effect of that menu music (plus the barely visible loop behind it) is almost like traveling through some kind of portal (interesting how much can be affected by that simple menu). However: Lastly, I also do believe that the first game one plays in a given series tends to set one's standard. For someone who first plays a game with better graphics, I think it is far harder to appreciate an earlier more gritty installment.

Thank you so much for this review. Almost everyone only talks about how Med 1 was just good for it's time but outdated compared to other TW games but I like you always loved and considered it one of my favorites if not THE Favorite for the reason you stated. Yeah the controls for the battles are the most outdated but despite that I always enjoyed them for their more slow and methodical pace and how you really needed to take advantages and disadvantages more seriously than in other titles in the series. The 2D art and Risk style map only appealed to me more and I loved so many of the features like titles and every unit having a captain. It made them feel more real to me how even a unit of peasants can have a good captain that you would want to make a Duke or Lord of a province and felt more immersive for the time frame than it's sequel did. The Atmosphere and Music are always at the top of my list and you are 100% absolutely goddamn right that Cathedral of Doom is the best Menu theme in TW history and I'll add one of the best Menu themes of all time. Shit always gives me goosebumps when it starts. But while I think the first one did a better job of fitting the era I still love Med 2 just as much as Med 1 even outside of mods. Objectively Med 1 is better because it is a lot more well put together with it's features and atmosphere but I still have more hours in Med 2 than any game I ever played because there is just so much content and fun in it especially with the Kingdoms expansions that help it cover so much more time and scope than Med 1 did. It's battles may have worse AI and be more unbalanced but the engine they use always looks good to me even after all these years less for the graphics and more the art style and the way units move and behave thanks to the collision and weight they have along with the kill animations never fails to give me a good time. Basically Med 1 is for me enjoying more tactical battles from afar and Med 2 is more for just having fun cinematic battles to watch. Both are great with Med 2's being like a nice and friendly fast food joint and Med 1 being a fine dining restaurant. But for the love of god I never want to look at Med 1's princess portraits again, those things looked hideous and like nightmare fuel. Anyway good review 10/10.

The og shogun, med 1 and rome were all the original team. Med 2 started to lose the original ca team. By the time sega officially took over most of the og ca team was gone or on the way out and that's why modern tw is so simple, easy to play and popular. Og tw was a chess match. Modern tw is checkers. I still have my old shogun total war box I bought from EB games back in the day as a late teenager. I've played pretty much every single tw since then. The originals and maybe empire/rome 2 are still my favorites. Shogun 2 had the great warlord mp option that ca completely abandoned... Warhammer is great and what they did with magic and flying units was awesome, but the later games seem to have lost alot of depth. Med 2 included. Many great ideas have been introduced in a tw title and then get forgotten in the aim of "streamlining" or making tw easier to play for the masses.

Another good thing are civil war and re-emerging factions. @@GudeaTW me too. I was hugely disappointed by the way the Byzantines were depicted in M2TW compared to MTW. The faction start position was completely wrong, the faction description made them sound weak, and even the units looked like old men or barbarians. It was a huge let down. The Middle East region was just horrible in M2TW. Venice was ridiculously OP. It was a huge mess. Medieval 2 only became truly the greatest thanks to mods like Broken Crescent, which added factions like Armenia, Georgia, the Abbasid Caliphate, the Zengids, and so on. The original Medieval Total War was indeed better than M2TW at release, in terms of historical immersion. Thanks for making this video :)

I don't especially like the "dark medieval" atmosphere, partly because it's a cliche, and partly becaue it furthers the monty python image of the middle ages as a time when everyone was covered in mud, wearing different shades of brown clothes, while somehow being more unfree than roman slaves. The apocalyptic theme in Attila TW is very cool and appropriate tho.

Eh you can't say the "dark Medieval" feel in Med 1 is inaccurate than go and say the "apocalyptic" feel in Attila is appropriate in the same sentence because both are in the end inaccurate. It was not apocalyptic when Rome fell in the west, it was actually more depressingly underwhelming as the last Emperor just meekly let the Gothic tribes push him out of power as they took over.

The campaign map has "aged poorly." My guy, it's aged like fine wine! I respect your love for MTW1 but the campaign map is one of the MOST nostalgic features of this title. You feel like a ruler sliding your troops across a strategy board. Really, this campaign map a unrealistic one (who cares about that) is one other games should have used and improved on. Not endless "realistic maps" with boring terrain features that barely impact gameplay at all besides making your armies march for more turns. Also, and most importantly, the MTW1 campaign's map is CLEAN. It's honestly a work of art. That is all.

@Gudea TW Its not that this game wasn't good - but the campaign is so much worse than Rome / Medieval 2 that even if it had other things going - the game is far below in scale for me because of it. Sure some people are in TW only for the battles, but TW was always a game that combined a battle and campaign connection and they developed both and in the campaign aspect the jump from this to Rome was so huge that I won't even bother describing it. This is also why I judge the newer TW games so harshly (except 3K which is a mix) cause the campaign aspect is pretty bad in these games.

  • @GudeaTW

    @GudeaTW

I disagree - I find the campaign here to be a great experience while the battles are rather clunky (mostly due to dated controls).

@@GudeaTW I am not saying the campaign didn't had any charm or unique features - I am saying the campaign is far behind technologically and as a result gameplay wise strategically far inferior to the Rome 1 campaign. The ability to use army groups to flank around enemy armies and attack from different directions (something that is pretty much gone in newer TW games). The campaign to battle simulation - again something that most newer TW has is also good which allowed the player to chose what approximatly his battle type/location. The fog of war and tower building and agent using to gather intel. The population mechanic and how it worked and so much more ... Again the gap is to large, its not that it is inherently bad desgin the board game style - but it was limiting the strategic depth that is possible to achieve with more complex systems.

Never played med1 as I started with Rome. Rome blew my mind at the time. Med2 is regarded as the best because of mods and being the latest with the old mechanics/engine - but without mods I can see why you'd rank it down. Vanilla med2 is rubbish compared to its mods. How do pikes fair in med1? In med2 Scotland needed the mods because pikes played terribly in vanilla even from the front.
