Medieval Knight's Armour in Grand Duchy of Lithuania & Folk Song | LDK karys & sutartinė

Музыка

Mail & plate armour and clothing of a warrior from the 14th century Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Magnus Ducatus Lituaniae). In the recording you can hear one of the traditional variants of an ancient war song that women used to sing while biding farewell to their brothers, sons, husbands when they would ride off to war. The lines about Riga are more recent additions which started featuring in Lithuanian folk songs around the time of Salaspils' Battle (also known as the Battle of Kircholm) when Latvians together with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania won against a much better armed Swedish invaders despite of not having received any help from the Polish Crown.
Lyrics in English:
A brother will ride off, sodauto
To Riga town, sodauto
- What will you, dear brother, sodauto.
What will you bring me back, brother, sodauto.
From Riga town, sodauto.
- I will bring you back, sodauto.
A precious ring of gold, sodauto.
Refrain:
A little bee in the garden, sage's wavering, sodauto
Žodžiai:
Išjos brolutėlis, sodauto.
Į Rygužėlę, sodauto.
Kų man broliukas, sodauto.
Kų man parneši, sodauto.
Iš Rygužėlės, sodauto.
Aš tau parnešiu, sodauto.
Aukso žiedelį, sodauto.
Priedainis:
Sodi bitėla, šalavijo lingėla, sodauto.

You're so wrong, Rygor. Take a look at a description of the Battle of Kircholm by its contemporaries: www.mab.lt/paveldas/MAB01/160001/164971.pdf In the fourth line of page 63 it says that Lithuanians cried "Muški!" during the battle and goes on to explain that this means "beat them/kill them" in their language. This word still means the same in contemporary Lithuanian language, this goes on to show that ethnic Lithuanian warriors (lietuviai) were in the majority.

Im sorry i just read it again and translated in Latin, It does not say that the Lithuanians said Muskit, It says in line 3 that the soldiers pulled Muskets, And he believes in the Language of Lithuanians it is called Mufzki, Im sorry i am a nationalist Lithuanian myself, But i cannot stand it when the truth is being covered. in the Belarussian and Lithuanian Languages respectively Muskets where referred to as Muzki and Muskietai but i would say this was more likely the Belarussians.

+Беларуская рэчаіснасць It's actually from the opposite side of Lithuania than Samogitia is. See, "Samogitia" or "Žemaitija" is (and always was) only in Western Lithuania, they talk in a very distinct dialect there and their traditional folk songs are almost all heterophonic, you can listen to a sample of it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqGArpanqqeofso.htmlm16s Samogitians do not sing the kind of ancient polyphonic chants that you can hear in this video, this chant is from Eastern Lithuania - Aukštaitija, or to be more exact - from the surroundings of Kupiškis town.

No, most GDL documents were not written in church Russian (Belorussian didn't exist at that time), a lot of them were, but most were written in Polish, when Russian and then Latin. So? Tell me why almost all documents in medieval Europe were written in Latin? Europeans were Romans? Why mongol documents in China were written in Chinese? If you don't understand how written texts were used in middle ages better don't show your stupidity. And the question - when rebellion started against Russian empire in 1795 there was a proclamation written by leaders of the rebellion to citizens of the republic of both nations. In what languages that text was written?
