Measuring Mass Moment of Inertia of a Wheel - Brain Waves

The mass moment of inertia of wheels affect performance of a car. The tire and rim combined have a complicated geometry, so it's hard to calculate the mass moment of inertia analytically. However, it's not hard to measure by simply rolling the wheel down a ramp. I show the calculations and do an experiment with a go cart wheel.

Fantastic explanation and experiment. I'm trying to understand the dynamics of riding electric unicycles and one of the biggest unknowns in the gyroscopic calculations is the moment of inertia of the rim and tire. This looks like the best way to measure it. Thank you so much for the video!

Nice. I just was filling report of laboratory work in our university and found out it's all based on this video :D like we did everything step by step as You.

Nice video. I think "ax = radius times alpha" should be "ax = radius times second derivative of alpha)"'

It might. Rims definitely need to be balanced.
