Medieval Baghdad - Greatest City In The World

The first nucleus of the city of Baghdad was the “Round City” (Madinat al-Salam) founded by the Abbasid caliph al- Mansur in 762 AD and completed in 766 AD on the west bank of the Tigris in a strategic location in the middle of Mesopotamia.
The city, known as ‘the Round City’, was built as two large semicircles with a mosque at the centre and housed the caliph’s palace, libraries, government and military buildings. It also contained parks, gardens, squares and wide avenues.
Residential areas for all but the most important people, markets and businesses were built outside the city walls.
Until its destruction by the Mongols in 1258, Baghdad was a world centre of culture and learning. This period is sometimes known as the Golden Age of Islam.
It is estimated that during the period c900-1200 the population of Baghdad reached between 1,200,000 and 2,000,000 people.
The House of Wisdom housed a library and attracted scholars from around the world who translated texts from the classical world into Arabic. Much ancient knowledge was preserved and the development of Islamic theology, philosophy, science and medicine was stimulated.

    Baghdad nowdays are like completely different city, no remaining of older circular wall ever survived. The only parts that still exist are probably the foundation beneath the ground. But according to some iraqis commenters in other videos, there are some building from 12th century that are still there, standing and well. But I think many archeologists should really need to give their attention on the much more larger medieval city named Samarra that served as Abbasid second capital. A city of 5 km (3+ sq mi) wide and 16 km (10 sq mi) long. With the Caliphate Palace each had more than 1000 m (3000+ ft) long and another 1000 m (3000+ ft) wide respectedly, that was even bigger than forbidden city of China. Though impressive that might be, the site it self currently are in a very bad shape and in a bring of collapsed. Albeit many historical buildings are still there, but they are only cover far less than 5 % of the originals. In short, the site is really need to be protected at all cost and reconstructed ASAP before they are gone forever. The first time i read the fact about this city, my mind was blown away that even my obsession on finding the original shape of baghdad was collapsed in an instant. I meant the city of that size was pretty much a MONSTER size in the context of medieval world. And i think it's pretty much in the same league as the city of Angkor from Cambodia.

    He's the problem. It is. While the Christian world has for the most part managed for the most part coexist peacefully for the last few decades (Obviously there are exception, but you get the point) the Islamic world is still heavily divided and fighting over religion, ethnicity, influence etc. Like its the medieval ages. Even in richer places like Qatar stuff like slavery and human trafficking happens. The Islamic world is stuck in the past and untill it sheds it's religious zealotism similar to what Turkey has done (Despite Erdoğan's best efforts Europe to reverse it) Europe and the rest of Asia will likley always be one step above them.

  • @reteguy7338

    @reteguy7338

    It's a city populations, not as a whole nation. And if you are talking about a capital city at a medieval time, than 2 millions are trully large. I've come a cross some section on some video on toughty2 channels that said about at around medieval time, earth populations as a whole was less than or around 5% compared to today population. So 2 million for a capital city was a really huge thing back than. But again it's a capital city, not as a nation as a whole. Meanings just because the a capital city is very overpopulated, doesn't guarantee that another part in the nation have a big population if the area doesn't support. Nowdays population of 2 million would probably considered to be just a quarter portion on some very large industrial city.
