    Dirk, I watched the Entire Vid.. Primarily because I was taking a knife of my own Aprt While watching.. Not A Medford, BUT I was looking for a Pivot tool and came across this. To your question, I personally think if your buying Knives at this level, you should be taught and encouraged to dissemble them and learn how they work! Sharpening? maybe not so much, but after lsome training heck yeah.. I am glad Greg relaxed the Warranty rule.. I mean if you just tear something up and damage it, yes the warranty should noty stand but I personally Love taking my knives apart and cleaning them and Learning how they work! I am far better now than I was 4 months ago and will continue to learn..

    Hey there! Really enjoyed this video as there aren't many Medford disassembly videos, as you must know! I've got a Marauder H on the way to me, and it's due to arrive tomorrow (19th March '24) and was hoping you could tell me which tools to use if I want to disassemble it. Thanks so much for your time, James

    @@DirkWerning As I found out - Greg Medford does this for tolerances and to achieve perfect centering. Some Medfords have 3 & 3, some 4 & 2, some 4 & 3, some 2 & 2... each Medford knife is hand tuned and that's when (during hand tuning) the decision is made on the number of washers... What’s a bit strange personally to me is the fact that it feels like a cheap way to fix an issue on a $750-$800 knife!!! Why not machine all parts perfectly the backspacer and all other parts and redesign knife a bit vs. Just drop in more washers to each side? I do not think it helps with action or performance, and I don’t think this is Greg’s secret on building good knives, I still enjoy his designs a lot.

    @@DirkWerning Knife mechanisms (phosphorous bronze washers vs teflons vs ball bearings vs assist opening or axis) was not my interest either as I am not a knife maker. However, once I got myself into collecting knives and got few factory defect pieces or knives that developed issues, I was in desperate need to find someone who would fix and repair these. That’s when I had to become my own mechanic and learn some details, talk and chat with knifemakers, exchange ideas and pick up on few interesting tips and advises that served me well and helped me to become more hands on with my knives and learned a lot. It’s a fun journey that once it starts it never ends.

    I wouldn't disassemble my Medford as is being done here. I understand that this is just an informational video and we are not being told that taking our knives apart is a good idea. Of course, you can do whatever you want with your knife, its your business. @@DirkWerning Sorry, didn't mean to be rude. It was just my reaction to what was being done. I watched a video on Medford University on knife assembly. The people who assemble these knives train for 6 months. You have a knife engineered to beyond aerospace tolerances and the last thing that should be done, is to take it apart yourself. Its an extremely finely engineered knife that should only be taken apart by someone trained to do so. Especially considering the price. I have a Micro T and would never consider taking it apart. All the fine engineering and profession assembly work would be thrown out the window and the knife would need to go back to Medford in order to be assembled as it was engineered.

    @@meFatuations no worries at all. Trust me I am all too familiar with the Medford University videos and the ‘marketing’ that Greg has spent a ton of money on. I think it’s a stretch yo believe they are beyond aerospace engineered. And you are most certainly allowed to take them apart as Greg has also stated numerous times. It’s just a knife that uses multiple washers as needed to make up the tolerances. If they were beyond aerospace engineered there would not be a need for multiple washers of varying thicknesses on each side of the blade. Just my 2 cents after owning around 75 on/off through my collecting phase of MkT. I think my max at any one time was around d 50. So I’ve got a little experience with the brand…

    @@DirkWerning If you believe what Greg Medford says about his CNC tolerances, he is exceeding what is done in the aerospace industry. I like Greg and his attitude towards life. So I believe what he is saying. When you say that the washers are used to make up tolerances, where do you get your information from? I see the washers as a design element to provide for a superior user experience in using the knives. Because he uses washers, that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the tolerance to which the parts are manufactured. If you have a reliable source as to why washers are used and how they relate to the overall tolerances, please share. But to just make the statements you made without anything to backup what you are saying doesn't do justice to Greg and his products.

  • @DirkWerning

    @DirkWerning

    Жыл бұрын

    @@meFatuations let me be more clear. If the tolerances were as precise as they claim….why would some knives use one washer per side and others use up to four washers per side (or done combination of that). I’ve seen one side with 2 and the other with 4. My personal experience does not screen precise tolerances. Yes Greg has gone videos explaining why this is but even his explanations do not convey precise tolerances. I’m not here to argue or speak I’ll of his products at all. Nor am I here yo change your mind. I’m just stating my personal observations.
