Medano Pass Primitive Trail (Medano Pass Jeep Trail Difficulty) GSDNP

Спорт

This isn't my usual video, but I wanted to make something out of all of the trail footage I had from that day. This is more of a guide for people who want to see what the trail is like so feel free to skip around and I’ll answer any questions you comment about the trail! This was coming in from Country Road 589 which is off of CO-69 and then ending up at the entrance to the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Check out the actual edited video from that day of filming: (link at the end of video)
My Jeep (at the time):
Barricade Front Bumper
Barricade 9500lb winch
31" Mud/Terrain Tires

Fun! My hubs and I have been travelling this pass every year since our college days in 1990. This would include when the fire burned through in 2010 that changed the landscape so much. I have never thought to video the pass - even though it is one of my absolute favorite places in Colorado!! I hope everyone gets out to appreciate this multiple stream crossing and historic pass - you missed out catching the perfect shot when the dunes first come into view.....so people can catch this lovely reward if they show up to drive it. but love this.

Wow what an amazing tradition! It has been my favorite place that I’ve taken the Jeep. I wish I would have filmed that shot but I was so mind blown that I didn’t think to! I’ll be going back though so I’ll get it next time. Thanks for watching!

I've been to, I think that's Castle Creek camp grounds, at 14:55. Medano Pass was closed though, so we didn't get to go any further.

Haha I’m sure she will be 😂 you probably won’t have any problems as long as you don’t go right after rain. My Jeep is lifted with bigger tires now but I went through the trail stock suspension

Would you say you needed low range in any of this? I was thinking of taking my Outback up there. It has AT tires, lift and full skid plates just no low range.

I rolled over everything just fine in 4h so you should be good. Once you get to the top just pick a good line and avoid the rocky area I parked on for the thumbnail cause an outback might scrape there 👍🏼 leave a comment once you finish and let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching let me know any other questions.

Hey! I was hoping to to get to the top of the pass from the east with a newer Subaru Forester and the first part of your video seemed like it was doable. I've felt like I've been on harder roads before, do you think that is doable? Seems like NPS might be overdramatizing it, especially considering the way up is only 3 minutes of the video.

So you wouldn’t be coming through the national park then? Cause that sand was pretty darn loose at the entrance there. For the trail up to the top of the pass, it’s really not that bad. There aren’t any water crossings until the other side of the pass and only one pretty steep incline. My only warning would be to make sure you have a spare on board because some of the rocks on the trail are pretty sharp! I think you’d most likely be fine but leave a comment here when you do it so other Subaru owners can have a heads up!

Did it with a 2003 dodge dakota stock from East to the top of the pass at the entrance. Easy, lots of passing areas too. Tire size was 245/70r16. It is for sure under 8 in of clearance

I would think dry condition you could be alright until you get in deep water or sand then it could get iffy… also gotta have some okay clearance

Did you have to pay the park entrance fee since you came the back way and exited the park instead of entering the park?

It always makes me laugh when people call this a Jeep trail or a 4x4 trail. We used to two wheel this shit in my dads old ford when I was a kid, long before I had a license and even longer before it was a national park. I need to make a trip back soon

  • @LifeOutdoors

    @LifeOutdoors

Its actually named that on some maps thats why I put it haha but yeah its not a very challenging trail. Such a unique way to enter a national park though!

  • @ihatekate08

Life Outdoors oh is it? that’s crazy haha. Ever since it became a national park I think they’ve started over dramatizing a lot of things in hopes that people that shouldn’t do something won’t. Like Blanca Peak trail, the jaws obstacles are insane, but other than that it really isn’t as bad as some of the websites say. And I think there’s cutarounds so you can avoid the obstacles of you want, I know there used to be

Yeah that makes sense, I feel like most trails have ways to avoid the really tough stuff but I definitely recommend people do this one!
