    I'm curious about your decision not to wear the belt and scabbard for the camera. It's interesting to see how high swords/belts sit on the hips and waist. Also, it would be nice to see the angle and how easily it can be drawn from the scabbard given the way it will naturally rest. I like your vids though.

    Great video! Very informative. Would this sword hold up if I were just to swing it around and chop water bottles? I had bought a sword in the past and simply cutting a thin stick broke it. Thanks for the information.

    I too just got this sword and I was also unhappy with the separation between the handle and the blade, same with the leather ring on the sheath it is also very heavy on the blade. All in all I do like it because I too like Templar’s. They can’t all be perfect but it was a little too pricey. I would suggest if u are not that into Templar’s a nice functional arming sword would be the way to go. I may eventually grab another more functional arming sword but my next one will be a Viking sword.

    I really like your cinematography skills with the slider your use of the Parallax effect you did with the pommel and the tapestry in the background was outstanding! However your slider and pan technique is not as smooth as it should be. Try shooting your slider and panning footage in 60fps because makes everything so much smoother. Keep it up! And nice sword review. You're the only person I see with this much professionalism to the cinematography in their sword review videos.

  • @kuribo1
    @kuribo18 жыл бұрын

    I would have given personally a four out of five. You are spot on with the not needing the sheath and the belt adding to the price. In my mind though having destroyed a metal filing cabinet with this specific blade I know without a shadow of a doubt it will handle the stress and abuse. Great on the thrust does not penetrate deep but does not buckle due to the blade thickness and cuts hard. The peened pommel never moved it is still solid. The thing that did get tweeked was the wire wrapped handle uncoiled or loosened so I have long since done away and used a braided leather cord. Henceforth the four out of five, only knocking it for the price point having included an unneeded belt sheath combo.

    +kuribo1 I was wanting to get a sword and was undecided on the Accolade or this one from KultOfAthena: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=DSA1370BKS&name=Darksword+Scimitar+%2D++Black+with+integrated+Scabbard+Belt I want a real sword that could be relied on if you ever needed it. And after the review I am a bit skeptical to it's durability. But you said it destroyed a metal filing cabinet? Would you say it is designed for heavy steel on steel contact then?

  • @kuribo1

    @kuribo1

    8 жыл бұрын

    +David Webb perhaps destroyed is too descriptive of a word. I should say it bit into and penetrated the filing cabinet walls with little difficulty. It is in the case with this specific blade built strong enough to handle that with no structural issues. Now blade on blade contact is a whole different beast. of course you could do it but you would be greatly reducing the life span. Ruining the edge, putting great torque on the tang and shoulders of the blade etc. You could but I would not recommend it. It is not built like a waster.

    Yes there are actually a few ways to wear, it. A video on their website was one way on the waist. But it can also be worn lower off the waist and on the upper thigh. Either way the belt design allows for the sword to be a little out of the way of you arms and at enough of an angle that it neither sticks out, or is straight up and down.

    Thanks for the review, very informative and goes over exactly what i was looking for in a review that i couldn't find on MRL or Windlass. My hubby is fascinated by both history and specifically the Templars. We've recently gotten into playing D&D and are planning on going to the local Renaissance fair this fall; and we'll he's mentioned and started looking at swords. I decided that as a birthday/christmas gift I'd get him a sword this year and decided to research swords rather than going for "cheap and good looking". Knowing my Hubby, looks and functionality shoudl go hand and hand, as i know that he wont be able to resist taking a sword out in the yard and giving it a trial run XD The look itself is perfect, its plain enough to represent the humbleness that the Templars lived, but ornate enough to hit on all of the recognizable associations to the organization. Are there any other Templar sword you might recommend, that look good enough for display but also retain functionality? I like this sword, but i'm still shopping around before settling on a purchase and have plenty of time before December XD

  • @medievalreview

    @medievalreview

    8 жыл бұрын

    The Answer to this is hard since price range plays a lot into it. I think for a unique and somewhat ornate sword, The Accolade is a great choice. but you can also get time period specific "crusaders" swords, but they aren't likely to find the same balance of aesthetics and functionality. If say you should just browse KultofAthena.com and see what is out there.

    +likeicare2111 If he wants to use it, I'd maybe not go for this one, its overly heavy and there are cheaper options out there that are still visually pleasing, but handle much better, however if you want a nice looking sword then go with this one.

    Jared Kirk I suspect the reason this feels blade heavy is because it has virtually non-existent distal taper. According to your stats, it loses only 0.1mm from base to tip. From what I know, no Windlass swords are made with distal taper, and in my opinion this is what will always keep them from handling and performing correctly.

  • @conall7030

    @conall7030

    I prefer lesser distal tapers because they give a more solid heavy swing. I can't speak for everyone though, I just know I have difficulty swinging my friend's blade properly because the weight doesn't feel as evenly distributed with a distal taper.

It has to have a detachable pommel though, so I can practice ending opponents rightly :P

    My thoughts in seeing the belt and scabbard in your video Would be that they aren't even necessary for this period I would replace that in a heartbeat and I would not wear it anywhere until I had replaced it. It looks cheap and I think the gap around the crossguard on the crossguard really has always bugged me. I have a friend that I would have make this sword and he would charge me somewhere probably between $1200-1400. I would have to wait longer probably over a year but I guarantee I would be happier with the scabbard the belt and the sword. And he would include all the bells and whistles that are on this 1 if I asked him to. I think what they wanted to do was to make a sword that lived up to 2 different standards. One decorative and 1 functional.. My question is whether they succeeded succeeded in functionality already and I would have to put it in my hand for a while to see what I thought

    The guard is 10", The widths on arming swords can vary a bit, but they tend to be roughly between 8 to 12 inches. I'm not entirely sure how reflective of historical pieces that is, but tends to be the unspoken rule.

    There is no such thing as typical, but I'd say that they may average a bit wider than arming swords. Though they can have the same widths as arming sword. A lot of guard widths tend to be in proportion of some kind to overall hilt and sword dimensions. Peter Johnsson has some interesting information on this out there with his sword geometry research.

    The function of the belt can be under appreciated. The belt is performing three tasks. The belt needs to looks worthy of a grand master, accommodate the wieght of the sword and assist in reducing the stress of wearing chainmail.

    Very well done. I give this review a 4 out of 5 though just because it is very distracting watching you read notes from off camera. Nice review. I also like Templars and have had my eye on this sword for a while but have been hesitant to pull the trigger on it. It always looks a little too ceremonial for a sword that a Templar would actually carry. One that I am trying to talk myself into getting is the Arn Sword by Albion. To me it's more like what I would imagine a Templar carrying. The only thing that keeps me from getting it is the statement by Albion "Please note: Film Swords recreations are NOT intended for use as a weapon". Do you have any experience with it? I'm not sure why they would make this statement being that it's made from good steel, is peened, sold sharp and seems to be built just like any other Albion sword. Any thoughts? filmswords.com/arn/arn-sword.htm

    Called them and talked to Mike. He said because it's a licensed replica they have to put that for legal reasons. He said that it's the same quality as all of their products and that it's fully functional. They would honor their standard warranty as long as I didn't beat it against a tree. It is ordered with a 6 month wait. Really looking forward to it.

    Alright everyone ... consider this , does this guy look like someone you would want to be going into battle with ? This guy ? REALLY ? The one who was concerned of the patina on your belt stars . This guy will run from the field shitting himself till someone takes mercy and cuts him down. I have purchased this sword and considerate it to be one of my most valved possessions . At the time I requested it to be as sharp on as possible . And it was . Very . Holding this weapon in your hand ,trying to imagine the brutality of those times is unimaginable . There was blood and shit ,piss puke ,and that was before the two sides met. They must of been so scared ....

    OK I've been watching a bunch of these episodes and besides finding them very entertaining there's one thing I have to ask about; is the image behind the title card meant to be a bull(or yack)farting???? Seriously, that's what that image seems to be to my eyes. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's why I'm asking.

    Doesn't these "fancy" Templar swords go against the templar philosophy? Wouldn’t they buy the simplest sword, but one that was functional and with optimal balance? This kind of sword does not paint a picture of Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici (The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon).

    And if so they had money. They had money to throw at a sword maker to give them something special. Do you think they then would be satisfied with a bad casted pomel? Did they even do etching of the blade? The Ulfberth didn't have etching but the letters was made in the casting. And that I 100% more tasty. Point is, this sheep looking Templar Swords doesn't look good. Yeah, this is "battle ready", but that doesn't say it is a good sword. And it still looks awful. I love Templars. And that's why I have a Sergeant costume. Most of them were sergeant. You could newer ever be a Knight. Even if you won a billion in the lottery. You would be a sergeant with brown/black outfit. This glorification of Knight Templars this sword is representation is destroying the real history of the Templar. They were Monks. If the pope said jump, they would jump without hesitation. And besides that. KTI is charging double the price that Kult of Athena is charging for thus sword. Good review tho. And this is somewhat that i agree with it. If you love the this stuff, it's ok for you.

    This is the worst sword I ever bought - it is OK for display - but it tarnishes easily and it won't take a good polish on the cross-guard and pommel - the coins in the pommel are a problem - if you polish them the plating comes off almost instantly and that is using a mild silver polish - at first i thought replacing the coins would not be too big a problem as they are easily available on eBay but the coins used for the sword are larger than what is available .All in all I like the blade but the rest I could lose .

  • @mikecaine3643

    Hello - Yes if you use polish to clean tarnish off the coins - the plating is so thin - it comes off and your left with a coppery finish- I used a silver polish and that is very mild compared to a 'normal' metal polish -this also happens to the cross-guard - the blade is fine .

    I can confirm I've had this problem as well. As for any kind of practical use, this thing handles like a brick. However if you like the aesthetic then buy it for a wall hanger, but its not a sword which handles well at all.
