Media coverage of Brianna Ghey's murderers was "completely irresponsible," argues Natasha Devon

Natasha Devon analyses the media coverage of Brianna Ghey's murder, particularly the depiction of her killers. Murderer Scarlett Jenkinson was described as "evil with a pretty face" by one newspaper. The ADHD and autism of fellow killer Eddie Ratcliffe was also leant upon by the press. Natasha says she will never understand the 'true crime-ification' of the case.
00:00 Natasha Devon ruminates on the release of the identities of Brianna's killers and the media coverage that followed.
06:53 Legal researcher Jess O'Thomson, who was at the trial, gives her thoughts.
Serial killer-obsessed Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe may never be released, a judge warned, and will only be let out if a parole board permits it after they are deemed safe.
Jenkinson was given a minimum term of 22 years, while Ratcliffe got 20 years at Manchester Crown Court.
Jenkinson did not react as she was sentenced, and neither did Ratcliffe, who looked directly ahead.
The killers, both 15 at the time, had been found guilty of the "disturbing" plan to murder Brianna, 16, in a "frenzied and ferocious" knife attack.

Following on from Jess's question pertaining to how the press are painting these two individuals, perhaps they are doing so to absolve readers suspicion of the press' s involvement in what has occurred for no I don't think these individuals were born evil, what I think is that they were conditioned to become evil and conditioned by the media they consumed.

Her texting her mother about riding the bus alone, and her mother being so proud of her, it was so agonizing for me to hear. Dismissing your opposition as being low empathy or incompetent isn’t a counter to any conservative arguments or stances, it’s just a cop out. The rise in conservative numbers has to do with people becoming fed up with the left. A lot of conservatives are politically homeless moderates who view conservative parties as the lesser of the two evils.

@@steveblundell7766 You might feel differently if you were wrongly accused of theft than if you were wrongly believed to be the victim of theft. So I feel like it should be easy to understand that it is different to suggest: 1) members of a group are more likely to be killers; 2) members of a group are more likely to be killed. It isn't confusing to think one is wrong and the other is not (especially when this is backed up by facts).

@@user-nc4od4pm8q Just because of the fact that a killer has ADHD, that doesn't automatically mean that people with ADHD are more likely to be killers. This is what is known as a hasty generalisation fallacy. It might help if you do not think of people with ADHD as "members of a group" since this is probably what led you into making such a generalisation. And this is why it is important that individual journalists are allowed to make their own judgement about what facts to report, rather than stick to a set of arbitrary rules approved by people like Natasha that simply reinforce the sort of prejudices that you have demonstrated.
