Meat, Dairy, & Prostate Cancer - What You Need to Know | Mark Moyad, MD, MPH & Mark Scholz, MD PCRI

PCRI's Executive Director, Mark Scholz, and public health expert, Mark Moyad, MD, MPH, discuss whether there is a strong link between dairy products, meat, and prostate cancer. They discuss the problems with isolating variables for proper scientific studies on the subject of diet and offer a less reductive way for prostate cancer patients to think about diet.

I have 8+8 stage 4 metastatic in remission for the last 9 months I still drink a couple of glasses of milk a day am not a vegan try to stay away from candy and chocolate most of the time. Let’s face it this disease affects everyone differently and my taste buds are not like they used to be so some times it’s hard to find something that actually tastes good so why not enjoy something that perks up your appetite at least once in awhile. I’m 67 and going on 3 years of this so I intend to at least enjoy life when I can. Good luck to all that are on this long journey and hoping we can all be cured one day soon.

Dr. Dean Ornish has shown regression with Prostate cancer. Dairy has lots of estrogen which has shown to increase several cancers. It contains insulin-like growth factor which stimulates cancer growth. It also has high concentration of environmental toxins that bio-accumulate in the cow from the feed. Some possible reasons why it can increase cancer risk.

The best dairy to eat or drink is grass-fed. I don't drink milk but I do enjoy grass-fed cheese and aged cheese. It's a big difference from grain-fed. Grass-fed cheese has more nutrients and CLA as well as omega 3 in them. Plus vitamin K2 which is very heart-healthy.

Latest research (June 2022): Men with higher intakes of dairy foods, especially milk, face a significantly higher risk of prostate cancer compared to men with lower intakes, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Loma Linda University Health. The study found no such associations between increased prostate cancer risk and intake of non-dairy calcium, suggesting substances other than calcium play a role in the risk dairy foods poses for prostate cancer. “Our findings add important weight to other evidence associating dairy products, rather than non-dairy calcium, as a modifiable risk factor for prostate cancer,” said Gary Fraser, MBChB, PhD, the study's principal investigator and professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and School of Public Health.

So a study looking at grass fed cows and any prostate cancer risk would be highly important.

A concern I have about dairy is--Is it helping cancers to grow? Dairy's sole purpose is to promote growth in living things--a calf goes from 100lbs to 200lbs in 90 days of nursing and kid goats 4-12lbs to 30-50lbs in 60 days. And worse still turning milk into cheese increases these hormones, fats etc as it concentrates everything.

That is a real concern to me as well, especially regarding cancers that are effected by sex hormones- prostate and breast cancer. Between the high levels of mammalian estrogen, the casein protein and the Insulin-like Growth Factor-1, humans are practically inviting cancer to form and proliferate by consuming dairy. The medical establishment needs to grow some courage and make a clear and concise recommendation to omit dairy all together. It is not a health food, comes with other harmful health impacts, and the vast majority of the population is lactose intolerant. The other very important piece that is so often left out of the discussion is that in the US the dairy herd is largely infected with bovine leukemia, yes- blood cancer. Guess what shows up on blood tests of a large percentage of women with breast cancer? Antibodies to bovine leukemia. We are feeding milk from diseases animals to the entire population and wondering why we are sick.

@@speedycarft I did 'ask any urologist'. She agreed, after I sent her links to several reputable studies (turns out she had already read them), that dairy and older men ARE an issue. Not only does the REGULAR consumption of dairy increase the risk of prostate cancer, it stimulates the growth of especially aggressive cancers. No, the occasional piece of cheese is not going to be a problem, which is good news. I love butter and cheese. However, I love living even more, and with one family member already dying of prostate cancer I don't feel that giving up dairy was a big sacrifice. What is the mechanism? We don't know yet. It appears the extraordinary levels of estrogen and progesterone in today's industrial milk are likely the issue.

So the recommendation is to minimise saturated fat where ever it comes from be it meat cheese milk yoghurt , coconut oil palm and and replace with unsaturated fats like olive oil . And yet, pomegranate juice has also shown to increase testosterone levels in a study of men by an average of 24% after two months. I thought testosterone was meant to increase prostate cancer progression! Same as vitamin d3. This vitamin has been scientifically shown to increase testosterone levels in men by 20% after 12 months of supplentation of 3,332 international units per day. Yet, other studies have shown that daily supplemtation of vitamin d3 at 4,000 iu reduced and in some cases reversed prostate cancer in a small study of 32 men. There goes the theory that increasing testosterone increases prostate cancer progression!!

Some of the epidemiological data has stratified for "other risk factors". Your answer is not complete. Other lifestyle factors including weight changes, smoking, exercise were also evaluated. High fat dairy, specifically cows milk 2-3 classes a day over a persons lifetime increases prostate cancer. Yogurt has not shown this. If you are going to do give medical advice, be specific. Please provide references and spend 10-20 hours minimum in the literature to give a complete answer. Complex disease, yes everyone is aware of of that. But, you also need to review the literature on "well done" meat for polyaromatic hydrocarbons. We are talking about life time exposure risk, and epidemiology is all we have in the nutrition research. This is low level science that you are presenting without any specific details. This is below the level of presentation we would expect from a first year undergrad student.

The reason red meat is bad for the prostate is because it has creatine in it. Creatine increases dht levels. Too high of dht levels is not good for the prostate especially in older men when their progesterone levels are declining. One of the things progesterone does is inhibits 5-alpha reductase. All men over 45 should be applying 8-10 mgs of progesterone cream to their scrotum daily. Especially if you’re at high risk for prostate cancer.

A year later, he's still alive, but I doubt he'll make it 5 years. Me, I took the other option. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple years ago, but it is early, and no treatment is required at this stage. I get my PSA checked quarterly, and we'll undertake treatment eventually. • @ThePCRI

The dairy industry is not paying either of the doctors. Dr. Scholz has said before in videos that he thinks cutting dairy is a good idea for prostate cancer patients based on literature like "The China Study," and here, Dr. Moyad is just saying that a small amount of dairy is not likely to make a big difference. A lot of the studies that were performed looking at dairy in people were looking at people who consumed a lot of dairy regularly, and in those kinds of studies, it is also impossible to control for other habits that people may have. So Dr. Moyad is saying that having a bit of milk in your tea or an ice cream every once in a while is probably not going to make a big difference and the important thing is that you are staying healthy overall. The dairy industry is unlikely to make big profits from such a suggestion.
