LESSON SUMMARY
In order to understand the pathophysiology of respiratory emergencies, as well as how different treatments will affect the respiratory system, we must first understand the physics and physiology of ventilation and respiration. The mechanics of breathing are what allow the body to inhale air containing oxygen, exchange this oxygen for carbon dioxide in the lung tissue and exhale the carbon dioxide which is a byproduct of energy consumption and metabolism. These mechanisms, if disrupted, can lead to life-threatening complications as the body requires this exchange to survive. Understanding the mechanics of breathing sets the foundation to understanding how the body works and sustains life.
HIGH YIELD REVIEW
‣ Boyle’s law: volume of gas is inversely proportional to pressure
‣ Gases flow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure
‣ When atmospheric pressure exceeds intrathoracic pressure, air flows into the lung
‣ When intrathoracic pressure exceeds atmospheric pressure, air flow out of the lungs
‣ Hering-Breuer reflex prevents overinflation of lungs during inahlation
‣ CO2 is the main chemical that stimulates respiration (NOT O2!!)
‣ Normal tidal volume = 500ml

I’m an EMT as well as a TA for the physiology course offered at the university I attend. We just covered this in the physio class and this was a really nice video for me to watch to make sure I’m teaching the right stuff and not getting to lost in the specifics! Thanks guys!
